  1. QUOTE (Steve9347 @ May 23, 2008 -> 08:53 AM) I'm calling out everyone who visits the site today (Friday, May 23) to vote for CQ 5 times or more. It won't take you long. 25 really does not take long either since you only have to complete the ballot once and then click a few times to have it register each additional time. BTW, what do you say we take this further? Why don't we draft a note for all season ticket holders to forward to their ticket reps basically stating that we are part of Soxtalk and trying to build a strong showing for Quentin. Since Owens is not on the ballot, it would be nice if the Sox personnel handing out the ballots at the park say something like, "don't forget to write in Carlos Quention." Further, maybe the Sox could use the jumbotron to lobby fans to vote for their favorite Sox players and again, "don't forget to write in Carlos Quentin." Hell, the "Punch AJ" campaign was so successful with T-shirts and all, you would think a "Write Carlos" T-shirt could work as well since he has become such a heartthrob even to heterosexual soxtalk males. It would be great if they had a table in the concourse area manned by someone with a premade stamp customized to fit CQ's name in the allotted space. I do not know if MLB would allow voting to be influenced to that level, though.
  2. QUOTE (WSoxMatt @ May 21, 2008 -> 09:11 AM) Wasnt it the 1st Cubs series that really started the slide last year?? Marcus Thames 9th inning HR off of AAAArdsma (?) to thwart a sweep sticks in my mind. The year before it was a loss to the Cubs with Mackowiak in CF that knocked the Sox out of 1st for good.
  3. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ May 20, 2008 -> 02:41 PM) How does that stop you from playing in the softball game earlier in the day? More importantly, since when does smoov b luv man dedicate himself to one woman?
  4. QUOTE (joesaiditstrue @ May 20, 2008 -> 05:49 AM) I'll pull one of my favorite quotes from an all-time great movie, i think it fits ozzie perfectly "Just because you are a character, doesn't mean that you have character." Thanks, Wolf.
  5. QUOTE (CanOfCorn @ May 19, 2008 -> 05:34 PM) Take a look at under my avatar... Born in Chicago, lived in Edgewater...moved to Skokie...college in Champaign...back to Lakeview...down to Austin, TX...back to Oak Park. So...Cubs fans, Cubs fans, mostly Cubs fans, but some Sox and Cards, Cubs fans, mostly Astros fans...not sure yet, lived here a month. Near Midway Airport to Oak Brook to Champaign to Lakeview to Oak Park. I think there is a decent mix of fans in OP. What major cross streets are you near, Corn? Ridgeland and Division here.
  6. QUOTE (rafacosta @ May 20, 2008 -> 07:45 AM) Originally from Brazil...living in College Station, TX You sound like a Brazilian version of my father. Born in Greece, played soccer his childhood/adolescence, came to Chicago in 1960 having never heard of baseball, and somehow got into the Sox. How did you get hooked?
  7. QUOTE (Whitewashed in '05 @ May 19, 2008 -> 08:02 PM) I didn't get to watch it, but ESPN really pissed me off when they were saying Buehrle's nono was not a dominant one and it shouldn't have been a no hitter. They also said that there were too many good plays by the defense that kept it a no hitter. I felt like slapping all of them and asking them when is there a no hitter with crappy defense? Okay, now that my rant is over, congrats to Lester. Wait, all due congratulations to Lester but... Did they REALLY say that about Buehrle? That is so ludicrous. I can't believe they need to compare no hitters rather than acknowledge the accomplishment itself.
  8. QUOTE (YASNY @ May 16, 2008 -> 08:54 AM) Willie Harris sighting .... He had the top play on ESPN's top ten last night. I was looking all over the board to see if anyone else noticed speedy Willie's catch. Unbelievable effort and execution.
  9. QUOTE (G&T @ May 16, 2008 -> 01:18 PM) I kinda like BJ I would like one, too.
  10. Watching the 2005 World Series video, it was obvious from the Garland clips that he was never a huge Guillen fan. The two did not seem to mesh well from a personality standpoint. With that said, Garland seems to forget that Ozzie's arrival provided him with the opportunity to prove he could pitch deep into ball games and learn how to get out of his own jams. Prior to 2004, Garland would walk the first batter or so in the 5th inning and be peeking into the dugout to see if Manual was coming to pull/rescue him. I am not saying volatile is better than laid back, but it does seem like JG is oversimplifying things a bit.
