QUOTE(Kid Gleason @ Oct 4, 2005 -> 12:19 PM) I believe it was the 1918 Series that the Cubs threw, to the Bo Sox. Allegedly threw to the BoSox. :rolly

QUOTE(Texsox @ Oct 3, 2005 -> 10:44 PM) I even am wearing a WLUP T-shirt in my Junior class picture. He's third from the left, wearing the yelow tinted glasses to hide his stoner eyes. And where the hell is the love for WXRT? Sure, the DJs all have hard-on for the same handful of bands and don't give enough airplay to some good new stuff, but I still think they're a model FM station for musicheads by musicheads.

Everybody loves an epic tragedy I guess. They were supposedly the best team most anybody at the time ever saw play, including the WS championship team of two years earlier. They were hands-down favorites to beat the Reds, based in large part on the anticipated stellar pitching performance of 29 game winner Ciccote. The facts that the entire success of the Gandil's and the other dirty player's plan to throw the series would come down to getting Ciccote on board (he went 1-2 in the WS of ciourse), and that Ciccote only did agree after Comiskey refused him a promised 30-win season-end bonus are the stuff of Epic Greek Tragedy. Comiskey's miserly ways costiong him teh WS and the franchise its good name, and the ensuing banning of the involved players by Judge Landis – essentially tarnishing them for all eternity – that is powerful stuff.

QUOTE(LVSoxFan @ Oct 4, 2005 -> 10:37 AM) If you want a great read, read Eight Men Out and you'll learn all about the Black Sox. Based on his handle, I'd say Kid already knows a thing or two about them. But yeah, great film and an even better book.

The official prediction is for lots of thunder – followed by fireworks – in the bottom half of every inning today.

QUOTE(Jordan4life_2005 @ Oct 4, 2005 -> 02:44 AM) I haven't been this nervous since right before I lost my virginity. Hopefully the team is not done that quick. I Kid Because I Care®

I'm not even sure what would categorically differentiate a 1919 jersey from a 1917 jersey. I know the red/white/blue themed jerseys in 1917 were only worn in the WS, and that basic "S-o-x" logoed jeresey was used all the way until the switch to the "bat and ball" emblem in 1932. I know a few years ago a line of "Black Sox 1919" leather jackets and stuff came out but that was a bunch of marketing bulls***. For good or bad, 1919 is a part of baseball history, like the color barrier was, like Ty Cobb sharpening his spikes was, like the boozing and womanizing of several baseball legends was. Like steroids are now. If I had a way-back machine I'd trade the scandal for a WS championship in a heartbeat, so I can't exactly say I'm proud of that page in team history. But I embrace it as part of the whole history, and I won't lose any piece of mind knowing you're decked out in Black Sox attire and somehow jinxing the team. Curses are for losers. Win. Or Die Trying, right?

Honestly, I'm quite ashamed at all of you that are choosing to put baseball before your jobs. :headshake :headshake I am busy slaving away at my desk like a model employee. But, I do know that I will take ill at precisely 2:30 pm local time and I will have to leave work so as not to get anybody sick. I'll start to feel quite a bit better on the drive home and will decide to swing by and pick up the kids from school. I'll suggest that we all go have an early dinner down at the pub with the big plasma TV and the good beer selection. And I'll be downright surprised when I look in the trunk of the car and find that I mysteriously have a bag packed with full Sox regalia that we can all change into. It's wierd, really. Almost like I somehow knew I was going to have to leave work early. . .

QUOTE(rangercal @ Oct 4, 2005 -> 12:22 AM) Besides the Red Sawx losing, I hope everything else goes well for you. Ditto that. Happy B-Day, but here's to more White than Red today.

QUOTE(Art Vandelay @ Oct 3, 2005 -> 05:35 PM) Yeah I tend to agree. I mean, after Sox fans celebrated lavishly following the '03 Bartman debacle, they could very easily have a "go f*** yourself" attitude! The ballclubs and personnel are both respective enough of each other. But I don't expect or even want Cubs fans pulling for the Sox in the playoffs, because I certainly didn't wish anything but failure on them in '03.

It's more plausible that Bush/Cheney were involved than not, of course, but since they are made of Teflon it's unlikely (and unfortunate) that they will see repercussions. i think the only way to ever get imperachment charges levelled is if the Dems manage to retake Congress in 2006 – not altogether impossible in light of the current top to bottom mess the GOP currently finds itself in. Treason is not enough for a GOP-run Congress to go the impeachment route, of course. To get impeachment proceedings going with these guys you need a blowjob. angry: Now, if only the Dems could execute something. . . anything. . . in the way of an actual strategy. :

I was 6 years old when he played for the Sox so no personal recollection of him as a player. But 61 is too young, and it is always sad to lose a member of the extended White Sox family. PS, I love this exchange from the link you posted, Ed:

QUOTE(Mercy! @ Oct 3, 2005 -> 03:18 PM) Intriguing choice. You know, it isn't even required that one be a lawyer to be eligible to serve on the Supreme Court. I know. I've been patiently waiting by the phone for weeks, but apparently I'm being passed over yet again.

QUOTE(Kid Gleason @ Oct 3, 2005 -> 03:15 PM) Pfff, screw YOU!!! I'm leaving on a plane in two hours to go collect my millions in Nigeria! Stay the hell away from my Nigerian millionaire-orphan-princess hottie!! She emailed me first.

Sounds like she's a far cry from the bedrock conservative nominee Bush promised the religious right, as was Roberts, so I think it's the best the left could have hoped for. SCOTUS mominations who are simultaneously at least somewhat centrist in their views and also openly fractous to the Bush/GOP social conservative support base is a better prospect than I would have figured on six months ago. I'm not happy with the new levels of cronyism achieved by this administration, of course, but I'm well past being surprised by it at this point.

Polka?!? 1959's Let's Go Go Go White Sox! by Captain Stubby and the Buccaneers was a fight song in a classic (if a bit sent up) march tempo and style. If that's what you're looking for, it has been posted a couple of times here (once in the last week or so), and is also available in Real Media format on the WSI Sox song page. If this isn't the song, and there is a Go Go Sox Polka I'm unaware of, please pass it along once you track it down.

QUOTE(Heads22 @ Oct 3, 2005 -> 12:40 PM) Well, the Cell is Flaxx's temple, sorta. There's the angle I need. If I ever get back into the whole spirituality business, I plan on doing it ala' carte, so I can take best advantage of the holidays afforded by each faith.

QUOTE(White Sox Josh @ Oct 3, 2005 -> 12:31 PM) I have school off that day. Institute day. I love New Trier. I also have Tuesday off for Rosh Hashanah. Still have to go to temple though but i only have to go for the morning service. Rosh Hashanah, that's it!! You're a lifesaver, Josh. I've been trying all morning to figure out how I was getting out of work tomorrow. So, how long does this whole conversion thing usually take?
