  1. QUOTE (Soxbadger @ Sep 9, 2014 -> 02:56 PM) Not really that ironic. Most people dont get charged with crimes for 1 single incident, especially if the victim doesnt really want the charges pressed. He had to enter a plea deal, which is what would be the likely outcome for most people given the same circumstances. And I think the point is, its not right to hit another human, but before we put them in jail and throw away the key we should really make sure they are a BAD person, not just someone who was in an unfortunate position and made a terrible mistake. I was once hit head on by a driver with no insurance, who totaled my car. I went to his court appearance. They said they were going to drop the charges because he had no prior record. I asked them how anyone could possibly get a prior record if that was the policy. They just looked at me. As for domestic abuse, I mentioned earlier I have a friend whose daughter was a victim. She went back with him. At his hearing she said she didn't remember him hitting her, so everything got dropped, like it never happened. Rice is a bad person. He not only punched her, he knocked her out, and then, apparently not realizing his mistake, dragged her around by the hair. Did he commit a crime or not? I don't care if people like him.
  2. QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Sep 9, 2014 -> 02:49 PM) I don't buy this at all. About 5 years ago I decked a guy in a bar who was being a dick and messing with friends of mine. I was drunk, I got pissed off, and I acted, unfortunately in that way. Before that, I had never hit another person in my life. I'm one of the least confrontational people you'll ever meet. I snapped. Rice, while drunk, could have just snapped too. Could have, but more likely there has been previous incidents. Maybe not as bad as this, but going after a guy in a bar is far different than going after a woman, not to mention one you supposedly love and are about to marry.
  3. QUOTE (Soxbadger @ Sep 9, 2014 -> 02:41 PM) Exactly my point. Either you believe in protecting rights or you dont. I dont just get to say "Well I really hate X so they dont deserve a trial, they should just be executed." You may not believe it, but the time where we need to be most vigilant about protecting our beliefs, is when it is the most heinous of criminals. I don't know why you need a trial to determine what happened. Everyone knows in our system, whether you are guilty or not is largely determined by what kind of representation you have. I saw a video of Ray Rice punching his fiance in the face and knocking her out. I also saw another video of him dragging her out of the same elevator by her hair. Call me crazy or unAmerican, or whatever, if I was on a jury, the video trumps whatever BS his lawyers could possibly come up with. He's as guilty as can be, and really should be spending time in prison.
  4. QUOTE (iamshack @ Sep 9, 2014 -> 02:18 PM) They were not married yet. That is the whole point I am making. But I certainly concede he may have somehow convinced her to marry him despite continuing trauma. And if that is the case, then she's not going to tell the truth, whether he is in the room or not. That's all I am trying to get across. I don't think it really mattered whether he was in the room or not either. I'm sure they had their story straight before the meeting. No clear thinking woman is going to marry a guy who did that to her one month later. Again, everyone show their wives the video and ask them if they would have married you one month later if that was a one time unfortunate mistake. There is obviously something up, and to think this was the first time he whacked her is just like thinking when guys get busted for steroids, it was a one time thing. There is a chance it was, but we all know it's pretty slim. I don't know why some feel it is their duty to try to acquit Ray Rice. It's pretty apparent a heinus crime was committed. 2 games was ridiculous, there was outrage about that. Sure, it's funny this comes out and the NFL supposedly never saw it before. Sure it seems weird the punishment has changed. But regardless, at least now the NFL punishment is appropriate.
  5. QUOTE (Soxbadger @ Sep 9, 2014 -> 02:15 PM) You have no evidence of what happened or why she said that. The definition of abuser doesnt matter, what matters is the fact that people seem to always believe that they know best for everyone else. Last I checked Rice and Turner were adults. At this point Rice does not seem to be a current threat to her life. If she wants to forgive him for what he did, thats her choice. Just like if someone forgives a spouse for cheating, etc. Their life, not mine. (edit) Does anyone have a shred of evidence of prior abuse by Rice? Cause in my experience usually there are more signs than just 1 sudden outburst in public. I wonder if she were your sister or daughter or friend if you would feel the same way.
  6. QUOTE (iamshack @ Sep 9, 2014 -> 09:58 AM) This is not a case of a married couple headed for divorce at the time of the interview/hearing...this is not the case of a couple on the outs...this is a couple that was just married...if there is still not enough trust between the two of them for her to accurately recount the events, without fear of retribution, than her testimony is not credible in the first place. Psychological Effects One hallmark of an abusive partner is that he convinces the woman she is worthless or undesirable and that no one else would ever want her. The abuser often convinces the woman that the abuse is her fault, claiming that her behavior caused the abuser to react violently. Many abused women also feel ashamed of their situation. They fear the social stigma of the “battered wife” image and try to maintain a façade of normalcy, even if this means staying with the abuser.
