Fan Causes Controversy at Cuba game
Gregory Pratt replied to Buehrle>Wood's topic in The Diamond Club
QUOTE(YASNY @ Mar 12, 2006 -> 12:22 PM) You are entitled to your opinion. And so are you. It's well that we agree on that! QUOTE(Cuck the Fubs @ Mar 12, 2006 -> 11:50 AM) Actually, we've unsuccesfully tried to kill him 645 times since he came to power. Just goes to show how bad our government is. That can't be true. In fact, I'm absolutely sure that it's not true or that it's grossly exaggerated and an example of "lying with statistics." Not that I'm accusing you of lying, per se. It's like George Bush who says we've broken up twenty terrorist plots, but a bunch of them had merely been thrown out as ideas rather than have been real plots, and so I'd like to see where you get "645" from. -

QUOTE(YASNY @ Mar 12, 2006 -> 10:07 AM) Because it's put the Cuban ballplayers in a position to where they have to worry about what happens when they get home instead of concentrating on baseball. Castro is a dictator and if the don't handle these situations correctly, or something backfires on them, they'll have hell to pay. Part of the intrigue for me in this 'classic' is just how good are these Cubans? I'd like to find out while they are just focusing on baseball and not worrying about Castro's reactions to some needless BS. Well hell, the Cubans lost to the Puerto Ricans. Maybe we should just throw the tournament because Castro might become pissed off with them for losing that game? And if they get eliminated, maybe we should've dropped the games against them because, hey, Castro might not like it? Castro's not going to be nice to them if they lose, you know. I just don't buy your argument. I think it's appeasement of an unneeded kind and, worse, they're bound to be abused for losses, methinks. -
QUOTE(kyyle23 @ Mar 10, 2006 -> 10:52 AM) I think I got her fired when the supervisor got involved. Pilgrim Phone Sex Industries has taken a hit. And to answer your question Gregory Pratt, I wasnt feeling particularly horny at 9 AM that morning, no. But you were at 9 PM that night, I bet, and a certain phone number received your patronage!

QUOTE(SoxFan1 @ Mar 11, 2006 -> 08:00 PM) I am now... Let me start off with a big IMO: Personally, I am happy for the man. Serbs did not rejoice, we mourned. The man did what was necessary to stop HIS people from getting killed. The Serbians. The consensus among Serbs is that he did not die of natural causes and I am led to believe so but it was definitely true that he had chronic heart problems for years. Just like how the Serbs never did this is the same way they will cover up Milosevic' real cause of death. On top of all of that, he was denied treatment in a Russian facility in Moscow for his ailments even though they guaranteed that Milosevic would be back before the trials were set to start. The death part I will leave alone because no one will ever know for sure. What I do know is that many think he was poisoned, including Milosevic himself. Also, the fact that all Albanians sentenced were acquitted of ALL charges before any trials even started is BS. Clearly, the outside views of the entire situation are skewed and that is what most fail to understand, leading them to believe that Milosevic was out to kill anyone and everything that wasn't Serbian...which is not true. May his soul rest in peace. Well hell, now I know he's not a War Criminal!

QUOTE(Chisoxfn @ Mar 11, 2006 -> 11:41 AM) I think once your at 1000 pounds, a treadmill isn't an option. Well, yeah. I take my point back in that regard. QUOTE(Brian @ Mar 11, 2006 -> 11:51 AM) Exactly. If you are really heavy, there is no way you could/should exercise due to the effects on your legs and other physical ailments. Some personal trainers I know won't let you do any cardio until you are below a certain weight. How the hell do you get at 1000 pounds? QUOTE(LosMediasBlancas @ Mar 11, 2006 -> 01:04 PM) A proper diet is more important than a treadmill no matter how overweight a person is. Oh, by not having a proper diet. QUOTE(GASHWOUND @ Mar 11, 2006 -> 05:44 PM) Yeah, being that heavy you have trouble standing..forget about walking on a treadmill..and being that fat your heart might literally explode...I think you have to get an operation if you're that big. Right. I know that. I was just saying earlier that people have to take responsibility for their weight and that I think it's sad that people let themselves go to that extent as to need surgery.

