FEMA Fakes Press Conference.
QUOTE(Alpha Dog @ Nov 11, 2007 -> 01:06 PM) I wonder if the staffers for Hillary that planted her softball questions will get any percentage of the scrutiny as the FEMA folks? http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,310417,00.html So not only was the question a plant, but they have a systematic approach to doing it... Also they mention that she wasn't the only plant, but never mention any other people/info. Can we get some details? http://www.drudgereport.com/flash.htm

When was the last time the Sox were outwardly looking to spend huge dollars on a FA? Its been a while. It will be more interesting what the under the radar moves are...

Torii Hunter
I get the feeling you don't want to be the first CF to sign this winter, you want to wait for teams to get a little more desparate.

Andruw Jones
QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Nov 12, 2007 -> 02:22 PM) There are what, 30 teams out there? YOu just named 5 potential CF's counting Jones. I'm still wondering if this isn't enough to saturate the market. Esp. if you talk about teams like the Twins who are losing CF's but aren't in the market for any of these higher priced guys There are teams like the Sox who don't have a CF who are looking for one, and there are all of those teams who used to have those players, but are losing them. I have no doubt Jones will get a huge, multi year deal from someone. If anyone on that list is going to get a one year deal, it is Mike Cameron.

QUOTE(YASNY @ Nov 10, 2007 -> 10:09 AM) Jones for one year damn well could be a better option than Hunter for 5 or 6. Something to think about. Except we won't get Jones for one year... There is going to be a team that loses out on Rowand/Hunter/Cameron/Fukodome that wants and upgrade and Borass will talk them into Jones, just like the shyster used car salesman that he is.

Pet peeves....
QUOTE(southsideirish71 @ Nov 9, 2007 -> 04:12 PM) The guy in the public bathroom who makes so much noise you think that they are not in there for a bowel movement, but that they are about to give birth to a 9 pound baby. Then of course the same guy, who comes out of the stall all sweaty after fightin through the birth of his brown baby boy, smiles like he accomplished something, then proceeds to leave the bathroom forgetting to wash his hands. The guy in the public bathroom, who thinks its his turn on american idol. Nothing creepier than hearing some song acapella while trapped on the toliet. people who while in the stall next to you in the public bathroom, are talking on their phone. Speakerphone is worse of course. The nice thing about this, is that it is two way street. I get people on the train who pull this crap. The easy way to fix this problem is to become more unbearable than the conversation he is having. Say things like "Come back to bed big boy!" and "Man that rash has really cleared up, but be sure to apply your cream three times a day, and come back and see me in a week." They'll get the hint.

For GOP only
QUOTE(NorthSideSox72 @ Nov 10, 2007 -> 04:36 PM) Wasn't sure where to put this, but I know how much the conservatives love to make fun of Chavez's rants, so... Hugo Chavez called former Spanish Prime Minister Aznar (the one previous to the current one, who supported Bush in the war on terror) a fascist, and a snake. His comments were so insulting that even the current far-left Spanish PM, Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero, scolded Chavez. And the best part? The King of Spain told Chavez to sit down and "shut up". The sad thing is that this is just cover for Chavez installing himself as Dictator, which no one is now talking about... http://online.wsj.com/article/SB1194830478...=googlenews_wsj

Dan in Real Life was a great movie. It was perfectly written for Steve Carrell. It had some just hilarious parts, with the dry humor and subtle bits that Carrell is best at. For anyone who likes his style of comedy this is super highly recommended.

House passes AMT fix bill
QUOTE(NorthSideSox72 @ Nov 10, 2007 -> 11:42 AM) Actually, it was 216-193. Follow the link. They misquoted the results yesterday on Bloomberg...

House passes AMT fix bill
The interesting thing about the AMT vote was that it was 216-93. The thing that should jump out at you is that only 299 reps actually voted. That means 136 reps didn't feel it important enough to show up and vote, or about one third of the whole house. Its embarassing.

2007-08 NBA Thread
QUOTE(Palehosefan @ Nov 7, 2007 -> 07:32 PM) My God I hate watching the Hawks play. I force myself to when I watch Marvin play, but it's disgusting. It's like watching an un-organized AAU team, which is really saying something. Is there a worse teammate than Josh Smith in the NBA? He's 5/12 tonight which is actually a good shooting day for him, and he still thinks he's Jordan. I would like to see an IQ test taken by him and a sack of bricks, would be a good contest. If they can trade away Smith, and AC Law proves to be an NBA PG they might really have something. Al Horford was a good pick, partially making up for Shelden Williams. It makes you appreciate the jobs that Scott Skiles and John Paxson do. The Hawks are a more talented team from player to player if you ask me. The difference is that the Bulls put stock into a players character, how they work with others, and the stuff between the ears. It really shows as the Bulls probably get more out of their level of talent than any team in the NBA right now.

Pet peeves....
QUOTE(YASNY @ Nov 9, 2007 -> 09:36 AM) My newest pet peeve is being told what pet peeves I cannot talk about. Seriously. The whole point was to have a fun thread, instead of everyone getting snippy about other people's pet peeves.

The environment thread
QUOTE(southsideirish71 @ Nov 9, 2007 -> 10:59 AM) I wouldnt worry about the Ash hitting Chicago. I would however worry about the sun being blocked out from the debris kicked up in the atmosphere. There are 2 other supervolcanos in the US, including Long Valley which has had some earthquakes as well, with another large lava field. I wouldnt worry about this though, 5 people from soxtalk are more likely to hit the megamillions jackpot over this happening in our lifetime. So burying the food producing plains states is any better? Also, what were the odds of a 9.3 earthquake in the Indian Ocean causing a tsunami that would kill 250,000 people? Just because something isn't likely, doesn't mean we shouldn't be aware of it.

Stocks and investing thread
QUOTE(BigSqwert @ Nov 9, 2007 -> 09:55 AM) The Dow taking another hit this morning because of Wachovia stating it will take quarterly loan losses due to its debt portfolio. So we are starting to look at magic numbers again... 13000 is the big number today. If they can get to that, and stay above it, that bodes well for the stocks. If they close through that today, the next stop is 12600.

The environment thread
QUOTE(NorthSideSox72 @ Nov 8, 2007 -> 03:33 PM) No idea where to put this, so here we go. The Yellowstone Caldera has been inflating at the fastest rate recorded since they began measuring in 1923 - about 3 inches a year - for the past 3 years. Some geologist from UU says no imminent threat is apparent. But the timing cycle, if it can be relied upon, does seem to indicate that we are coming up on a slot. This could be nothing of course. Hard to tell, it seems. There is your mildly alarming thought for the day. The biggest volcano in the US with 3 historical eruptions that would pretty much bury Chicago in feet of ash... nope that isn't disheartening at all.
