White Sox sign Zach Duke, 3 years, $15 million
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Nov 18, 2014 -> 01:06 PM) No more minor contracts with invites to spring training! They are spending that $189 million! If you ever learned how to read my posts it would be incredible. But this is along the lines of Keppinger, and Belisario and Downs and Paulino, except a little larger. It isn't a player who has had a lot of success. He has been around forever, and he will be paid based on 2014. I'll bet anyone Surkhamp is better than Duke in 2015.

White Sox sign Zach Duke, 3 years, $15 million
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Nov 18, 2014 -> 12:59 PM) You should be thrilled, they aren't going cheap any more... No, this is exactly what I don't want. Signing one year wonders who are over 30 and have been released a couple of times the last 2 years. Coming into this season, the White Sox didn't think he was worth 1/5 of what they paid Scott Downs or they could have signed him for exactly that. Now he's worth $15 million over 3 years?

White Sox sign Zach Duke, 3 years, $15 million
QUOTE (Rowand44 @ Nov 18, 2014 -> 12:45 PM) Ya I have a hard time getting angry about the 3rd year, if we have to eat 5.5 mill then oh well. That said, definitely a bit of an overpay but as others have said we were going to have to spend a little money on the pen and I'd rather go with Duke for 15 total than Miller for 40(if he gets around there of course). You eat Duke, you eat Keppinger, guess what that adds up to?

White Sox sign Zach Duke, 3 years, $15 million
Supposedly it is multi year and from what I was reading the other team involved was the Mets and they weren't willing to go 2 years. So I would imagine it is fairly cheap.

Dodgers aggressively pursuing Alexei
QUOTE (bmags @ Nov 18, 2014 -> 11:38 AM) Sox trade: Alexei Ramirez Chicago Receives: LA weather for next 30 winters Pull the trigger hahn. I'd throw in Abreu and Sale for that return.

White Sox sign Zach Duke, 3 years, $15 million
QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Nov 18, 2014 -> 11:51 AM) If you go from throwing fastball, cutter, changeup to two-seamer, cutter, slider, curveball, you can see drastic changes like that. At age 31? I doubt it lasts. Do you have some examples? If it is a one year contract with some kind of option, that's fine. But these 3 year deal suggestions would be crazy to give him.

White Sox sign Zach Duke, 3 years, $15 million
QUOTE (scs787 @ Nov 18, 2014 -> 11:47 AM) Let's hope we get 2012/2014 Zach Duke and not the Zach Duke who was a dumpster fire in 2013....Fairly meh on the signing till I see how he performs. You really don't want the 2012 version. He only gave you 13 innings. If it is for multiple years at a decent rate, this is the pitching signing equavalent to Jeff Keppinger. .

White Sox sign Zach Duke, 3 years, $15 million
QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Nov 18, 2014 -> 11:48 AM) I'm good with this. There's a little bit of a Will Ohman feel to this signing, but Duke was really, really good last year and it coincided with him throwing a cutter. His K-rate went from Buerhle to Kershaw. I doubt that continues.

White Sox sign Zach Duke, 3 years, $15 million
QUOTE (raBBit @ Nov 18, 2014 -> 11:43 AM) Jesus DA, what did you want for LH in the bullpen? This guy has been horrible for a while both in the bullpen and starting. He has one crazy good year. I read on here don't spend money on the bullpen. REGRESSION is almost guaranteed. It's worth a little money to see if he actually has become someone you can count on, but not a lot.

If it is any more than a couple million guarantee, it is pissing money away.

Andrew Miller signs with Yankees
QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Nov 18, 2014 -> 10:43 AM) Well, Montas hasn't pitched for the White Sox either, and every GM in baseball would take him over Bassit. He was essentially just a "lottery ticket" at the time of the Peavy trade, along with Rondon and Wendelken. To say that ANYONE expected him to be knocking on the door of the Top 100 MLB prospects a year ago would be laughable as well. And he throws 100. As I stated, there is a chance this guy might be great, a better chance he may be OK, but probably about as valuable as a lottery ticket with incorrect numbers.

Andrew Miller signs with Yankees
QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Nov 18, 2014 -> 10:29 AM) They did give up on Neal Cotts. That worked out pretty well. I have no idea why that would be relevant, but this is a guy the A's gave up for one month of Adam Dunn. The odds are overwhelming that he never plays for the White Sox. To say he is anywhere near Bassitt who has pitched for the White Sox is laughable at this point.

