QUOTE (Quinarvy @ Jan 24, 2010 -> 09:27 PM) Since when is Kankakee a quad-city? Plus, no one would confuse this dump with a big city. It ain't. I am just listing other towns of the Bloomington/ Peoria variety. Quad cities are what, Rock Island, Davenport, Moline, and.... I forget.

QUOTE (bmags @ Jan 23, 2010 -> 04:16 PM) I thought since I didn't brown the meat it would take longer... Yeah, browning really only helps bring out the flavor of the meat but the impact on the length of time it takes to cook meat is negligible.

QUOTE (SHIPPS @ Jan 24, 2010 -> 06:59 AM) Well...someone had to come up with it first. My guess would be Chicago. It's always some city that hosted a famous world's fair. A vendor who runs out of some important supply item comes up with an idea to keep slinging the goods and a star is born. Makes sense St. Louis or Chicago would get credit for something silly like cutting pizza in squares versus triangles. BTW, as much as I like any food done right, there is something to be said for a neapolitan style margherita pizza with an ultra thin crust, scattering of fresh buffalo mozzerella, simple tomato sauce, slices of fresh tomatoes and topped with fresh torn basil leaves (after it comes out of the oven) and drizzled with olive oil. If the ingredients are fresh, you can't beat it.

Why Carlton Fisk is still my favorite Sox player, ever

QUOTE (FlaSoxxJim @ Jan 22, 2010 -> 07:36 AM) "I started having a crazy idea in the fourth inning that Richard Nixon was the home plate umpire, and once I thought I was pitching a baseball to Jimi Hendrix, who to me was holding a guitar and swinging it over the plate." One time I covered first base, and I caught the ball and tagged the base all in one motion. I said, “OOH, I just made a touchdown.” -
Maybe I am a fool (very possible), but the Sox rhetoric is so over the top silly that I smell a trap. KW/OG are both gushing over how awesome Thome is but won't sign him to a peanuts deal. They are also acting like a DH by committee (particularly this specific committee) is the way of the future but fail to acknowledge there is one more roster spot to fill and no real prospects to fill it on the current 40 man. They have one of the best rotations in baseball but want to carry another arm in the bullpen (doesn't make sense even if linebrink is a stiff). Meanwhile, the Twins are hinting they will sign Thome. When someone asks about Johnny Damon, KW bristles like they said Frank Thomas. I am not saying they will sign Damon, but this has all the earmarks of the Twins trying to bait the Sox into signing Thome and the Sox trying to kick that can down the street another week while they try to work something out with a more versatile, healthier player (Damon, Hudson, trade for higher impact player, etc.). If Damon ends up getting his double figure salary, good luck to him. If it ends up closer to the middle single digits, then you might have something to work with. Meanwhile, keep stroking Thome publicly, giving him hope that he can spend 2010 near his family rather than up in the Twin cities. That might be enough to buy you an extra week of negotiating with other players and still have the ability to come back to JT with a respectable offer for all sides.

QUOTE (Leonard Zelig @ Jan 22, 2010 -> 05:41 PM) As far as saving parking spots goes, you guys do realize that a lot of times people come and clear them for their elderly parents/grandparents/friends/neighbors right? I thought old people stay inside when it gets really snowy and cold. Are you saying all those saved spots are elderly people trolling about in the snow? I am sure there are some but doubtful it is any significant percentage.

QUOTE (The Beast @ Jan 22, 2010 -> 05:33 PM) Bloomington and Peoria f*** up my argument that Chicago is the only major city in IL. No they don't. Rockford, Kankakee, and the quad cities don't qualify either.

Every newspaper in town, particularly the two big ones. Can not read them.

QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Jan 22, 2010 -> 04:04 PM) I don't acknowledge the whole chair/cone thing with parking spaces cleared of snow. Its a public street, I'm taking the spot if its there. Amen to that! I have seen pieces of ductwork, s***ty chair frames, old tires, etc. all used to mark a parking spot. I tip my cap to you for shoveling out a spot, but are you really that out of shape that you can't do another once you move your car? I wish the city had some type of parking ban after a snow fall in order to plow. I know it won't work anywhere but Germany but the spot marking is such a ridiculous practice.