  11. QUOTE (Jenks Heat @ May 13, 2008 -> 10:24 AM) Orlando Cabrera had a worse game than Mark Buerhle and as bad a night at he plate as player could have. In 3 at-bats he stranded 8 runners. For a guy that is supposed to be able to handle the bat, that is his worst trait. Seven runs should get you a W.
  12. Any merit to the comment I heard on the radio that Buehrle showed up out of shape again this year? I know he did the same thing in 2006 and really worked on strengthening his core to post respectable numbers in 2007. I think he needs to be in good shape to maintain the control he is known for.
  13. QUOTE (Texsox @ May 13, 2008 -> 09:42 AM) Just for SS, the Ultimate Soxtalk Post I am getting most of this from the Cubune and Moronitti's column, this falls on that idiot KW and the terrible farm system we have, but if JR wasn't so cheap, Oz knew how to use him, and Bora$$ wasn't such an indiot, we'd have signed Crede in 2005 and traded Fields for a decent starting pitcher, since we all knew that Buerhle (he's NOT an ace) was going to suck and Jenks losing velocity was going to happen. Thankfully we have Broadway in the wings who we should bring up right away, before we trade him away for another version of Alomar. Plus we always go cheap in the draft, then turn over decent hitters to Walker to f*** with. Look at the rankings, The Indians and Tigers are going to be fighting for this division, while we watch the Cubs pop champagne corks. Meanwhile we'll be treated to Ozzie saying embrassing s***, Uribe's suckiness, and watch Brian Anderson sit on the end of the bench because he was born to the wrong parents and Oz hates him. Then Thome gets slammed but guys who played in 2005 get a pass. The real comparison should be 2008 to 2007, but instead it's 2005. Shall we start with all the great prospects we let slip through our fingers? Perhaps Chris f***ing Young? We really should dump Crede and Thome and try to get him back? But maybe we could cut some salaries and put some McCain style economics in place here instead of the spend, spend, spend, crap of Clinton or Obama. Sadly, this is not so far-fetched.
  14. QUOTE (TheBigHurt @ May 8, 2008 -> 04:38 PM) Ditto. SO who did what today? Did we actually have some offense??? I just got back from the game. Place was packed with kids from all over the city today. Similar to last night's walk through until Sox put 3 on the board answering the Twins 2 in the top of the inning. It was nice to get the lead, but still via the homer. Later, the Sox let a bases loaded with one out opportunity go by the wayside and I thought they were going to blow another game. Then something special happened. They scored three runs without a home run, the last two coming in a very unSoxlike manner. In fact, it was the way the Twins typically put away a game against the Sox. Sox are up 4-2 with the bases loaded. Hall hits a slow grounder that was gloved by SS. He throws to 2B and Uribe took out the second baseman with Torri Hunter-type authority. It was the first time I enthusiatically cheered the Sox for their effort and fire in ages. Then the next play results in a Twins error and another run. 6-2 Sox, which after a nice 9th inning by Jenks was the final score. Great ending to a well played game by the Sox.
  15. QUOTE (YASNY @ May 7, 2008 -> 07:58 AM) This thread should be mercifully closed. I am amazed this is still going strong at 26 pages. Someone please bury this beaten, bloody pulp of a horse.
  16. QUOTE (GreatScott82 @ May 7, 2008 -> 08:53 AM) Well i know its still early but as of NOW, his work with Floyd, Danks and Contreras are looking evident. 1-5 the rotation has been solid. The bullpen has been above average. So yea i would like to say Coop has done a great job so far. Now only if we can get this level of consistency out of Walker and his 'sluggers'. I have been a little disappointed in the bullpen thus far this season. Dotel scares me and I am concerned about overworking Linebrink. I know it is not going to be lights out every night but I was hoping for a little more consistency. I do not blame Cooper for this necessarily, but I am not going to call the bullpen anything more than average so far.
