Ozzie Guillen Appreciation Thread
QUOTE (Quinarvy @ Sep 26, 2011 -> 10:09 PM) But despite all that, here's to you Ozzie, it was a hell of a few years and then it was hell for a few years. But most importantly, the good memories, they'll always stay. I think you have summed up my sentiments nicely right there. Good Luck in Miami, Ozzie!

Apps I'd like to see
I have been dying for a somewhat similar app that allows you to compare prices of booze at package stores. A bottle of rum that one store stocks for $40 can cost $29 somewhere lest than 30 minutes away. And because a bottle on sale on one shelf means a jacked up price on something else a shelf over you can't get the best prices on everything at a single store. The problem is the army of data loggers and the legwork required to keep up on prices at all of the stores you would want to include. Without having enough of an incentive to have bottle shops opt into a database set and be willing to keep their stock and price database up to date it wouldn't be possible. But, man, it would sure save me some running around.

The Finer Things In Life
QUOTE (Leonard Zelig @ Sep 22, 2011 -> 04:29 PM) Any Octoberfest lovers out there? So far this year I've had Bell's, Sam Adams, & Schlafly in bottles and Sam Adams & Schlafly on tap. I think Spaten will be my next choice when the Schlafly is gone. Anybody have any suggestions of others? So far this season of the authentic Munich Big 6 Oktoberfestbiers, I have only had Paulaner (draft). As for the other Big 6 Hacker-Pschorr and Spaten have shown up locally so I need to get around to those; Löwenbräu typically only shows up in bottles, Hofbräuhaus hasn't come locally in a few years, and I don't think I have ever seen Augustinerbräu in teh states — a shame, because that is the favorite of the Münchners who know their bier. I also have had this year's Sam Adams Oktoberfest-style beer (bottle) and thought it was quite as good and malty as ever.

Cylander vs. G-Money
I don't think I have ever seen a team look so totally clueless as the Sox have looked playing Detroit these last two series.

QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Sep 13, 2011 -> 03:48 PM) I wonder if Putin was the inspiration for the Dos Equis guy. What a photo gallery. Two of my co-workers were on that Mir-2 research submersible trip in Lake Biakal with Putin in 2009 (see slide #33). Also, on looking at the Action Man photo set, I think I'm a little gay for Putin. Also, also, he would make a great classic Bond movie villain.

2011 Films Thread
QUOTE (qwerty @ Sep 11, 2011 -> 02:28 AM) I know he is not for everyone... but i just finished off watching every film woody allen has either wrote or directed. I even watched ''zelig'' again last night for a poster here... leonard zelig. I was going through his filmography several day ago and realized that there were only six films combined that i have not seen. So, naturally, i wiped out what i had not seen... and now i will probably go back and watch a few of his true classics. I am about a s big a Woody Allen fan as there is, but even I don't think I could watch them all in a short timespan without getting agitated.

QUOTE (Milkman delivers @ Sep 12, 2011 -> 10:49 PM) Is it ironic that I never, ever drink milk? Never drinking the stuff is one thing. Now, just stop pouring it in your belly button and letting it go bad. . .

The Finer Things In Life
My "day of saturation" was today and it came not a day too soon :-) First stop this evening with a work buddy was to a local beer place that just tapped a keg of Brooklyn Brewery's Concoction. Smokey and sweet and spicy all at the same time. Very nice balance once he initial smoke hit sits back a bit and lets the other flavors come out. The next stop was the spirits shop to pick up a bottle of Famous Grouse so I could go home to make a Penicillin Cocktail, the cocktail that inspired Brewmaster Garret Oliver at Brooklyn to brew the Concoction. I used ginger syrup that I have had in the fridge for a few months so the fresh ginger bite wasn't really there, but this cocktail has a lot going for it. I understand why it has become a popular one in the craft cocktail world.

QUOTE (Milkman delivers @ Sep 12, 2011 -> 08:45 PM) Seriously, why does my belly button get so f***ing smelly? I wash it everyday in the shower, but it just smells again by the end of the day. I don't even smell when I sweat. It's so random that I cannot understand it. S'gotta be the Milk, Man.

2011 Music Thread
After missing the tour the first time around a couple of years ago and being devastated over it, I finally got to see Zappa Plays Zappa on the Tour de Frank tour last night and it was awesome. I would have liked seeing the old FZ bandmates like Napoleon Murphy Brock, Ike Willis, Steve Vai, etc., in the last incarnation, but the new lineup with the young players was really incredible. The marimba player in particular was brilliant. As a bonus, ZpZ was on a twin bill with Return to Forever who I have wanted to see live for a long time. Chick Corea was great (He sat in on King Kong with the Dweezil band, and I got to meet him after the show), and there are no words to describe how amazing Stanley Clarke is. An additional treat is that Jean-Luc Ponty is part of the curent FtF lineup, and it has been more than 20 years since I had seen him play live. Best live music experience in a long time.

I pretty much have exactly that relationship with Mount Gay Eclipse. It us too venerable a rum nit to keep on hand, and for emit was one of the gateway rums that led me away from the utter unremarkableness of Bacardi and into rums with character. But these days the bottle gets dusty. I will grab the Cockspur 10 times out of 10 if I need a Barbados rum, and there are at least six or eight gold rums I will reach for ahead of Eclipse for home mixology duty. I do use Mount Gay as the rum of choice for Hot Buttered Rum for cold weather camping and holiday festivities. And I will also use Mount Gay as the first choice gold rum in a Trader Vic Molokai Mike - a fun bi-layered frozen drink my wife is quite partial to. It is also a drink that at least the L.A. Trader Vic's has totally forgotten how to make correctly. When my wife ordered one last year we expected to be blown away by an original TV Molokai Mike, but it sucked. I just follow the recipe as given in the Trader Vic's drink books and they come out splendid, so I am not sure how the bar can screw them up so badly.

All these other posters have no respect for their elders. Just remember who loves ya as you are putting that will and testament together. Better get a move on that while you still can, you know they say the mind is the first thing to go. Happy Birthday!!

Yeah, once I finally found the Hors D'Age and shelled out $45 for that it seemed like I'd be shooting a potentially awesome drink in the foot if I didn't shell out for the Extra as well. On top of that, the Missus had a taste for a ginger-leaning cocktail I make with Zaya, so I had to drop another $30 for that bottle. There goes the monthly bottle allowance.

So which was the winning Hurricane recipe?? I have become fonder of the orgeat batch I thought I had botched. The next batch I make will be killer, but in the meantime I have decided that the winning mai tai recipe and rum combination of the moment is: 0.75 oz Smith & Cross 0.75 oz Rhum St. James Hors D'Age aged agricole 0.75 oz Appleton 12 0.75 oz fresh lime juice 0.5 oz Clement Creole Shrub 0.5 oz homemade orgeat 0.25 simple spent lime shell and fresh spring mint garnish This is a bulletproof mai tai.