  7. QUOTE (HickoryHuskers @ Sep 9, 2014 -> 12:30 PM) Well, the players' union could stop them from doing this, but they apparently aren't willing to risk the PR damage it would do. Besides, no team is going to sign him anyway.
  8. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Sep 9, 2014 -> 12:56 AM) http://www.csnchicago.com/white-sox/white-...&ocid=yahoo It's obvious that Ventura's not throwing the sabre/advanced stats world anything to show that he's familiar with their orthodoxy...this is "old school" boilerplate baseball lexicon if ever there was. I know you like to hop on a bandwagon when ripping people and are hoping this thread turns into a Ventura doesn't understand saber stuff bashing, but one thing you failed to mention was Hahn, the darling the saber crowd, said the exact same thing in the link.
  9. QUOTE (Soxfest @ Sep 8, 2014 -> 09:32 PM) Oak 4-3 bullpen woes again. A good defensive LF makes that catch, and a decent defensive 1b makes the play on the bunt, not that they would have bunted had a runner not been in 3B.
  10. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Sep 8, 2014 -> 09:00 PM) He still looks like he is in awe of the majors. Like he doesn't think he deserves to be here yet. I am no Wilkins fan, but I agree. He has had some pitches to hit, but I don't think it is a lack of talent that has him off. Eduardo Perez was tslking the other night , and he said the easiest time to hit as a major leaguer is your first couple of weeks because they don't have scouting reports on you. But I think you can throw that out the window for some who are understandably overwhelmed. Semien, Sanchez and Wilkins have combined for 1 walk in 94 AB since being recalled.
  11. Dunn got a louder ovation than he did when he was with the team. People are really happy he is playing for the other team.
  12. QUOTE (Brian @ Sep 8, 2014 -> 05:37 PM) Guy who's my source points out that all these kids like Jahlil. Cliff, and Jalen are close and cites the way Illinois fans treated Cliff after he chose Kansas as a reason kids won't go to Illinois, including Brunson. I wish Illinois would lose every game they played, but I am not buying this. Illini fans are no different than any other school in regards to holding grudges against guys who stiffed their school. Although I do think they were a little oversensitive to the fake out in picking a hat. First off, it is a 17 year old kid, and secondly, the fake has been going on for years. The one and done guys choose from about 5 one and done schools.if Groce ever lands one of these guys and it all works out and the guy is a top pick after one year, he could be a part of that club. Until then, He will always be the underdog recruiting these types, but you have to give him credit for giving it a run. Many wouldn't bother.
  13. Hahn really danced around a question asking about Viciedo's 2015 status.
  14. QUOTE (StRoostifer @ Sep 8, 2014 -> 02:57 PM) You are correct. I remember reading a few articles before the BMac/Danks trade that the Sox tried to get BMac to change his arm slot because the Sox didn't like his straight over the top delivery. They said it is a very unnatural motion for the shoulder. The Sox were not happy with Brandon refusing to change the arm slot, so we all know what happened next. The Sox tried signing him2 years ago.
  15. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Sep 8, 2014 -> 06:40 PM) Not to mention there are two massive distinctions that are being ignored to make light of this situation. The finance can do whatever the heck that she wants. If she wants to be with Rice, there is nothing that can stop her from doing so, well unless Rice actually succeeds in killing her one day, but that is a different story. The other thing is how the NFL as an employer handles the situation. One does not effect the other. How the NFL views the behavior of its employee, doesn't equate to how Rice's finance views him. The NFL is fully within its right to terminate its employees employment situation because of how its employee acted, whether the victim likes it or not. You want to really protect a victim? Do everything you can to make an abuser think twice about beating on his significant other. If even one abuser stops and thinks that he could lose his job and millions of dollars if he throws a punch, this media storm has been a success. Hell even if one average Joe has the same second thoughts, this has been a success. I agree with this, although I don't think the indefinite NFL suspension is relevant. TMZ gave Rice a lifetime suspension releasing this video. No NFL team will ever touch him IMO.
