  1. Ray-Ray, I'd like to discuss some of this stuff. It would be interesting. Send me a PM. apologies for the thread hijack, everyone. I wanted to keep this 100% baseball related as it relates to baseball economics.
  2. Arguable in the early 20th century, LMAO between the FDR and Reagan admins. I won't argue that there were fewer worker protections in the early 20th century. There were a few things that were much better from 1940-70 and(most notably job and retirement security-and I'd argue that that is more important to most people than the things that were gained in the late part of the 20th century) and a lot of things that were worse. We're crossing into politics now and we should STFU.
  3. I get where you're coming from. Originally that's what it was. There was a period of time in the middle part of the 20th century where it was a hobby for rich people, but that ended when players won their rights in labor court. After that, it went down the path that nearly every business in America has gone down: Squeezing every last dollar out of their business with no regard for the human costs.
  4. That's what the intention always has been. The owners as a group have corrupted the system and the fans have bought the con. Buying a sports team is no different than owning a racehorse. Very few racehorses make money for their owners.
  5. He shouldn't. He should work in the best interest of baseball, meaning balancing what's best for owners, players and fans. The commissioner's job should be to be as the worldwide ambassador for baseball.
  6. That's the commissioner's job. I'm not going to go into this any further, as we've had this discussion in the job thread before. I believe that all businesses are a public trust. I believe that it's fine to make a profit as long as they're behaving in a socially responsible manner. (no polluting, paying employees a living wage, giving necessary benefits, retirement security, putting public and consumer safety over profit margin)
  7. Just my opinion, but....Sports franchises are a hobby for billionaires and not businesses in and of themselves. Convincing me otherwise is an insult to my intelligence. Any owner that treats their franchise as a business rather than a hobby should be forced to sell. They have a responsibility to the fans to win at all costs. Only owners with the mentality of a George Steinbrenner or Mark Cuban should be allowed to own teams. If an owner isn't ok giving out the contract that Gerrit Cole got this winter, then he should not be allowed to own a team.
  8. Moncada has to make it. He was 6th among 3B with a 5.7 WAR and 3rd among 3B with a 141 wRC+. Only Bregman and Rendon had a higher wRC+ than Moncada in 2019. I don't think Giolito makes it yet. He's in the 11-20 range in major stats, with his only top 10 stat being 10th in fWAR. Of Sox players, I think the only ones that end up making it are Moncada and Grandal. 1B is so thin league wide that Abreu could make it as well.
  9. I know a lot of Bears fans who despise Brady. I think everyone outside of New England despises Brady. Anyway, I know this isn't popular, but if Miami cuts him I'd bring in Rosen. He could be a complete dickhead, but as long as there is very little guaranteed money it shouldn't be a huge deal to cut bait. He's still only 22 years old. Also:
  10. Given that the Rangers are out on Castellanos, that might be why. It could be them on Donaldson. I want Donaldson to go back to the Braves as it would completely fuck the Cubs over. There's no way in hell they're getting Robles from Washington for Bryant. Texas has been searching for a 3B since Beltre retired.
  11. You're right. And I was wrong, Maggs didn't do it. I just thought he did. Abreu and Quentin were also older prospects. Quentin was 25 and Abreu was 27.
  12. Sox fans deserve for Robert to come in and light the world on fire. We haven't had anyone do that since...well as long as I can remember.
  13. I wasn't impressed with McCann's game calling skills at all. It seemed he was going straight off the scouting report and not adjusting to the reaction of the hitters. There were many times where hitters couldn't catch up to Giolito and Lopez fastballs but he's calling for off speed pitches anyway when they can't touch their heaters.
  14. Rich Hill is still good when healthy, which is never so it really doesn't matter.
  15. That's what I think. Idk how you don't call at the very least offsetting penalties there.
  16. I know a lot of Bears fans who despise Brady, but yeah, for the most part it's just me. I think Belichick is awesome and I think Brady is a whiny entitled b**** that has been riding off BB's coattails.
  17. They gave us the funniest acronym in football. BILLS=Boy I Love Losing Superbowls.
  18. In a vacuum, no. With the existing long-term salaries on the Hawks? Yes. Ask Toronto how having 3 forwards making $11M annually is working for them. Look at it this way: DeBrincat+Saad or Panarin? If the Hawks kept Panarin and paid him they'd lose DeBrincat, Strome or both. DeBrincat has replaced most of the offense that Panarin brought. The Hawks have fallen off. It would have happened no matter what. Once the backdiving deals were eliminated, this is just the salary cap doing its job. They've had to make some tough decisions. Regardless of whether or not Jokiharju was here, it wouldn't matter anyway. The Hawks are very bad. There was absolutely nothing based in reality they could have done to avoid this dropoff. I'm not arguing that the Joki/Nylander trade wasn't bad(it is and always was) I just think "disaster" is going too far. Nylander could still develop into a useful player and Jokiharju is a middle pairing defenseman at best. There were a multitude of reasons why he got traded. He should have been traded, just not for Alex Nylander. BTW, I was very vocal on the Hawks taking chances on guys like Nylander and Puljujarvi this summer, just not at the price that they paid. They'd have been better off if they traded the #2/3 for Nylander and kept Jokiharju, while not having Shaw. If you want to talk about an awful trade, you can start with the Shaw one. If you want to talk about a disaster of a trade, there you have it.
