  1. QUOTE(YASNY @ Nov 8, 2007 -> 09:29 AM) Do you really think Robertson has that much clout now? No I do not think Robertson has the clout, I think he was a tool of convience for Rudy. Guilliani's one big weakness is that he is viewed as too socially liberal for a big influencial chunk of the Republician party. He needs to somehow convince that segment that he really won't roll back everything that they have been working for. He needs the endorsements of those exact kind of people. I could see him sitting down and saying that he would put a Brownback or Hunter, or the like, on the ballot as a VP to show that he is "authentically" conservative, in exchange for gettting a public endoresement before primary season to calm that talk down. There was even talk of a schism by the religious right to get "their" candidate on the Presidential ballot. Rudy knows he has no chance if that happens.
  2. Will they be able to suspend players for 50 games who committed offenses from before that was the drug suspension policy? I don't think so. The union would have one hell of a case on their hands.
  3. QUOTE(YASNY @ Nov 8, 2007 -> 09:13 AM) Robertson's being a weasal and selling out his own convictions. Instead of endorsing who he thinks the best Republican candidate is, he's endorsing who he thinks has the best shot at keeping the Dems out of the White House. Knowing those two, I wouldn't be surprised if there was a backroom deal involved.... like maybe picking an ultraconservative as a VP running mate.
  4. QUOTE(kapkomet @ Nov 8, 2007 -> 08:03 AM) In our business, which reports in Euros and does most of its business in the US, we are getting KILLED on currency. It sucks. Serious question, have they thought about currency options in reporting months as a hedge?
  5. QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Nov 5, 2007 -> 09:14 AM) I know, its macroeconomic theory, and it runs counter to what most people have been brainwashed to believe. Its not difficult at all to reduce growth and still strengthen the dollar... Find a way to cut production costs of American goods across the board. Cut things like wages, benefits, material costs... Another similiar story that goes right into my theory. The micro-economic effects of the macro-economic adjustments playing through the rest of the worlds economies is interesting, well at least to me. Notice the talk throughout about profit pressures, wages pressures, and currency differences squeezing profits. Alan Greenspan was already talking about China as a whole facing these pressures in the middle term future. It looks like that day is coming quickly. http://www.chicagotribune.com/services/new...0,3188492.story

  7. He'd have to pass one hell of a physical... I wouldn't mind it if they really checked him out making sure that that arm and his weight were under control. Besides I kinda miss the guy who was his stalker back when Colon pitched here.
  8. The national polls with 52 weeks to election day have Rudy Guilliani at 28%, Thompson in second at 19%, McCain in 3rd at 16%, and Romney in 4th at 11% The Dem side has Hillary still with a sizable lead, but it has gotten MUCH smaller. She went from a 51% to 21% advantage over Obama to a 44% to 25% advantage from the last CNN poll in October. http://www.cnn.com/2007/POLITICS/11/05/poll.presidential.08/
  9. QUOTE(Brian @ Nov 6, 2007 -> 07:33 PM) Some people would say the hockey ruined the thread. Sez the guy with a wrestling avatar...

  12. QUOTE(witesoxfan @ Nov 6, 2007 -> 04:19 PM) It looks like Kenny Williams really does not care what Jerry Reinsdorf thinks. I did finally find an article about the Chicago part of the vote, KW voted yes, and Jim Hendry voted no, based on the "slippery slope" arguement. It is really unusual to see 80% of MLB go against Bud. I don't know that I remember that happening before.
  13. QUOTE(The Critic @ Nov 7, 2007 -> 11:11 AM) I appreciate the passion but don't understand the freakout. They really had no choice if they didn't trade for another SS. There was no viable in-house alternative. That is pretty much where I am at. At worst, you have the same stuff you had before, but at least the guy can play some D, which if Fields is our 3B, we will really value. Obviously there was nothing out there, and you can't have your back up plan being Pablo Ozuna and Andy Gonzalez. If you hate Juan Uribe, you ain't seen nothing yet.
  14. QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Nov 7, 2007 -> 11:13 AM) Because it's easier and more manly, and because the people who signed the Geneva conventions were weak p*&&ies.. And because, a lot of times, getting at the truth isn't what we want; we want to hear the answer we want to hear. In most cases, I'd say the evidence strongly suggests that the non-violent methods, as outlined in the army field manuals, handbooks, and rules, work far better for extracting actual information. If you're asking for an entire procedure that works better, there are all the details you want. You can start training at your leisure. Good lord. Nevermind. I was trying to ask a serious question here, but between yours and BS's answers, I guess I shouldn't waste my time. For all the talk of wanting to get past hyperbole and rhetoric, that is exactly what I got here.
  15. QUOTE(Kalapse @ Nov 7, 2007 -> 10:32 AM) Shouldn't a decline encompass more than 1 season? From 2004 to 2007 HRs 34-26-24-18 SLG .534-.515-.498-.442 OPS+ 131-128-126-109 I'd call that a trend.