QUOTE(YASNY @ Mar 10, 2006 -> 11:30 AM) Keep the politics out of it and play ball. The signs should be removed. You want the fans to keep politics out and play ball?! Seriously, the Cubans are only crying because they know that Castro would, I don't know, starve their families and rape their daughters if they didn't protest the protest. I'm not sure how many of them genuinely like him, but it's not that big a deal that some weirdo fan is holding up a sign. They're not in Cuba anymore, and people have a right to speak and hold up signs. Just like the Cubans have the right to stand up for themselves and say, "HEY WE LOVE CASTRO SHUT UP!" after the game or whine to the umpires. You know, why on Earth should people have to abide by Castro's rules or demands in other countries? It's all moot now, of course, because they've banned signs, but in principle I think the WBC officials have made a mistake. QUOTE(rventura23 @ Mar 10, 2006 -> 09:08 PM) If a fan wants to hold up an anti-Castro, anti-Bush, or anti-whatever sign, he should be able to hold it up. I dont think its the right venue to make a political statement since its a distraction from hte game, but I certainly dont think he should be forced to take it down Yeah, I agree wholeheartedly. Although I think it's such a b**** move to ban signs, frankly. Are we Cuba now? -
QUOTE(Milkman delivers @ Mar 10, 2006 -> 03:40 PM) IMO, there's just been one dream team. Now it's just a bunch of glory hogs that really don't give a s*** either way. Oh well, at least the baseball players seem to actually want it. Ummm, I'm pretty sure that everyone on the team except maybe Clemens really cares. A-Rod -- his sincerity I doubt because of his flipflops. But aside from that, I just get the vibe that the team is very happy to be there. QUOTE(whitesoxfan101 @ Mar 10, 2006 -> 04:34 PM) Yay, we're beating a glorified high school team. We are toast against Venezuela and the DR and maybe even Cuba. Ugh. It's baseball -- no we're not! If losing to Canada teaches us anything it should be that baseball can be WILD and UNPREDICTABLE!

God, that's pathetic as hell. It's not even cool that he lost all that weight through surgery. It's like stapling your nose closed to kick the cocaine habit. It's called a Treadmill, and it doesn't cost that much.
-
He wasn't willing to sign up at the beginning, and so he can go to hell now.

Some players aren't interested, some think it's the greatest moment of their careers. I'll bet Jason Veritek thought the Grand Slam against Canada was the finest at-bat of his life. People are entitled to dislike it, but I admire Selig for bringing this together and I'm glad that the Players involved and the other countries are enjoying themselves.

QUOTE(Felix @ Mar 10, 2006 -> 02:07 PM) He gawn! Nice pitch there for Contreras. Yeah. If he can be as good as his Second Half all year he's a Cy Young winner. Poor play by Fields just now, though. -
QUOTE(hammerhead johnson @ Mar 10, 2006 -> 01:59 AM) On Christmas Eve in 1987, my uncle told me that my dad married his hand in the 5th grade. I actually just figured out what he meant last week. Greg, you are the poster formerly known as....? Why did you get banned? Seriously though, there's something very familiar about your posting style. I've never been to this forum as a poster before creating this account, and I only started visiting SoxTalk in November. As to why I seem familiar, I'm not sure. I used to blog at www.officeoftheindependentblogger.com but technical issues brought me down. It's nice to meet you, though.

QUOTE(retro1983hat @ Mar 10, 2006 -> 08:48 AM) I am getting a bit worried that the Sox are trying to be characters like the 1985 Bears, who never won again after the Superbowl year. How much will that belt mean when we are in the midst of a 7-game losing streak? They're not "trying" to be characters. It's who they are. It's no different than last year, really. I think it'll be good for players to have silly things like this to bond over. Either way, it's not going to amount to any real big boost or decline in players skills. It's not like Bobby Jenks is going to hang himself when he doesn't walk away with the Belt.

My friend and I just stopped chatting, and she's particularly fond of the "Hurricane" story. So she tells me I should go to bed, and I say, "tell me I'd look cute in a hurricane and then I'll go to sleep," and let me add that as I spoke to her and even as I write this I'm quite sleepy, and she says, "You'd look cute in a raincoat." Now it's really bedtime. Huzzah!

