NBA Thread 2013-2014
QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Jan 16, 2014 -> 08:03 AM) Who the f*** ever said MJ would be ruined today? lol. All I, Kyyle, or anybvody else that doesn't still wear Air Jordan's or sing the "be like mike" song in the shower has said is that most of the s*** that was kept secret/hidden from the public or came out WAYYYYYYY after the fact would not be possible today and that the way we view/see him overall would be different. That is exactly what Kyle was saying. He said MJ would be villianized for cheating on his wife like Tiger Woods. That is what this entire argument is about. So everything is out there now about MJ, yet for a guy who hasn't played for 10 years, he's still raking in the cash. From 2010, 12 years after his heyday: http://www.forbes.com/lists/2010/53/celeb-...ordan_UGGU.html Yeah, knowing Mike cheated on his wife and was rough on teammates and mean to Jerry Krause really made him less popular. GMAB. He still makes $80 million a year in endorsements.

QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Jan 16, 2014 -> 07:22 AM) That's Bieber today. And with social media, youtube, etc, he's more popular than MJ or just about anyone ever. So you just ruined your case. If he is more popular, how has the social media ruined him like you claim it would MJ? This guy is way more scandalous than MJ ever was, and MJ was smart enough to keep most of his discressions, discreet. It is funny the argument is MJ would be exposed for all these things he WAS exposed for back in the day. And it didn't matter. MJ is the king. Get over it. The greatest of all time.

Rosenthal: Tanaka to Yankees
QUOTE (midway @ Jan 15, 2014 -> 03:26 PM) I'd love to see Tanaka with the White Sox, but his wife is an actress and wants to be where she can pursue her acting career... seems like LA or New York would be the place to be for that. Didn't they say last week his family doesn't speak english? I don't know if they film many Japanese movies or television shows in LA or NY.

QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Jan 15, 2014 -> 03:25 PM) How many were proven? Was this expose' written in the middle of his career, or was it over? Did Magic Johnson still have AIDs? Try putting it into context, if you can. FWIW, Magic never had AIDS.

QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Jan 15, 2014 -> 03:15 PM) Well, it did expose and destroy Tigers image. So, mmk And the National Equirer had stories of MJ cheating as well here is one from 2002. How many sponsors fled MJ? http://www.nationalenquirer.com/celebrity/...tress-tells-all

QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Jan 15, 2014 -> 02:14 PM) Interesting stat for Russell Wilson: via So the less he throws the better he is. Just like Rex Grossman. I'm just kidding. I think Wilson is really good. I admit, I think put in the same circumstance Luck is better, but I don't see how anyone could say Wilson hasn't been outstanding.

QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Jan 15, 2014 -> 02:55 PM) You do realize that the reason she came after him is because the proof of his lengthy list of girls was given to her, right? It wasnt just because enquirer put up a story, its because Enquirer put up a story and then backed it up. Damn, I got sucked into the DA vortex of dumb arguments. MY BAD NBA FANS, IM DONE You bring up the National Equirer as proof MJ would be villified for cheating in today's world as opposed to 1987, and have the nerve to say I have a vortex of dumb arguments? LMAO.

NBA Thread 2013-2014
QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Jan 15, 2014 -> 02:47 PM) Really? Was twitter and TMZ there as well? I was young then, I must not remember things There are plenty of Michael Jordan cheating on his wife articles in past issues of the National Enquirer. I don't think anyone actually takes that magazine seriously. Again, if Tiger doesn't require an ambulance, maybe he gets divorced, but that got all the skeletons out of the wall looking for some free money. A story about Tiger cheating in the National Equirer isn't going to spark sponsors pulling their sponsorships. And the fact that at the time, Tiger had 2 infant children, the timing couldn't have been worse. If he has no kids or they are a bit older, the Tiger backlash is probably nowhere near as strong.

NBA Thread 2013-2014
QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Jan 15, 2014 -> 02:42 PM) So what you are saying is, when MJ does something, anything, it is newsworthy? Just so you know, this is from tigers Wiki Soooooo the affair with Uchitel was exposed, Tigers wife found out exactly how bad it was, tried to beat his ass, and then he hit a tree. He was busted BEFORE he hit the tree. By the media By the National Enquirer, which BTW, you might be surprised to learn was in publication all throughout MJ's heyday.

NBA Thread 2013-2014
QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Jan 15, 2014 -> 02:32 PM) MJ is not everyone else. You understand that. And Magic was not slightly tarred and feathered, that was a huge story, that was all over every major newspaper and newscast for months. Hell, it was even a big part of the 30 for 30 movie about the first dream team. Tiger more than caught a lot of flak, he lost millions in endorsements, respect, his marraige, money in his divorce. It completely destroyed the squeaky clean winning machine image that Tiger and his handlers had painstakingly crafted. Nobody cares to really go back and expose MJ right now because it just isnt relevant. He was the greatest of his time, that time is past. It is old news. He is an owner of an NBA team and still considered the best of all time. It was a story his new wife is pregnant with twins, it would still be at least some story if he is out on the town fooling around. There was a big story last year of a woman who claimed MJ was the father of her love child. He is still relevant. There were plenty of stories of Michael not exactly being his image in the Jordan Rules, yet that did nothing. Today, not all cheating gets reported, and Tiger would never had the backlash if he didn't back into a tree and an ambulance was called. The problem was, all of Tiger's women wanted a payday. It wasn't because of social media he was exposed. He had been cheating for years before he was busted. Edit, the Jordan Rules came out in 1992. In it, it said Jordan was mean to teammates, punched Will Perdue, tried to make Cartwright look bad....What damage did that do to his image?

