QUOTE (bmags @ Nov 12, 2014 -> 11:23 AM) Of course, when the problem isn't what was actually said, but the "optics" of what was said, you know it's a real hard-hitting issue. I think the problem is what was actually said. He said he doesn't want to be sore at his son's graduation or at meetings post retirement, so he will take a game off here and there. I am speculating he is using that as an example because someone told him he has to lighten it up a bit or he may get injured again and be limited physically the rest of his life. The Rose camp is a problem. They feed Derrick things to say and after it gets filtered through his brain, something that a lot of people would be puzzled by, is said. If he is so concerned about being "sore" (his words) at his son's graduation, why doesn't he just retire now? Why risk it at all. The will he or won't he comeback a couple of years ago was also a Reggie Rose production. Apparently, the Bulls wanted to issue a press release that he was out for the season (which he ultimately was), but Reggie wanted to keep the speculation alive. It ultimately made his meal ticket look bad. I actually should be fair to Reggie. While he is a problem, it does seem he has been a really good brother. Ultimately Derrick deserves all the credit for his success, but Reggie deserves a lot of credit for keeping him in a position to do so.

IMO, what the Bears need to do is hire Bill Pollian as a consultant or interm President, and have him evaluate the football operation from Emery to Trestman to all the coaches. Have him clean house if the entire house needs to be cleaned and put the people in place to be successful. Ted Phillips, God love him, is an accountant. Let him handle the business side. The football side needs to be handled by a football person. Enough of the BS.

Max Scherzer
QUOTE (Eminor3rd @ Nov 12, 2014 -> 10:54 AM) That's what "per cap" means. The sox aren't going to sign Scherzer. It would be a bad business decision. If you think that "showing the fans you're serious" will drive attendance, you haven't been paying attention to the white sox and attendance over the past ten years. Attendance will increase when there is a winner, and not before. If you think adding Scherzer to a 74 win team will do that, then we disagree on a different level altogether. If you used that formula, you really wouldn't sign any free agents. The Sox signed Jose Abreu and attendance went down. You like Russell Martin. If he gets $15 million a year, using your formula, for him to be "worth" the contract, he is going to have to attract 5k more each game. That isn't happening. They just need to sign guys that will help them win consistently for a decent period of time. No one player is going to increase attendance, and I don't think anyone here would be naive enough to suggest it. Maybe some winning will. We all know, losing will not. Personally, I don't think it makes sense the Sox would be in the Scherzer bidding. The years and money and his agent all suggest otherwise, and until at least one of those is shown to not be the case anymore, I can't believe they are even interested in negotiating.

Jeong-Ho Kang
QUOTE (shysocks @ Nov 12, 2014 -> 10:30 AM) People say the Cuba Serie Nacional is the rough competitive equivalent of A ball, if I remember right. Where does the Korean league relate? I think it would be tough to tell. Eric Thames, who played for Toronto and Seattle and is similar in age, put up close to the same power numbers this year in Korea. He did show some power during his MLB career. I wouldn't want to be the guy that gave him a ton of money, but it is possible he could be a steal if you got him on the cheap.

I'm sure the Sox will get some knoweledge from Man Soo Lee. I think he is managing in Korea these days.

QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Nov 12, 2014 -> 08:58 AM) It's amazing how bad he consistently screws up the PR game. Those comments were just a big F-You to the fans. It seems to be, but I don't think they are meant to be. I just think the guy is probably one of the nicest guys in the NBA, one of the most talented guys in the NBA, and in the team photo for least intelligent guys in the NBA.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Nov 12, 2014 -> 07:34 AM) He said exactly that to the media yesterday. He also said he may sit some games because he doesn't want to be sore when he goes to his son's graduation, or when he is retired from basketball, doesn't want soreness when he goes to meetings. It's nice you can take a break from a job that pays you $19 million a year now, so your calf might not be sore when you go to a meeting in 20 years. I am sure someone told him he needed to tone it down so he wouldn't have another major injury and limp in pain the rest of his life, but Derrick isn't a rocket scientist. The Bulls either need him not to talk to the media or in some way train him to do so. Maybe that is impossible, but some of these quotes are going to tick people off.

QUOTE (LDF @ Nov 12, 2014 -> 08:28 AM) that for the break down. I am surprise that they had a lost in 2013. They did lose 99 games. An extra 500-700 people a game through the turnstiles a game probably makes that at least break even considering ticket, and other revenue. The $25 million in extra TV money and lower payroll will make 2014 profitable. JR already admitted to that. Attendance was down. Sure they lost a couple of sponsorships. But Gold Coast tickets wasn't paying $5 million a year for naming rights, and neither was Bacardi. They did gain a sponsor for the Stadium Club.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Nov 12, 2014 -> 07:45 AM) I think they did have an expected potential loss the year they signed Dunn and I think they did wind up losing money that year IIRC, or at the least were very close to it. They did so because they were hoping that selling playoff tickets in conjunction with season tickets the next year would make up for that potential loss. That's not an incorrect thought line if your team is in a position where 1 player can potentially be the difference between making and missing the playoffs and its a good explanation for why big ticket FAs are so often overpaid - they are being paid based on their ability to make a big difference during that 1 year period. That year's white sox are also a prime example of what can go wrong with that line of thinking - it destroyed the ability of the team to be major FA players to fill holes for the next 3 years. According to Forbes this year's total not available yet: 10.7 million profit 2011 22.9 million profit 2012 2.7 million loss 2013 They didn't make the $26 million and $27 million profit Forbes claims they made the 2 seasons before Dunn, but they did alright, especially since breaking even is the goal.

