INTIMIDATORS BITE BATS 4-3 IN SERIES OPENER (Greensboro, NC) – David Cook’s solo home run in the sixth inning giving Kannapolis a 4-0 lead at the time proved to be the game winner in the Intimidators 4-3 win over the Bats at War Memorial Stadium in Greensboro. Kannapolis went ahead with three runs in the fourth off Bats Starter Victor Prieto. Tom Brice scored on a sacrifice fly, Leo Daigle on a wild pitch and David Cook on an error by the third baseman. Intimidators starter Daniel Haigwood had a perfect game through the first five innings with eight strikeouts before running into trouble in the sixth. With one run in and a man on first, James Spears uncorked a two-run shot over the right field fence pulling the Bats within a run, 4-3. Todd Deininger gave the Intimidators two scoreless innings in relief of Haiwood. Ehren Wasserma earned his team-high sixth save pitching an inning and a third. Game two of the series is Tuesday night at 7:00pm from War Memorial Stadium in Greensboro. Kannapolis returns home May 19th to Fieldcrest Cannon Stadium hosting Hagerstown for a three game series beginning at 10:00am on the 19th.

Phillips gives Barons seven strong innings in win Tuesday, May 11, 2004 A. STACY LONG For The Birmingham News MONTGOMERY - Birmingham Barons manager Razor Shines was working over his starting pitcher, playfully reminding Heath Phillips of his previous starts. "He told me he hoped I could go five innings," Phillips said. "I looked at him kind of funny. `Five, that's it?'" Five wasn't it Monday night in the Barons' 6-1 Southern League win over the Montgomery Biscuits at Riverwalk Stadium. Phillips worked a season-high seven innings, allowed four hits and handed Montgomery its fifth straight loss in front of an announced crowd of 3,691. "I was happy to get five out of Phillips," Shines said. "The fact he gave us seven was great and it was an outstanding seven." Phillips gave up a fifth-inning run - Montgomery's first run in 23 innings - and coaxed 10 ground-ball outs to improve to 4-1. The right-hander had lasted 5Ҡinnings in three of his five previous starts and worked five in the other two. Through five innings Monday, he had thrown only 50 pitches. "Me and our pitching coach, Juan Nieves, have been working on getting early contact outs," Phillips said. "We've been working on my consistency." While Phillips was baffling the Biscuits, the Barons were blasting them. Birmingham finished with four home runs, including three in a four-run sixth that broke a 1-1 tie. With two outs, Aaron McNeal hit his eighth home run of the year, an opposite-field shot to right off Montgomery reliever Jason Pruett (0-1). After Rob Sasser walked, Darren Blakely cracked a shot to left. Micah Franklin followed with a no-doubter to left. "I liked every single one of them," Phillips said. "It helps me and it helps their confidence." It was Blakely's fourth home run and Franklin's first. Sasser added a leadoff homer in the eighth, his second homer of the year. "Those came from a couple of guys who haven't been juicing the ball," Shines said. "Hopefully, that will get them started. When they're really going well, they can really help the ballclub." Birmingham took a 1-0 lead in the fourth when Nate Murphy walked and scored on a Blakely groundout. Montgomery, which had been shut out in its last two games, tied it in the fifth when Juan Salas scored on Robinson Cancel's sacrifice fly. Birmingham answered with four runs in the next half-inning. "Because we're not scoring many runs, that seemed like the game," Montgomery manager Charlie Montoyo said. "You could see it in our guys' faces."

Intimidators Drop High Scoring Affair To Captains 11-9 (Kannapolis, NC) – Micah Schilling drove in Luis Cotto in the top of the ninth inning for the game winning run leading the Captains over the Intimidators Thursday night at Fieldcrest Cannon Stadium in Kannapolis. Early on, the scoring was fast and furious. In the first inning, Lake County tagged Kannapolis starter for four runs including a three run blast by Ryan Mulhern. The Intimidators (13-13) did not trail for long tying the game and then taking the lead in the bottom half of the frame. The home team took advantage of two walks in the inning by Captains starter Sean Smith who did not make it out of the inning. Kannapolis had five hits in the inning including four runs in-a-row, to go ahead 5-4. The Captains (13-14) scored four runs in the second inning and benefited from a second, three run shot this time by Kevin Kouzmanoff to retake the lead, 8-5. Again the Intimidators responded, though not as successful as the first come-back, scoring two runs in the bottom of the second trailing, 8-7. The visitors added a run in the top of the third to go out in front, 9-7. In the fifth inning, Clint King scored from third on a wild pitch before Chris Young scored form second base on Antoin Gray’s single tying the game, 9-9. Middle relief was solid for both clubs. Todd Deininger allowed one run in three and two-third innings and Fabio Castro tossed two and one-third scoreless innings for Kannapolis. The losing pitcher was Ehren Wasserman (1-2) who gave up the final two runs in the ninth inning. Kevin Martin (1-3) took the win and Chip Sutherland earned the save (4).