  17. I was about to start a new thread, but this one seemed to be slowing down after three posts so I will try to hijack/revive... I do not know about Coop being a manager, but I am really loving what I am seeing out of the starting staff. In particular, I am not sure if it is Cooper, Ozzie, the clubhouse, the players, the fan base etc., but it has been amazing to watch the development of Floyd, Danks and Vazquez since joining the team over the past couple years. I am certain the league will continue to make adjustments, but all three have been pleasant to watch, even through the abysmal hitting this past week or so. On that note, Contreras has not been killing us either. In fact, the only guy who concerns me before he even takes the mound is Buehrle. If Danks and Floyd continue to develop their skills, it will be nice to shuffle Buehrle down in the rotation to the 3 (or even 4) spot where he probably belongs on a stuff basis. Great work Coop!
  18. QUOTE (RockRaines @ May 6, 2008 -> 10:18 AM) There is more to it than the fact he's an absolute hole in the lineup. His mental lapses are something that wont be tolerated. We all have been saying for awhile that it appears Juan doesnt give a s*** when he's at bat, like he doesnt prepare or think things through. That is exactly the attitude that we want out of that clubhouse, and with his mental retardation yesterday, its time he goes. Like I said, while I am not 100% for dumping Uribe, I will understand if it happens. My issue is with Ozuna filling a roster spot. If you only have 4-5 guys to substitute and one has to be a catcher, you hurt yourself by giving one of the remaining spots to someone as useless as Pablo. He sucks as bad, if not worse than Uribe.
  19. QUOTE (Rex Hudler @ Apr 25, 2008 -> 06:28 AM) Gained a pound this week so back to 322. I'm not too disappointed since I didn't eat well this weekend, drank a lot of beer Saturday night and only walked twice. I was expecting worse. Time to get back to moving downward this coming week. I think you are still beating the white sox in walks, though. I just weighed in after a few weeks of not paying attention (but still working toward the goal). Down 2 more pounds and approaching the 200 pound barrier. Very excited about the warm weather and more exercise opportunities.
  20. While I do not care for Uribe overall, I must say he is far down the list of reasons this offense sucks. His defense has also been very good at 2nd base so I can live with him until a better alternative comes around. The same could be said for Ozuna on offense, except he is no longer valuable in any other capacity. I was at a game a few weeks back where he started at 2nd. His defense was atrocious. He had no range and looked lost in the field. Anyone watching him at the plate knows how abyssmal he has been both for average and OBP. He has never had any power and now the one thing he used to provide (speed) seems to be gone as well. That is the definition of a wasted roster spot. I do not agree with cutting Juan right now, but I would understand such a move. However, Pablo has to go!
  21. QUOTE (TitoMB345 @ Apr 28, 2008 -> 04:32 PM) Ugh, If we lose this ones on ARam. Why? What did he do?
  22. QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Apr 25, 2008 -> 07:29 PM) Anyone hear about the truck that drove into the Redline station at Chinatown? Couple people died. It happened around 6pm tonight. For those of you who don't know that's the train station right before 35th. I guarantee there were a ton of Sox fans on the train around that time. http://www.suntimes.com/news/metro/916498,...n042508.article Oh my! That is tragic. 50 mph and out of control?! Unbelievable.
  23. QUOTE (RockRaines @ Apr 25, 2008 -> 03:24 PM) Actually if we are planning for the future signing Crede for above market value while you have a low cost alternative in the wings would be an awful move. Crede is going to command 5+ years at probably more than 12 million per. If $12MM is the right number to sign him to an extension, I have one idea on how you might be able to swing by only increasing payroll by the league minimum.
  24. QUOTE (Wanne @ Apr 20, 2008 -> 05:32 PM) My girlfriend refers to that in terms of stuff I know..."you're a font of useless knowledge..." I LOVE IT!!!!!!! My wife says something similar. How does it go again? Oh yeah... "you're a f***ing useless asshole!" I don't love it so much.
