New Bin Laden tape
QUOTE(103 mph screwball @ Mar 22, 2008 -> 09:13 AM) If Sen. Obama becomes President, Osma Bin Laudin will be dead within a month. Bush doesn't want to catch him. Then he won't have the boogie man to scare people into voting for McCain. President Obama will not only kill terrorists, he will slow down their recruitment. I thought he was going to negotiate with them, not kill them?

Energy thread
QUOTE(NorthSideSox72 @ Mar 19, 2008 -> 10:07 AM) These economists seem to think that gas prices, nationally, will spike to around $3.50 to $3.75 per gallon by May, with some areas paying over $4. But, they say it will likely settle back to $3.25-ish, due to the decreased demand that goes with those price levels. I hate to even go here, being not an expert but... I think I see a problem in that assumption. People's demand for gas is only variable on elective use - vacations and road trips, basically. They will still go to work, still go to the store, etc. So the variable part is only a very small fraction of the demand. The rest is almost static*. * = the caveat here is that as prices go really high, people will start to do things like buy more hybrids and electric cars, get jobs closer to home, etc. But those sorts of things don't happen over a period of weeks. They take years to change enough for major effect to be felt. Ah yes the elasticity of gasoline. These last few years have been a really interesting live case study in something we studied pretty hard in college. Amazingly enough, energy has almost seemed to have had a reverse elasticity, as demand has kept going up as prices have tripled. It really is incredible, and completely contra-logical. Intellectually I really wonder what point it would take to get people to treat gasoline as they would any other thing that saw a dramatic increase in prices over a short period of time $5 a gallon? $10 a gallon?

Harold Baines Will Be The New Outfield Statue
That 1983 team is the one that cemented me forever as a White Sox fan. I remember being a little leaguer and immitating Harolds leg load and stride at the plate. He was one of my favorites for sure.

Dye hitting .179
It takes powerhitters longer to get going. With a bigger swing, there is more to get into sync. I wouldn't stress about it.

Brian Anderson
QUOTE(BearSox @ Mar 23, 2008 -> 06:06 PM) after seeing Brian Anderson the past couple of days, he can become a decent player. He fixed his stance and swing, and it has worked wonders for him. The funny thing is, why didn't anyone tell within the organization tell him this 2 years ago? I'm no BA fan boy, but he is our best option in CF, and he can be decent if he continues to learn. If we're lucky, I think he can turn into a lesser version of Mike Cameron within a year or two. But that is dependent on if he has really matured and is willing to spend a good majority of his time just focusing on baseball. Wow. I think you have missed the last 3 seasons worth of controversy surrounding Brian Anderson. The problem has always been his attitude. That has what has caused all of the controversy is that he wouldn't listen to instruction. That is why everyone else is so excited that his attitude seems to have changed, because his potential is still there for him to be a $13 million per year CF, for about $500,000 a season.

Oh crap...Miggy Cabrera agrees to 8 more years with Tigs
QUOTE(kyyle23 @ Mar 23, 2008 -> 10:39 AM) I wonder if Juan Gonzalez has played one years worth of games since he declined that offer from the tigers. What year was that? EDIT: Juan Gone turned down the deal in the winter of 1999, since that moment he has played in 441 of a possible 810 games, with his last at bat coming in an embarrassing 2005 where he had one AB and hurt himself. Its too bad he didn't sign it. That contract would have JUST come off of the books and would have crippled that franchise. They would have never recovered to this point with it on their payroll.

Oh crap...Miggy Cabrera agrees to 8 more years with Tigs
QUOTE(sircaffey @ Mar 22, 2008 -> 11:28 PM) Per Rotoworld: A source told ESPN Deportes that the Tigers and Miguel Cabrera have agreed to an eight-year, $153.3 million contract extension through 2016. It's possible, but it'd also hardly be the first time ESPN Deportes botched a reported contract. If this is true, Cabrera sold himself way too cheaply. To give up his last year of arbitration and seven years of free agency for just $19 million per year would be a terrible move on his part, or at least the MLBPA would have to feel that way. I love that last part there. Humorous stuff... Ask the last Tiger who turned down a 7 year 140 million dollar contract if he thought that was a smart move...