Barons get solid pitching in win Friday, May 07, 2004 ARTHUR MACK For The Birmingham News MOBILE - After losing three out of four to the Chattanooga Lookouts earlier in the week, the Birmingham Barons were due for a breakout game with their bats. Thursday night against the Mobile BayBears in the first game of a four-game series, they got it. Nate Murphy's 2-for-4, three-RBI performance paced the Barons to a 7-1 victory over Mobile in Southern League action in front of 1,809 fans at Hank Aaron Stadium. Aaron McNeal tacked on two more RBIs with a 2-for-4 performance and Ruddy Yan went 3-for-4. Birmingham improved to 14-12, and moved into a half-game lead in the Southern League West Division. The Barons used four pitchers, with Dennis Ulacia getting the win. Ulacia, the starting pitcher, went 5Ҡinnings, allowing one run and four hits while striking out six and walking three. In all, Birmingham pitchers struck out 14 BayBear batters. Duncan McAdoo took the loss for Mobile, lasting only 31/3 innings and giving up all seven runs and nine hits. Game two is tonight at 7:05. "We played well tonight," said Birmingham manager Razor Shines. "The starting pitching was the key. Dennis, with his command, helped us. He located the ball well, and when we got the lead, he was able to locate the ball toward the middle of the plate." Birmingham wasted little time getting on the scoreboard, thanks to a four-run first inning. Yan and Mike Spidale started things off with back-to-back singles. Michael Morse walked to load the bases, and McNeal's bases-loaded single scored Yan and Spidale to make it 2-0. Morse scored on Murphy's double later in the inning, and McNeal scored on Rob Sasser's grounder to make it 4-0. "The four runs we got in the first inning gave us a big start," Shines said. "When you get a big lead like that, it deflates your opponent. But it's still early in the season to look at where you are in the standings." Murphy's two-run homer in the top of the third - a shot over the 400-foot wall - swelled the Barons' lead to 6-0. They added another run in the top of the fourth when Darren Blakely scored from second on Yan's single. Mobile's lone run came in the the sixth inning on Jake Gautreau's solo homer - his fourth of the year. The BayBears threatened again in the bottom of the eighth with one out and the bases loaded, but reliever Wyatt Allen got out of the jam by striking out Ben Johnson and Nick Trzesniak.

Purvis pitches Hogs by Keys Casey Rogowski belted two two-run homers, and Andy Gonzalez added a grand slam yesterday to power the Winston-Salem Warthogs to a 12-3 victory over the Frederick Keys and a sweep of a four-game Carolina League series. Starter Rob Purvis (2-3) went 51/3 innings and allowed one earned run for the win, and Paulino Reynoso pitched the final three innings for his first save. The Warthogs - with 12 home runs in their past six games - finished the trip with a 5-2 record, and the four-game winning streak is their longest this season. Winston-Salem gave Purvis a 3-0 cushion in the first inning. Ryan Sweeney and Brian Anderson had RBI singles, and Gonzalez, who walked, scored when center fielder B.J. Littleton threw the ball into the dugout on Sweeney's single. Rogowski made the score 5-0 with a two-run homer in the fifth inning, then added another two-run shot in a seven-run eighth. Gonzalez also had his grand slam in the eighth, when the Warthogs batted around and scored seven runs on six hits. The Warthogs finished with a season-high 16 hits, including four by Anderson, and handed the Keys their seventh straight loss. The Warthogs will return home and start a six-game homestand today at 7 p.m. with a game against the Wilmington Blue Rocks. Left-hander Byeong Hak An will start for the Warthogs. The Blue Rocks have not announced their starting pitcher.

Well, Allen did give up a hit as well as walk 2 in his inning, so despite K'ing all 3 outs, he did let bases get loaded. I am pleased to see the 3 K's maybe he can start throwing hard now that he is in the pen, he still needs command, very much of a long shot.

3rd 4 hit day of the week for Anderson, up to .324, 2 homers for Rogo, maybe a grand slam for AGon, Winston Salem is really playing well, course the team they swept is horrible. Purvis with win, Reynose a 3 inning save. http://www.sportsnetwork.com/merge/tsnform...px?GAMEID=11001
-
Win-Salem up 5-0 in 7th, I think Reynoso is working on the shutout, at least when I listened real quick on radio, he was on the bump. That team is really playing well of late.
-
Winston-Salem wins in 12 innings, 7-6, no box yet.
-
Here is latest roster, Flores on it, Lopez and Reynoso not, Reynoso is on W-S roster, he was not earlier was he? http://milb.sportsnetwork.com/merge/tsnfor...r.aspx?team=L31
-
Must not have been, I thought maybe he did cause yesterday I saw Flores was pitching and on the Kanny roster and Lopez was not, maybe he was taken off for one day and then brought back, due to needing a starter for DH. Also, Deininger is back, so they are at least 2 over roster limit, someone is gone.
-
Haigwood now 3-1 as Kanny wins 9-4, Haigwood, maybe my favorite minor leaguer in the system, was terrific, Lopez not so good in relief. Everyone contributed, Young, Valido, Gray, Schnur etc... http://milb.sportsnetwork.com/merge/tsnfor...px?GAMEID=12079
-
Diaz now 5-0, Valentine now at .037, Reed 2 hits and 2 walks. Big homer for Bobby Smith. http://www.sportsnetwork.com/merge/tsnform...px?GAMEID=14105
-
Not sure who started today, but Charlotte is up 3-1 after 7. BTW, Ginter leads IL in ERA and has 2 BBs and 19 Ks in 21 innings, mercy.
-
With Reyes sent to Barons, lets hope Shaffer finally gets released.
-
Deininger pitched, so his arm must have not been serious, that is good news.
-
Only reason I mentioned that about Lopez, was I saw Flores was starting, so I knew someone went on DL or sent back, I looked at roster and Flores was on it, but not Lopez.