  17. McCain is the only candidate out there that really could gain from the war going better in Iraq. If they really have slowed down the sectarian violence on a reasonable level, and they can actually get out to rebuild the country, he could get a nice bounce. I don't think there is long enough in the cycle for that to happen though.
  18. QUOTE(NorthSideSox72 @ Nov 7, 2007 -> 10:10 AM) I think the point to be made is that torture might be no more effective than, say, nothing. Or incentivizing. Cutting deals. Whatever. Point is, its not like torture is the magical key to the truth. And since it happens to be abhorrent and something that this country shouldn't be part of except in the most extreme of circumstances... maybe we should be trying other things. My point is, what IS more effective? I never have stated the only way to get anything done is to torture someone. I want to know what the most effective way to get information out of people is and why aren't we using it? We have studies that say torture doesn't work, so what are the studies saying is working? Why would would the US be dumb enough to torture people if something else worked better, and didn't violate the Geneva conventions? Once again back to my example, what would be the most effective way to get information out of someone to prevent a terror attack?

QUOTE(Controlled Chaos @ Nov 7, 2007 -> 08:47 AM) People who don't turn their shoulder when you're passing each other close. I figure I would knock around about 10 people just on my way to and from work. I always think that...like what would these people do if I just walked straight as well? Do I have a sign on my head that says...I will move so you can continue on your self righteous path unobstructed?? The one problem I have is probably 75% of the time it's women that do this and I don't want to bowl them over. I will say I retaliated once to a guy who was texting or reading something on his crackberry or something. He was walking straight at me, looking down...so I just kept walking straight as well. He never looked up so I moved a little so I wouldn't run him straight over and I only hit the side of him. The poor bastard almost went to the ground...his blackberry flew out of his hand and got kicked around a couple times. He was like whoops, I'm sorry I wasn't paying attention and I was like I know. I felt kinda bad and good at the same time. Sometimes when I have people walking right at me while they're having a convo with 3 other people and blocking the whole sidewalk I will just stop and let them run into me. I'm sorry, you can't walk 4 across downtown and have everyone just part like the red sea as you approach. The best is those people usually give me the dirty look. It's like look at the 9 feet you're taking up then look at the 1 foot you're giving me and you want me to make it 1/2 a foot?? Screw you lady!!! That kind of stuff is why I like carrying my nice heavy backpack. People who don't want to share the sidewalk get smacked with that as a move my shoulders to avoid contact, leaving the backpack in their path instead.
  20. QUOTE(BigSqwert @ Nov 7, 2007 -> 08:45 AM) John McCain was tortured in Vietnam. And since torture works (according to pro-torture people) he must have given up secret intel on the US. That should disqualify him as a presidential candidate. We cannot trust him. No real answer? Serious question here. The US captures someone who they know has information regarding an imment terror attack on US soil. They have no idea who, what, or where. What is the most effective way to get the information from him? I always here about what doesn't work, but what actually does work? What is the US government missing?
  21. Good for Kenny for staying away from Tejada. He is in such a decline, and it is probably due to the drug testing from the sounds of it.
  22. Count the Marlins out of the Arod derby, putting that ridiculous rumor to rest. http://www.palmbeachpost.com/marlins/conte...106marlins.html
  23. If you can get Cabrera for that package, you do it in a heartbeat. I do think the Yankees would top anything we put out there though.
  24. So out of curiousity, what exactly do the study's say is the most effective way to get information out of someone who is trained not to give it up?
  25. Speaking of weird endorsements... Pat Robertson and Rudy Gulliani? http://blog.washingtonpost.com/thefix/2007...e_giuliani.html