According to Forbes, they made a profit every year since they last lost money in 2001 when Jose Canseco was a White Sox. They then lost a few million in 2013. The cumulative profit was $189 million over that time.

Isn't his agent Boras? Another reason to think there is. 99.999999% chance he signs with another team.

QUOTE (Jake @ Nov 11, 2014 -> 02:25 PM) I still haven't heard/can't come up with a great explanation for why the offense has regressed so drastically since last season. McCown's run certainly propped up the season numbers to an extent, but that was only ~6 games. Cutler played much better than he has this year. The main change is that Cutler got a contract - do you think that explains it? I heard they are playing against a lot more zone and can't figure it out.

Mets/LAD/NYy interested in Alexei, according to Levine
QUOTE (StRoostifer @ Nov 11, 2014 -> 11:33 AM) Agreed and that's the OF the have the most interest in dealing. Bam! That's what I'm talking about. IMO, I take five years of control with a filthy 24 year old right handed starter in Wheeler over Alexei in a heartbeat. I would do cartwheels around the house if Hahn pulled off Wheeler for Ramirez. Hahn has about as much chance of getting Wheeler for Alexei as he does of sending Jordan Danks to the Angels for Mike Trout.

QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Nov 11, 2014 -> 07:54 AM) The lowlifes that went after Trestmans daughters on Twitter should be forced to move out of their parents basements http://t.co/FO1WPu9K5S Pretty strange how people like that are embarrassed by how a football team performs. It would seem from their tweets, being embarrassed about anything would be impossible.

Which "bad" contract would you most be willing to take on?
Why would one be compelled to take on a "bad contract"? If the other team is throwimg in money, then maybe it isn't bad anymore. But you would have to know how much.

QUOTE (TheTruth05 @ Nov 10, 2014 -> 02:44 PM) It's unfortunate these last 5 games will still have a packed house and they'll still be showed in bars, pubs,at home, etc. This team deserves a complete boycott. They're feeding their fans this fluff crap and any thinking Bears fan doesn't deserve that. I thought after this last debacle, even the Bears would have done something.

Since Lovie's demise and the Bears bringing in the QB whisperer, who had to get approved by Cutler to get hired: Cutler 8-12 as a starter.

QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Nov 10, 2014 -> 02:18 PM) First back-to-back 50+ point defensive efforts in the NFL in over 70 years, yet no coaching changes made. I shouldn't have expected anything different from the McCaskeys. The smart fan thing to do would be to boycott the next few home games, but all the tickets are already paid for, might as well show up. (Maybe with a paper bag on my head) With the cold air that is supposed to stay in Chicago the rest of the month and the Bears playing 5 of their next 6 at home, people who normally don't go to games, I am sure can find a bargain.

QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Nov 10, 2014 -> 02:18 PM) I think firing Trestman makes most sense right now. Move Kromer in to interim head coach and go from there. See if that puts things in the right direction or not. At this point, how can anyone look at it and go, yes, it makes sense to have him as a coach. It is more then just the results on the field, it is how everything is being ran, etc. When I was thinking about this, I totally agree. It makes a lot more sense to fire Trestman than even a coordinator. And if you don't want to fire a coordinator, how about re-assigning duties. Make Tucker a LB coach, put DeCamillis in charge of keeping the Gatorade bucket full.

Jim Miller said Cutler coughs it up like a Pez dispenser. I supposed Emery's next "research" project will be comparing Miller and Cutler turnovers.

QUOTE (bmags @ Nov 10, 2014 -> 10:35 AM) This isn't an indicator of a bad coach. Coaches don't do that to their assistants. I would agree, at least most of the time. What if the Bears said an assistant or 2 has to go now, and if you balk, you will be heading out the door with them? I just don't think Trestman has the status to even try to bluff falling on the sword for his assistants. Maybe he would do it anyway, but something has to happen at Halas Hall. I would guess there is a chance Trestman doesn't get canned because he has 2 years on his deal, but is there any way Tucker and DeCammillis are Bears coordinators in 2015? I would think zero chance, so why not make a statement now? This season is over. 1 team in NFL history has make the playoffs starting out 3-6.

Did anyone else see Cutler's press conference last night? That hat he was wearing plus the stupid look on his face just oozed something amiss to me. Take a shower, get dressed, look like a pro when you are facing the music. The guy looked like Jeff Spicoli.

QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Nov 10, 2014 -> 09:34 AM) I don't think it is symbolic to fire Tucker or Decamillis right now. They are both not doing their jobs, and it is quite alarming how bad it has become. Those are two coordinAtors in way over their heads and losing them right now won't hurt one bit That being said, I absolutely did not expect to hear Trestman put his coordinators and assistants on blast, it isn't in his nature. He is like Jauron, he is gonna go down with the Shoop Is Shoop at Purdue now?
