QUOTE(Steve9347 @ Dec 17, 2007 -> 02:29 PM) You know, I was just thinking to myself this morning... if only someone would tell me something like this today in it's own thread. I'd be so happy. Sadly most people here do need this. This board makes me ashamed of my fanaticism lately.

QUOTE(spiderman @ Dec 17, 2007 -> 12:42 PM) Our #3, #4, and #5 starters are major question marks. Above all other reasons, this is why we're a 4th place team. Detroit's #2, #3, #4, and #5 are question marks and they seem to be the soxtalk favorite to win it all. Well, some of them are even question marks. They are proven below average.

QUOTE(fathom @ Dec 17, 2007 -> 10:56 AM) I'm not a big believer in Winter Ball stats, but Richar's stats are really disappointing. Richar is playing winter ball? What are his stats? -
The dow jones industrial average has nothing to do with the mitchell report.

Even if he did say "we are the team to beat." It doesn't mean that is what he thinks. You don't know what he thinks.
-
The GM never said that. He said that other teams are going to compete with us(which could very well mean, along with us, not against us primarily). He didn't say "we are the team to beat."
-
You're the GM. Firesale is the plan.

QUOTE(witesoxfan @ Dec 15, 2007 -> 09:28 PM) JR doesn't spend money; he is only the chairman of a team that has a $100+ mill payroll. Get real people. They spend money, they just have a s***load of bad contracts. They don't have a s***load of bad contracts. After Contreras, who has a bad contract? They underperformed last year is the main reason everyone thinks they sucked. They aren't likely to do it again. Also, they have too many large contracts and not enough young people. That's the problem, too many holes filled with contracts. The contracts themselves are pretty reasonable, even urine's* isn't bad. Its probably near market. *The spell checker wanted to change uribe to urine, so I went with it. -
QUOTE(DBAH0 @ Dec 16, 2007 -> 03:57 AM) Had our work's XMas Party last night. We had it at some big gallery near Melbourne, and when you walked in, there was a red carpet with about 20 waiters / waitresses each side of it holding out beer / champagne / wine etc., so that was a nice feeling. Pretty much drank Stella's for most of the night, but the highlight of the evening was when I could purchase a Leffe blonde at the place next door that we went to afterwards. Although the cost was rather steep ($9.50 ugh), Leffe would be one of my top 2 or 3 beers right now. I like leffe a lot too, but there have been occasions where I found it repulsive.

QUOTE(Linnwood @ Dec 15, 2007 -> 03:57 PM) You have got to be s***ting me. +1 world series champs?

I'd like the sox to sign him at that price.

Roger was my favorite player in beisbol. Sucks to be me.

QUOTE(daa84 @ Dec 13, 2007 -> 10:49 PM) yeah but you can basically only trade thome to AL teams....and i doubt KW would deal him in the division....so you are talking about a total of 9 teams that could take him...red sox have ortiz, orioles arent the right fit now, rays wont spend that money, blue jays have thomas...yankees have damon at DH (though they might be a reasonable possibility)...the A's would only take him if we paid just about all of his salary...so basicalyl the list of tradable teams is seattle anaheim texas and maybe the yankees..... 3-4 teams isn't bad.

QUOTE(The Critic @ Dec 13, 2007 -> 08:54 AM) You win, you get the credit. You lose, you get the blame. That's how it goes. If a team goes from World Series Champions to 90-game losers in two years, people are not going to be happy about it. "Swing and a miss" or "not stepping up", if the result is a bad team, what's the difference in the long run? And FWIW, the Cub fan stereotype is that they NEVER complain, they just go to the Friendly Confines, drink beer, ogle women and cheer for anyone in Cubbie Blue. The Sox fans are known as the ones who complain and stay away when the team is bad. Just thought you might want to get the stereotypes right when you feel like throwing them around. I think the cubs fans are known for complaining a lot, including booing their own team but still showing up. Not never complaining. All the ones I know complain a lot.

QUOTE(klaus kinski @ Dec 13, 2007 -> 08:43 AM) In truth, he had more to do with quickly dismantling a World Champion, than putting it together. This team had a long string of 90 win and competitive seasons under Ron Schueler than under Williams. Williams was busy ruining the farm system he was in charge of before being given the GM job over more qualified people. Larry Himes drafted and developed our star players of the early 90's. Know what you are talking about before calling me an ingrate. What? If anything he was guilty of hanging on to that '05 core for a season too long. Unless you think an oft injured freddy garcia, cliff polite, aaron rowand, and neal cotts were the core of the team and would have helped this team win last year.

I said a bit cheap. Cheaper than he would have been. Two reasons. He wasn't very good last year. He won't be starting this year.

QUOTE(soxfaninpa @ Dec 13, 2007 -> 08:02 AM) I would rather see Anderson or Sweeney over Owens. But I would rather see Owens over Coco Crisp or Juan Pierre. I can't see giving Gio or Fields for one of those bums. I really hope he is not stupid enough to do something like that. A couple of weeks ago KW said 3B had been decided and would be revealed shortly. It obviously wasn't fields because they tried to include him on cabrera. they previously said if they got Mcabrera they would use him in LF. So I think the plan was Crede at 3B, MCabrera in Lf, Owens in center. I just hope they don't trade fields because no one wants crede and they want a CF. I can see KW making a deal like Fields for Crisp and Craig Hansen. I would agree with you but boston probably wouldn't want fields as a centerpiece. They already have two third basemen. Gio is more likely imo. Edit: More likely as a mistake. I doubt kenny would give up much knowing that crisp will be a bit cheap.

QUOTE(Linnwood @ Dec 13, 2007 -> 01:32 AM) Are you f***ing s***ting me? Fukudome took less money so he could be the first Japanese Cubs player? Wow, just f***ing wow. I guess the mystique of Wrigleyville has made it as far as Japan. Oh come on. This board's negativity is getting more annoying by the post. Do you really need to inject f***ing bulls*** like this into something to be negative? There are plenty of real things for people like you to be negative about. Pretty soon I will have had enough of this place. According to the article, he didn't target the cubs. He just wanted to be the first japanese player on the team he signed with AND a right fielder. Wrigleyville? He's probably never heard of it.

How good is his defense at 3rd?

Rangers non-tendered RHP Akinori Otsuka

I contend that somebody will offer something better than an incentive based deal. They almost always will, despite that being often suggested. Don't get me wrong, there are incentive based deals out there but they are few and far between. -
Someone mentioned Carl. I haven't seen anyone mention JD. I doubt he is on roids. He has had monster years before 2006. I think he is just a rather large and powerful guy. Plus those great years he had were in KC. I think the field as well as him maturing played a large part in the difference in HR. Who knows. I could be wrong.

QUOTE(NorthSideSox72 @ Dec 12, 2007 -> 03:29 PM) On the list of desired CF's, in order of preference... Hunter Fukudome Rowand Hamilton Ramirez Crisp Owens Pierre Yikes. Running out of possible improvement players. Mark me down for Hamilton. How long would he be under contract? If its 3 years or more, I say its worth losing the pitching.

Lol @ Hunter showin off his panerai watch at the press conference.
