HAPPY ST. PATRICK'S DAY!!!
Enjoy the Voice of the Irish in his own modest words... I saw a man coming, as it were from Ireland. His name was Victoricus, and he carried many letters, and he gave me one of them. I read the heading: "The Voice of the Irish". As I began the letter, I imagined in that moment that I heard the voice of those very people who were near the wood of Foclut, which is beside the western sea—and they cried out, as with one voice: "We appeal to you, holy servant boy, to come and walk among us.

Pick a Reliever
Bobby is the easy answer here... My question would be out of the back of the bullpen, who will have the best year, out of guys like Massett, Wasserman, Ohka, Sisco, and company?

Gavin Floyd
It finally hit me why I feel like we have done this before... Gavin Floyd=Jon Garland Yup. Their histories are so similar, it is scary. Both were very high draft picks who supposedly had mid to high 90's stuff, with a HUGE curveball. They both seemed to lose a decent amount of their stuff on their trip through the minors and beginning in the majors. They both were highly disappointed on their initial trips to the bigs, to the point of both players being traded early in their careers (remember the Garland/Erstad deal that Disney nixed?). They both suffered huge confidence problems after both their stuff and preformances had big disappointments. Finally both became huge targets for their fan bases. We might as well have the Floyd "Fan" Club start calling him "Judy" and get it over with. The one thing that gives me faith about Floyd is how well this regime did with Garland, who was a bust under the Manuel group. They really broke him down and rebuilt him into a very good pitcher. Garland was a guy who you didn't build a rotation around, but you also knew you were going to get solid stats and preformances from, and you could spend your time worrying about other problems.

So Brian Anderson's hitting...
Brian's last two ABs told me a lot. Both were "pressure" situations where he would have pressed in the past. He was totally relaxed and waiting for his pitch. Even in the last AB where he made an out, the patience was nice. The hits will come with that approach.

QUOTE(RibbieRubarb @ Mar 14, 2008 -> 12:07 PM) Replace Michael with Aaron and you got the complete list. Remember the term "Oceanic 6" is a media creation not a literal description of the people who were on the place and survived. The media will count Aaron and not let that get in the way of a cool tag-line. Also, I believe Jin is alive and still on the island. I bet he had to make the sacrifice to stay so she could live. The tombstone is a fake to support the "Oceanic 6" series of lies. Who else here thinks the final episodes in 2010 will be Jack and company storming the island to rescue everyone left behind? I believe they end up back on the island, but for selfish reasons. They want to go "home".

Sox vs. Cubs bet I made with coworker
QUOTE(CWSGuy406 @ Mar 13, 2008 -> 06:10 PM) I'm fairly certain that Fukudome didn't hit more than 30 homers in a season in Japan. //goes and checks baseballcube Okay, he's done it twice -- 34 looks to be his high. He's what, 31, and coming to a much more difficult league. If I were you I'd put as much money as your co-worker is willing to go with this one -- I'd say the only way Swisher doesn't hit more homers than Fukudome is if Swisher gets hurt (which can be said about any sports-related bet). Bet the house, the mortgage, the kids -- bet it all, man. I don't think ANY Japanese players have come close to their totals during their first year in the US. I would bet Swisher HARD.

North v South
QUOTE(Jenksismyb**** @ Mar 13, 2008 -> 02:45 PM) I saw a bunch of Muslim hijackers kill 3k plus people in one day. I know of the groups of Muslims that exist for the sole purpose of killing people from the Western world. Etc, etc. thus, every Muslim in the world is a terrorist who wants to bring an end to America. If you've got specific instances of a group of people doing something and you say the group of people is racist, fine (i.e. I saw a KKK rally, KKK members are therefore racist). But you shouldn't expand that to say the whole town is racist or the whole state is racist or the whole northern region of the country is racist. That just seems silly to me. To me instances make up a trend. Trends are what generally define areas. If you want to take that to mean ALL, you are severely missing the whole point of the discussion. There isn't one single person in this thread who has said that every single member of any grouping is racist. You are making extremes out of something that isn't even there.

Who is the least talked about Sox player?
I voted for JD now. He has his two year contract, is locked into a postion, and really has a pretty narrow set of expectations that most people seem to think he will live up to. All of the pitchers have people worrying about them. Even Konerko has been the subject of trade rumors/ideas.

North v South
QUOTE(Jenksismyb**** @ Mar 13, 2008 -> 02:24 PM) Should we really be basing an opinion on whose worse based on one incident? I mean, I know that's human nature, but there are assholes everywhere, it doesn't mean the town/village/region/state is the same. I agree with the statement that racism exists everywhere, though I would follow that up by saying racism as a societal issue, IMO, is about as low as we can expect it to get. There will always be some form of it practiced by ignorant asses, there's just no way to get rid of it entirely. But from my view, in my mid-twenties, going through school and work in completely diverse environments, I just don't see it. Obviously where I have lived/worked is probably not where it's going to happen, but 50 years ago I would have seen it daily, at work, at school, on the train, on the street, etc. I'll prolly get flamed for saying that, but so be it. Would you like more instances I have seen in my life? I can talk about the race riots I saw in my hometown my senior year of High School. I can talk about the town I saw where multiple people I knew could name every non-white family in it. I can talk about the town I saw where when I was in college there, someone was having the first mixed baby in its known history. I can talk about the Klan capitol of Indiana.

Swish may lead off
QUOTE(YASNY @ Mar 13, 2008 -> 10:20 AM) Here's a few reasons why I would prefer Swish leading off. First and foremost, he has a high OBP. Second, he takes pitches. I believe he was 7th in the AL in average pitches per PA. Also Cabrera is just and damn good number 2 hitter. If Swish gets on base more often to lead off the game, as his OBP indicates he will probably do, then you have a very good handler of the bat up there to move him into scoring position. You also have more instances of having a runner on base with no outs with Swish leading off. If Cabrera leads off and doesn't get on base, wish is more likely to happen, then Swish gets on ... you probably have a man on first, one out for Thome as opposed to a man in scoring position, one out. Of course, I'm aware the OC will get on base as well, but I'm talking about how Swish's superior OBP should come into play more often and more in the Sox favor with him leading off. This could be like the old Frank Thomas days where pitchers throw tons of pitches in the first inning and then don't get out of the sixth inning, and we beat up on bullpens. Its pretty easy to envision Swisher, Cabrera, and Thome seeing 25 pitches in an inning. They might not produce anything, but those kind of innings could be the difference between a starter going into the eighth, or getting lifted in the sixth.

Hall of Fame debate
I am curious what people think here... How should certian people be viewed in regards to going into the Hall of Fame from this era? Should we enshrine people strictly based on their numbers? Should we enshrine people who probably would have been HOFs before they started cheating? Should we enshrine people who are proven to cheat, but didn't admit it? Should we enshrine people who admit to cheating? Should we only enshirine people who we are as certian as possible did not cheat? Thoughts? I have specific people in mind, but I am curious to hear how others think, without shaping the debate myself.

American Idol - Season 7
QUOTE(kapkomet @ Mar 13, 2008 -> 09:30 AM) I agree. I had a hard time with it, because the "purist" in me kept fighting the "blah" every time someone would butcher the song. I must admit, though, that I really liked "Let It Be". She did great with that... but she kept it right with what the song was supposed to be about. There were a couple that I didn't hate. I'll admit I am a huge Beatles snob, so I am hard to satisfy. I think the two Beatles remakes I liked the best were Joe Cockers remake of "A Little Help from my friends" from Wonder Years, and BoyzIIMen when they redid "Yesterday".