NBA Thread 2013-2014
QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Jan 15, 2014 -> 02:21 PM) I dont know that, IF HE WAS CAUGHT HIS IMAGE WOULD BE TARNISHED. You are the one insisting he would not be tarnished because Magic Johnson has AIDs But your argument is the media knew all these stories about MJ but kept them quiet. Why would that be different now? I pointed out Magic because he cheated worse than anyone, and was only tarred and feathered slightly because of the ignorance of the HIV virus. If people were aware they couldn't catch it touching him, nothing would have happened. Athletes, celebrities are still cheating like crazy. Tiger caught a lot of flak, but just about everyone else it's considered par for the course.

NBA Thread 2013-2014
QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Jan 15, 2014 -> 02:17 PM) The question isnt "do you believe guys arent cheating" The question is "Do you think MJ's image would be tarnished because of social media catching him cheating and exposed him" The first question doesnt matter, it is irrelevant. The second question I answer with a resounding yes What is the backlash on DWade having a baby on the way while getting engaged when it was proven the couple wasn't "on a break" like they claimed? There were plenty of stories of MJ's infidelity during his playing days. Nothing was going to stop that PR machine.

NBA Thread 2013-2014
QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Jan 15, 2014 -> 02:14 PM) She came after him with an 8 iron because she knew the story was about to break and she was going to be embarrassed Tiger wrecked his car and an ambulance was called as he was fleeing. That is how this all got out. Then all his women turned on him. You guys must really think guys are cheating less these days. That's laughable.

NBA Thread 2013-2014
QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Jan 15, 2014 -> 02:07 PM) How did Tiger Woods infidelity kill his likeability? And Magics HIV briefly alienated him from the NBA, nobody wanted to come near the guy. He is nowhere near as prominent as he used to be. He pops up in Hanes commercials and every once in a while he is seen out with his wife. HE was a serious player back in the day, the press knew about it but didnt want to lose quotes so they just didnt say anything about it. They were afraid he would infect him. It wasn't because he was cheating on his wife. And Magic came clean about all his conquests. Do you seriously believe guys these days aren't cheating at all because of social media?

NBA Thread 2013-2014
QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Jan 15, 2014 -> 02:07 PM) apparently you missed the whole tiger woods thing. Wasn't that "after the fact"? And the only reason that ever came out was because Tiger wrecked his car trying to get away from his wife's 8 iron.

NBA Thread 2013-2014
QUOTE (Soxbadger @ Jan 15, 2014 -> 01:24 PM) As a kid I really cant remember them saying that much about MJ. Just that he gambled sometimes, I dont remember it being like TMZ or yahoo news with every day celebrity news bombarding me. There still was plenty of gossip. The punching Kerr's face is on here as an example. Well, the reason it can be used as an example is because it was out there. Obviously it's a fishbowl existence for everyone now, but back then, I don't think it was any less a fishbowl existence for guys like MJ. MJ is still prominent now. Do you really think he's changed his ways much?

I don't think you need Twitter or Facebook or a camera phone or the internets to realize Michael was gettting a little at every port. How much did Magic's HIV diagnosis kill his likeability?

QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Jan 15, 2014 -> 01:10 PM) his gambling and infidelity would be huge stories. TMZ would have people waiting around every corner for him I don't think infidelity would have been that big of an issue. Most professional athletes are doing the same thing.

NBA Thread 2013-2014
QUOTE (pettie4sox @ Jan 15, 2014 -> 12:55 PM) Maybe Lebron should end his theatrics and stop being a clown if he wants people to take him seriously. He really embraced that heel role a few years back. He's getting better but still a very unlikable guy. (Great player though) He admitted "The Decision" deal was just plain wrong. LeBron seems as likeable, if not more, as any of the great players close to his stature in pro sports.

Official 2013-2014 College Hoops Thread
QUOTE (RockRaines @ Jan 15, 2014 -> 12:36 PM) And it's also funny saying teams are overrated when they lose in conference. News flash, nobody is getting through the Big Ten undefeated. And on the road in the Big Ten, almost every game, the road team probably has a legit beef about how the game was called. If you win road games against the top half of the conference, it's gravy.

Official 2013-2014 College Hoops Thread
There used to be more of rushing the floor and the field, even in the pros, just look at the video of the Sox clinching the 1983 West, than there is today. I wouldn't do it, but I don't think college kids rush the floor or the field because they are surpised they won. They rush it because they are celebrating a big win. I don't see why it bothers anyone who is watching on television. If you got rushed and knocked down at the event, I could see an argument.

Axe is back
Axe seems like a decent guy and frankly a guy with his ability making it to the major leagues seems to indicate he knows a little bit about pitching. I also defended him last year when he was pitching pretty well and people were up in arms Santiago wasn't getting his starts. The clock, however, has struck midnight on his major league career and he's back to being a pumpkin. Maybe in AAA, like Balta mentioned, he can help guys become better, and maybe he has a career as a pitching coach in his future. Just hope the Sox don't need him to pitch for them ever again unless you have seats in the OF and need a souvenier.

QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Jan 15, 2014 -> 09:54 AM) He's John Ely. Didn't Phil Rogers constantly cry about the Sox letting Ely get away? Then he just stopped.

Axe is back
QUOTE (bmags @ Jan 15, 2014 -> 09:38 AM) Well at least with Axe you know what you are gonna get. You could win the game with a good offensive night, or he might surprise you with a gem. That's better than thinking a guy will respond well to the show and then gives up 15 runs (Arnie Munoz) He surprised us with gems in May. Then June and familiarity came. He had a good start vs. Seattle, but that isn't very unique, and then the roof caved in. In his last 58 1/3 innings, he gave up 102 hits 52 ER, 22 BB, 32 K and 17 HR. No one was too upset when the Sox didn't offer him a contract. Now he becomes "depth".