Joakim Noah/The NBA Draft
QUOTE(BobDylan @ Mar 22, 2008 -> 08:36 AM) I don't think there is a problem in his drafting philosophy (with the exception of not taking Aldridge.) I think his problem lies within not having the balls to make a trade. Where would the Bulls have been this year with Kevin Garnett? Or Kobe Bryant? Or Pau Gasol? Those are three guys who can put up some big numbers. Ben Gordon, Kirk Hinrich and Loul Deng, though I love them, are not in the league those three players are. Gasol was teh one guy of the three you listed who Paxson had the ultimate control over getting. The T-Wolves turned down the Bulls offer, which by most accounts was better than what they got eventually from Boston. Kobe, but most accounts, wasn't willing to come to Chicago if the Bulls put together a package big enough to get Bryant in the first place.

Would JR ever say this???
QUOTE(jasonxctf @ Mar 20, 2008 -> 03:47 PM) southside... is your bracket busted already? What's with the hostility. Where did I say that JR is a poor (partial-owner). Where did I say that JR should open his books. I ask hypothetical questions that have nothing to do with me particular, just a general line of thought. in addition, that was not a Mariotti article at all. Talk about jumping off the deep end, jesus. Oh please. Give it a rest. I stand by my point, actions speak louder than words, even though even JRs words have said exactly what Kohl said for YEARS.

Miscellaneous "MLB" Trade Notes
QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Mar 21, 2008 -> 08:55 PM) Someone the other day was asking why the Sox settled on Danks and Floyd when they could have gone after someone like Joe Blanton in the A's firesale. I think this is why. LMAO, so yeah, Sweeney, DLS, and Gio would have really gotten it done there!

DEM Primaries/Candidates thread
QUOTE(NorthSideSox72 @ Mar 21, 2008 -> 12:20 PM) Richardson endorses Obama? I have to admit, I didn't think that was likely. But I do think it says something, for a former Clinton administration guy to do that. Richardson could be a lot of help in PR, and maybe a small help in other states, if he goes and campaigns for Obama. Edwards is the last big piece now. And frankly, Edwards is a LOT more help in PA and NC than Richardson is. If Edwards endorses Hillary and campaigns for her, I think PA becomes a huge win for her and she might even take NC. If he endorses Obama, that means Obama has a shot to win PA, and will roll through NC. Plus he still has some delegates to spread out. If Richardson was going to endorse Clinton, he would have never run for President in the first place. Once again keep in mind that is two people from the Clinton adminstration that will not endorse Hillary Clinton for President. If your former employees won't promote you, that says a lot.

QUOTE(DBAH0 @ Mar 21, 2008 -> 03:14 AM) Gordon's likely to sign with Memphis I think. Philly has the cap room, but they've got a nice core, and I don't know if they need to add Ben to the mix. Although it's arguble if Willie Green is a starting 2 guard in the league. But Gordon's certainly on his way out. Great scorer, but he'll always be a combo guard at best who needs a very good defensive PG alongside him. Deron Williams for instance. Gordon is restricted this year, so you can bet Pax won't let him walk away. At best they figure out a sign and trade with someone.

For GOP only
QUOTE(NorthSideSox72 @ Mar 20, 2008 -> 02:40 PM) One would expect this, given the in-fighting in the Dem party. If this was October, the Dems should worry. But its not. How this situation resolves itself is important - the Dem fight I mean. But ultimately, come July, it will be in the rear-view, and it will be a new race. I think it is the opposite. The newscycle is 24/7 on Obama and Clinton. The only time McCain even makes the news is when he screws something up. It is amazing 50% of people even realize McCain is still in the race.

Would JR ever say this???
QUOTE(JohnCangelosi @ Mar 20, 2008 -> 12:58 PM) No offense to any of you guys in this forum as I think you are great and your knowledge of baseball is really fun to read. But who here runs a corporation with INVESTORS involved??? I happen to be an investor in many businesses and also run a few corporations myself. One thing you guys are missing is that when you have INVESTORS in your business, you need to report to them consistently on what you are doing in order to make a profit. JR doesn't outright own this team, even though he has a majority stake. JR is probably the most misunderstood owner in sports and I have no problem with him running a business to make money, especially when he has to report to investors and let them know he is actually managing their investment with care! You guys make it seem like its evil that a company makes profits. Kinda like the BS Hillary or Obama are spouting out these days. JR is not interested in making tons of money with the White Sox and he wants to win. He has brought 7 championships to Chicago and people still cannot criticize him quick enough. Just my .02 JR doesn't actually even own the biggest stake in this team...