QUOTE (JPN366 @ Jan 17, 2010 -> 07:13 PM) Brilliant episode. Wilford Brimley kills. "You want that mail now don't you Mr. Kramer?"

I don't think I saw anyone mention Mr. J's right off the Chicago/State Red Line stop. I first went there as a kid with my old man. He got the Dagwood Special with everything (1/2 pound burger with cheese, mustard, ketchup, homemade relish, onion, lettuce, tomato and sport peppers) and I got mine just with ketchup. I avoid fast food now, but every once in a while, if I have the urge, I want to make it worth my while and Mr. J's Dagwood Special with everything is it.

QUOTE (JPN366 @ Jan 16, 2010 -> 03:21 PM) I'm surprised that no one has mentioned Jerry's dirty talk to Elaine's chatty secretary. "...you mean the panties your mother laid out for you?" I love George's reaction to it. "It's not offensive. It's unusual, but not offensive." On that note, how about the time Elaine talked dirty into the tape recorder at Jerry's gig? The scene at the Diner where Jerry whispered an example to George and all we saw was George "ejaculate" the ketchup bottle had me rolling. That and the fact that all the guys got hot after Elaine made that episode classic.

I once ran over a 71 year old retired tool and die worker near Southport Lanes. Wait, what are we talking about?

QUOTE (BFirebird @ Jan 11, 2010 -> 11:27 PM) My wife and I looked forever for our 1st home. We started looking in early 2008 (we got married in august '08) and set our budget close to yours and we looked everywhere. We looked everywhere from the city at condos to homes in Darien, Downers Grove, Riverside, Brookfield, Hinsdale and Elmhurst, just to name a few. I am sure the prices have come down since '08 but thing we found is that even in the 'burbs your money doesn't go far. Lots of the homes in these areas are older and need work. We were mostly looking for places to renovate, but something was wrong with everything we found and we are probably really picky. (Leaking water in the basement, no storage space, etc.) We had to look at over 100 places. After I was ready to give up, we started to look at townhomes. I know that you said you wanted a house, but hear me out. Once we switched to townhomes we could start seeing nicer places that were not falling apart and we could renovate and make it our own. We ended up finding a really nice townhouse in Oak Brook that we completed gutted and made our own. We were lucky and had the resources and the desire to do so, but if you look hard enough you will find the place for you. We didn't end up buying until 2 weeks before the wedding and actually the 1st couple of months lived with my wife's parents because we didn't finish renovating...sad I know. The nice thing about taking a long time to find the right house (and being picky in the process) is it really forces you to educate yourself in neighborhoods, taxes, schools, and home quality. Those first few weekends of open houses are miserable, but before long you start eliminating specific towns, then areas of the town, and you realize what needs are really important to you for the money you are spending. At that point the process flies and you eventually find a decent place to start your life. Then, you buy it and realize how off base you were on your actual needs and get really nitpicky while saving money for that next, long term home (or complete rehab to make your own). ;-)

QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Jan 12, 2010 -> 09:46 AM) Where did everyone find their realtor? Or their mortgage broker (if you used one)? Ours was referred to us by a close friend that already lived in Oak Park and had used her before. Mortgage broker was referred by the realtor.

QUOTE (JPN366 @ Jan 11, 2010 -> 05:31 PM) The episode where Elaine dates a guy and can't tell what race he is. Then in the end, he thinks she's Hispanic, but they both realize they're white. ...and go to The Gap.

I think MM's admission of use over a decade is also him putting a nail in his own HOF chances. How can anyone look at his numbers, know that he was assisted for a good portion of his career, and still vote for him? I do not see it happening. The witch hunt, scapegoating, etc. sucks, but what is a better alternative. There were games thrown all the time and rumors of other world series not on the level but it wasn't until they banned 8 players (including a couple that looked pretty innocent) that the problem diminished dramatically. Sometimes there needs to be a scapegoat to get everyone else in line. I hope they continue to improve testing and do their best to identify the hypocrites (Sosa, Palmiero, Clemens, Bonds, etc.).