  16. QUOTE (iamshack @ Sep 8, 2014 -> 05:26 PM) No one is saying it is simple. And no offense, but your friend's daughter has some other things going on besides just an evil boyfriend if she continues to date him. We can't question every decision a woman makes or action she takes because she was hit by the man she was with. I know I'll get some grief for this, but I feel it needs to be said: Some men and women that think they love eachother (and who am I to say if they truly do or not) treat each other very strangely. They fight, they say terrible things to one another, they physically abuse one another. Human behavior is sometimes very strange. Rightfully so, people become outraged when men are filling the role of abuser. However, there is much less outrage when women are the abusers. Disproportionately so. And does anyone even care when gay couples fight? When society as a whole starts trying to get in the middle of some of these strange relationships, it seems to backfire. Oftentimes, it doesn't seem to be for the benefit of anyone actually involved. I'm all for protecting women in danger, and I am all for protecting men in danger. But sometimes, these people don't want protection, they don't want outside involvement, and if that is truly the case, than so be it. Continue at your own peril, for all I care. I would agree she probably has some other things going on if she is still with him, but isn't that also true with Rice's now wife? I don't know if you are married or anyone else here, but if we all show this video to our wives and ask them if we did this to them, would they marry us a month or so later, I guessing 0% say yes. If Rice would have knocked me out in the elevator, he is probably doing time, and missing a lot of football and also paying me a lot of money.Maybe the punishment seems like they are trying to correct a wrong and went overboard, and it probably is. But he still is getting what he deserves.
  17. QUOTE (iamshack @ Sep 8, 2014 -> 05:06 PM) Understood. So I suppose we shouldn't let them get married either, because he may have been forcing her against her will. I sure hope you don't ever have a friend or a sister or daughter who is in an abusive relationship and refuses to get out. A close friend of mine has a daughter in one he beat the crap out of her and threw her out in below zero temps last winter. She had frostbite and a couple of fractures and she is back with him. At his trial she said she didn't remember him ever hitting her. My friend has one option it seems and that is one that would spend the rest of his life locked up. It isn't as simple as you make it.
  18. QUOTE (iamshack @ Sep 8, 2014 -> 04:44 PM) He is such a blowhard I keep hearing people making this point...do people just disregard the fact that she MARRIED the guy after this incident? Did he force her to do THAT too, under threats of another beating? Come on... It is not uncommon for women in abusive relationships to continue those relationships.
  19. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Sep 8, 2014 -> 03:20 PM) Just because the NFL hasn't had a backbone up until now, doesn't mean this was an overreaction. That is a gigantic characterization of where the burden of decency should lie. I will repeat again, the loss of one's job because you punch someone in the face and knock them out is fully justified. This is nothing more than exactly that. There is no question it is all PR. If they saw the video and knew it would never become public, I really doubt Rice's punishment is altered. Whether that is now considered "fair" or consistent with previous punishment or with the current guidlines, I don't personally care. I think Rice got what he deserved in the first place.
  20. QUOTE (Soxbadger @ Sep 8, 2014 -> 03:19 PM) Eh I disagree. Many huge corporations dont give a f*** how slimy the guys are, as long as they bring in money. I mean they dont fire guys for not paying child support, for raping, for whatever, so not really sure why this is any different. Well besides for the fact that everyone just decided this was the fauxrage of the week. So if an employee is charged with rape and gets sent to prison, many corporations keep him on the payroll? LOL.
  21. QUOTE (Soxbadger @ Sep 8, 2014 -> 03:15 PM) Yeah justice served. His wife (the victim) now doesnt get the benefit of his huge contract that was just terminated. SWEET SWEET JUSTICE. LOL He's made plenty. Now she can stop the phoniness of being on his side to collect his check, divorce him, take half, and move on to a healthier and happier situation.
  22. QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Sep 8, 2014 -> 01:29 PM) Wow, what an overreaction. But I don't feel bad for the guy. They have to pay out the remainder of his contract right? Just take a cap hit. He gets nothing. He was dragging her by the hair after knocking her out, what did they think happened in the elevator? But props to TMZ for getting justice served. Maybe it is too much. People have done worse with lesser punishment. But once people actually see the punch, there is no way Rice can play for another team again. The Ravens should have cut him long ago. The NFL should have suspended him longer, but maybe zero tolerance will make some of these idiots think twice before doing something that vile. As they say, playing professional sports for millions is a priveledge, not a right.
  23. QUOTE (bmags @ Sep 8, 2014 -> 10:13 AM) Well if the bulls are said to be interested, that sounds like a pretty good signal he'll sign elsewhere. Or that he has about zero left and will probably spend at least 50 games this season on the bench injured.
  24. QUOTE (Buehrle>Wood @ Sep 8, 2014 -> 09:40 AM) It wasn't too bad. I'm sure he could have gotten away with some half - assed apology letter. I think he just wants to cash in now. Yeah, he saw that $2 billion price tag on the Clippers. Wasn't his letter a year or two old anyway?
