QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ May 28, 2008 -> 11:07 AM) That was his job. And its one of the reasons why that job is so tough. It's still bulls***. If it's that morally outrageous for you now, when you're cashing in with a book deal, it should have been morally outrageous for you then, when you actually had something to lose by standing up for it.

I had one of those.

Firefighters Being Fired For Not Speaking Spanish
Rex Kickass replied to DrunkBomber's topic in The Filibuster
There have been plenty of enclaves in the past where people never bothered to learn English, or never bothered to assimilate. And that is the case with many first generation immigrants. It's why there are strong Chinese communities in New York City, it's why there are Polish and Russian radio stations in Chicago. Hell, its why Delta advertises in Russian on billboards in Coney Island. The first generation is not as apt to assimilate as its children. I live in a very hispanic neighborhood. The parents might not speak English well, but the kids do. In fact the kids don't really speak Spanish all that well. If we're really concerned about foreign workers coming in and taking over our culture, maybe we need to stop allowing our employers to encourage that labor pool. -
Just a quick update. As the date for the ride gets closer, the training is starting to get more serious. Although I haven't had a ton of time to do longer rides, the shorter ones are coming along faster and furious. As long as the weather cooperates, I'm out there every morning riding now. I am really looking forward to making this ride happen... but I definitely need your support. This week I started my big push for more help. I am looking to find 100 $30 donations between now and August 1. If you can be one of those supporters, I'd really appreciate it. Click on the link on my signature, for a website where you can donate securely. Any and all help is greatly appreciated. Thanks Rex Kickass

QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ May 27, 2008 -> 04:10 PM) Why they keep pumping out those polls with Hagel in there, and no Richardson or Bayh, is beyond me. Why anyone thinks Bayh would be on Obama's short list is beyond me.

I remember Cheney talking about being helicoptered over Arlington Cemetery and seeing all the crosses and being inspired or something by it. There are no crosses at Arlington. There are lots of mistakes that candidates make in their speeches. Most of them aren't intentional. This one wasn't.

The Smart car for the US is kinda horrible. Automated manual transmission apparently is really really jerky, and the mileage is worse than my Scion in the city.

QUOTE (Alpha Dog @ May 21, 2008 -> 10:27 PM) But that's a different topic. Since it seems that the problem is with private companies, they can do what they like, within the law, of course. if they want to fire or demote perfectly good workers just because they can't pay enough to attract some english speaking employees, they can do that. But whichever it is, a part of my forst statemtn sort of still applies. How are these peopel in THIS country, getting a job, when they can't speak any english? While that may not be illegal, it is just wrong. Because there has never been an official language in the United States, just a dominant one. -
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ May 20, 2008 -> 02:44 PM) That didn't take very long. It never does. Classy.

The articles I've seen say that this is a pretty aggressive type of tumor and the average survival period is less than a year.

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20080520/ap_on_...8TeM_A88VWs0NUE There is plenty to dislike about Kennedy. There is also plenty to admire in his service to the Senate. Let's all hope for the best for the senior Senator from Massachusetts.

Here's one: The largest supermarket chains give up plastic bags.

He'll be under 100 delegates away from 2025 after tonight regardless... and Clinton will be 50 or so delegates away from being Mathematically shut out.

QUOTE (Mplssoxfan @ May 19, 2008 -> 12:27 PM) Jesse Ventura is making noises about filing for the MN Senate race between Norm Coleman and (probably) Al Franken. What a wild ride that would be. Latest poll in that race has Coleman beating both of the two Dems still competing for the endorsement. Franken has had a tough few weeks, and is only 7 points or so down in most polls. With Coleman riding right around 50, and not above it, MN is still a very competitive field.

QUOTE (knightni @ May 17, 2008 -> 05:26 PM) They said that it's serious but guarded right now. He's awake and talking. Non-life threatening, but it may be political career-ending. It's not career ending. It takes way more than a seizure to knock him off his spot as Senator.
-
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ May 17, 2008 -> 04:16 PM) Currently they're saying it was a seizure and not a stroke, although that was the initial report. If it was a stroke, it would have been pretty mild as he was making phone calls to cancel lunch appointments within a couple hours that morning. So that's pretty good. :-)

Tomorrow I am going on a training ride for the ESAR. It should be 40 miles round trip from Downtown Manhattan to Alpine, NJ. Apparently this ride contains a hill one mile long plus a ride over the George Washington Bridge. Click here to see the map! Did I mention that you can donate to help me raise money for HIV research and prevention? No, well, now I did. Click here to donate. http://ESAR6.kintera.org/rexkickass

Michigan Democratic Delegate Deal - unconfirmed
Rex Kickass replied to HuskyCaucasian's topic in The Filibuster
Clinton did get 55% of the vote, so I can understand getting a small bonus for that. A 10 delegate boost would be fine, I still think that the total number of delegates should be halved, however, and Michigan superdelegates should not be seated. I can understand not punishing the at large state party for the sins of the party bosses... but giving those party bosses who broke the rules their votes back at the convention seems wrong to me IMO. -
Indiana / North Carolina primary election thread

QUOTE (Athomeboy_2000 @ May 6, 2008 -> 08:43 PM) I think the stations are waiting to call Indiana until the "Lake Michigan" aka "Chicago Market" counties report. CNN has NONE of them reporting anything yet. Kieth Olbermann said on MSNBC it is too EARLY, not necessarily too CLOSE to call. The lead is down to 6 points now... and it's all Obamaland left to come in... -
Indiana / North Carolina primary election thread
Rex Kickass replied to southsider2k5's topic in The Filibuster
Obama is outperforming in counties he's supposed to lose hard in Indiana. With no results in Lake, Porter and St. Joe counties, plus no results near Evansville.... we're looking at half of Obama's support in the state. -
QUOTE (Rex Hudler @ May 3, 2008 -> 12:24 AM) Glad others are still working toward their goals. It's got kinda quiet in here lately. Rex: You have lost an amazing amount of weight by the way. That's gotta have you feeling a lot better.

QUOTE (witesoxfan @ May 1, 2008 -> 02:53 AM) If I weren't a poor college student, I'd gladly help out monetarily. Regardless of that, good luck in your endeavor and I hope you can reach your goal. This is fantastic. Wite: its totally cool, and thanks for your support!

Two more pounds this week. It's nice to see things moving again. 241 - less than 35 pounds to go! If I can get below 235, it will be thinnest I've been since 2001.

A correctly poured glass of Absinthe is one of the most curious feeling ingested drinks I have ever had the pleasure of partaking. And yeah, I did it with the real stuff - in Prague. You can buy imported Czech absinthe legally in the US now, actually, its just quite expensive. But the truth is that hallucinations don't come at first with Absinthe, only after repeated exposure at intoxicating levels. In other words, you gotta be really f'd up to see the green fairy. It's a different feeling to drink it, but the result is still the same in the end, you're just getting drunk.

Hey a quick update. Thanks to you guys, I've raised an additional $135 for the ES AIDS Ride this August. Thanks so much for everyone that have contributed so far and there is still plenty of time to do so even if its just a kind word. Just click here to do so securely. http://ESAR6.kintera.org/rexkickass Thanks so much.