QUOTE(Jeckle2000 @ Mar 9, 2006 -> 11:50 PM) I have you beat... I just found out two days ago I need to have surgury for my Crohns... They have to take my diseased intestine and sow the healthy parts together... Ohh and to make things cheerier I found out one of my best friends is dying of cancer... It's spread to far for them to do anything about it... Fun Fun... I'm sorry to hear that, mate. If there's anything I can do to help, PM me and let me know.

QUOTE(Jeckle2000 @ Mar 9, 2006 -> 11:02 PM) If Sweeney stays hot and Anderson continues to lick balls then I wouldn't put anything past Ozzie. Thats all i'm saying... You ignore the fact that Guillen is on the record as being very fond of Brian Anderson.

QUOTE(Jordan4life_2006 @ Mar 9, 2006 -> 10:59 PM) Barry Bonds will admit he's done steroids before this scenario happens. Bonds HAS admitted it, hasn't he, but with the caveat that he "didn't know" they were steroids.

Sometimes people say things that are weird or funny when they're inhibited by alcohol or prescription drugs. Sometimes people go crazy when they're angry. Sometimes you're just sleepy. I loved - and still love, really - a girl that I was with for eleven months until last February. One night, I rolled over in bed and said to her, "I'll bet you'd look cute in a Hurricane" before falling back asleep. She thought it was the cutest thing in the world. Your comments don't have to be limited to one, and they don't have to be romantic or attempts at being romantic. Oh! I'm also fond of saying, "[blank] doesn't know s*** from applebutter" and "He knows as much about [blank] as a Pig knows about Sunday!" but those aren't my own words, but President Harry Truman's.

QUOTE(rangercal @ Mar 9, 2006 -> 10:39 PM) I don't know. I have a hard time feeling sorry for canada. They knew coming in not to give up 9 runs and lose. They knew it was basically a must win. Because A) The US created a cusion when they pitched a shutout the first game and B ) Canada only beat the US by 2 when it was all said and done. You're right that they should've played better, but I still lose my starry eyed love for the WBC with things like this. -

QUOTE(rangercal @ Mar 9, 2006 -> 10:28 PM) I don't think it's ridiculous in my opinion. They Beat us. We Beat mexico. Mexico owned them. You need some sort of tie breaker. You need a tie-breaker, sure, but this one just reeks of cheapness, IMO. QUOTE(ZoomSlowik @ Mar 9, 2006 -> 10:29 PM) What would you propose be the tie-breaker in a 3-way tie? There isn't really an easy method of evaluation without relying on something like what they have. Even if you did something like run differential, Canada would still get screwed. I haven't got a counter proposal to it. I'm sure, now that that's said, that there must be one, I just haven't come across it. All I'm saying is that it seems like Canada is getting the Shaft unfairly, and that these rules seem a bit archaeic to me. Makes me almost want to hope that South Africa beats us tomorrow. -

QUOTE(nitetrain8601 @ Mar 9, 2006 -> 10:20 PM) I kind of agree with him. I mean, you had at least 2 big presences in that locker room. Everyone on that team loved Carl Everett. And yeah they had great chemistry starting off because most of these guys were here the previous year. You're bringing in a bunch of new people now and expecting some of them to take leadership roles. Honestly, I don't think PK is a leader. I kind of got that impression when he really didn't want to wear the "C". It seems like he doesn't want to be responsible if the team is doing bad. Don't confuse my statements as saying I don't think we could win it this year. I think we have as good as shot as anybody else, but chemistry is certainly a factor. Konerko just saw it as silly and unneccessary to have a Captain on a Baseball team, and he didn't want to be put above the team, even if only symbollically. -

QUOTE(rangercal @ Mar 9, 2006 -> 10:19 PM) so, it's just a win and your in type of deal? Yes. If we win tomorrow, we're in. Which is absolute bulls***, and it's a ridiculous way to deal with it, I think. If I were a Canadian tomorrow when Roger Clemens knocks South Africa to hell, I'd be furious at the Tournament's ridiculous rules. -
QUOTE(rventura23 @ Mar 9, 2006 -> 09:56 PM) On the more humerous side, the Onion reported on Bonds, pretty funny: Barry Bonds Took Steroids, Reports Everyone Who Has Ever Watched Baseball My friend's daughter works on the Onion, and so does her husband. I love them.