Russell Martin signs with Toronto, 5 years, $82.5 mill
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Nov 18, 2014 -> 10:00 AM) Also worth noting... MLB Draft @MLBDraft 19m19 minutes ago .@BlueJays sign Russell Martin, forfeit No. 17 pick and slot value, which, in 2014, was $2,200,600. Updated order: http://atmlb.com/1xsOfmA I would guess they are hoping Martin has a great 2015 and then they will try to trade him. I am not sure if he received a NTC, but it seems to me getting one almost guarantees you will be traded at some point.

2014-2015 MLB off season player movement and rumors thread
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Nov 18, 2014 -> 09:16 AM) And they are still drawing over 30k a night, even after six years of terrible baseball. You don't judge a fan base on how they draw when they are good. Everyone shows up then, well except Tampa, who really are the worst fans in baseball, but you rate them on how they act when things aren't well. The Cubs have been awful for 4 forever, yet they still drew more in 2014 than the White Sox have every season except 4. 2 were the first 2 years at the new park, and 2 were right after the World Series. They drew more than the 1993 White Sox. Drew more per game than the 1994 White Sox, and drew more than the 2005 World Champion White sox. Cubs fans probably know very little about baseball, per fan, but I agree with you, nobody can question their loyalty. Like you said, White Sox fans need the team to meet certain criteria for them to attend a game, and even when those are met, new reasons not to attend are conceived.

Sox sign Melky Cabrera
Kemp would be great, but Crawford is a guy who, if you are prepared for him to sit out games at a DRose clip, would be interesting to have on the team. The Dodgers would have to eat a lot of money though. If he could be a regular player, he can still put up numbers, but that doesn't seem too likely.

Andrew Miller signs with Yankees
QUOTE (HickoryHuskers @ Nov 18, 2014 -> 08:48 AM) Sanburn can't possibly have any value. We were told 1000 times last year that it would have been better to cut Dunn and eat his salary than try to trade him. There is no chance that Sanburn will amount to anything. He has about as much value as a Mega Ball ticket. It's possible he is worth a lot, even more possible he is worth a little, but highly likely, worthless.

white sox heavily in the left handed relief market
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Nov 17, 2014 -> 03:11 PM) I don't know how the rest of it is even relevant, but the bottom line is the Sox have a history here to read. They have always been able to pay their middle of the order hitters a lot of money, and if they can't find one, they will get one off of the free agent market. Relief pitching, they have always tried to do on the cheap. I see no compelling reason to believe the Sox will sign Andrew Miller, even if they have met with him or inquired about him. The last time the bullpen was this bad was 2007. Although not as expensive as Miller, Linebrink and Dotel weren't exactly cheap for those years. KW signed them. KW has already announced he is done with rebuilding. The team friendly contracts they signed their best players to , allow them to spend a little more in other places. Whether it is Miller or not, there is probably going to be additions that they financially have never done before.

white sox heavily in the left handed relief market
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Nov 17, 2014 -> 02:57 PM) That conveniently ignores the contracts given to guys like Magglio and Konerko. The Sox haven't given ANY reliever (internal or external) a contract anywhere near what Andrew Miller is looking for. That is a HUGE difference. But it's the price of poker. Free agents get more money. Paulie took a little discount, but might not have had they not just won the WS. Guys are getting more expensive. If you want them you are going to have to pay or develop them just to lose them. They never gave anyone what the gave Abreu and he had never played one game in the major leagues. If they aren't willing to pay these prices, they won't get these players. It doesn't even make sense to speak with them. If they are engaged with Miller, I would think they are in the ballpark money-wise.

white sox heavily in the left handed relief market
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Nov 17, 2014 -> 02:41 PM) The difference is the White Sox have both spent big in Cuba, and they have spent big on middle of the order hitters in the past. Up until they signed Dunn, then Abreu, the last time the White Sox spent more than $20 million on another team's free agent was in December of 1996. Albert Belle.

Cards swap Miller for Heyward
QUOTE (oldsox @ Nov 17, 2014 -> 02:11 PM) Are you sure about that? didn't they trade Adam Wainwright to the Cards? For one year of JD Drew who was awesome as a Brave. One season, 8.6 WAR. That is an MVP-type year. That trade was about the exact opposite of this one. In the long run, I don't think the Braves will be getting the fleecing on this trade some think. For a message board that loves a lot of everyone's crap, Shelby Miller sure does get written off pretty quickly.

I am kind of shocked. We were told Joe Maddon would attract free agents.

Heyward takes Taveras' spot.
