  1. QUOTE (Jillian Michaels' Abs @ Jul 29, 2013 -> 02:33 PM) 2013 and 2014 will likely have the same outcome as 2009, 2010, 2011 and 2012. The White Sox are stuck with Alex Rios, whether the Sox and Sox fans like it or not. What value does he have on the trade market? Sure, he isn't a defensive liability, he runs well and can steal bases, he hits for a decent average and can hit a homer every once in a while. But - he doesnt do anything exceedingly well, has a perceived lax attitude and makes a lot of money this season AND next. There are plenty of fringy replacement-level guys that can be had. Ales Rios isnt a difference-maker and at his salary and the Sox reported trade demands, he needs to be. But, he isn't. We're stuck with him. That's what I don't get posters thinking teams would like to have him. Right now, offensively he is 13th in baseball as a RF. Average. Since June 1 he has a .665 OPS. That is what Paul Konerko has put up this year. Plus with perceived motivational issues, why would anyone pick up that contract, let alone give you anything of significance for that opportunity?
  2. QUOTE (whitesox901 @ Jul 29, 2013 -> 02:27 PM) Why didn't they just replace the Cubs guy with the Gonzo's Sox replacement? You would have to ask them, but probably because they want their senior person on the team more people are interested in.
  3. Confirmed he's going to the Cubs. http://www.chicagonow.com/chicago-sports-m...-white-sox-834/
  4. QUOTE (TaylorStSox @ Jul 29, 2013 -> 01:56 PM) I have no problem holding onto Rios. The best case scenario in a trade is that you get somebody as good as Rios In a few years anyway. Rios basically playing for a contract next year isn't a bad consolation prize.
  5. If you have 4 righties in your rotation, no one thinks twice. Why is it different for 4 lefties?
  6. Peavy gets traded and someone posts no other organization would have received less for him. Crain goes. Lindstrom goes, maybe with Crain or Peavy or maybe in August, but by Sep. 1 he isn't on the White Sox. Ramirez, Rios, Dunn all stay.
  7. Reading the Tribune article, if he choked on a bratwurst during the next homestand, the executors would take over control. I have no idea how many executors he has but I would be surprised if his son who is president of the Bulls isn't the executor or one of them. From the Tribune article, the investors really cannot force or block a sale, JR has all the power. It also is interesting that when board members die or sell their interests, they are not replaced. His son said "it would depend on the day" when asked his thoughts about selling. I think he takes over. The piece did mention that a couple of investors said JR owned about 14% of the team now. JR said that was severly understated and that no investor knows how much he has except him. JR wanted them to keep the Bulls and I would assume because profits are pretty much built in. It's a little tougher in baseball, but if you had the passion and were one of his kids, I think it would be hard not to at least try to run them for a while.
  8. If the return for Downs is any indication, a Cory Rasmus-type is probably what the Sox are looking at. Certainly not a franchise-changing moment. The thing is, it should be a no brainer for a team to give up that type of player risking Crain will be healthy reasonably soon.
  9. QUOTE (Buehrle>Wood @ Jul 29, 2013 -> 12:18 PM) Someone mentioned Tim Beckham earlier. I think he's probably more that TB would give up, although TB probably wants to keep Crain away from Oakland, Boston, Detroit, a team that may claim him in August when and if he is healthy.
  10. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jul 29, 2013 -> 12:17 PM) Joe's info all came from the Guillen family. Yeah, he was the Guillen family clubbie.
  11. QUOTE (HickoryHuskers @ Jul 29, 2013 -> 12:15 PM) I would hope for that too, but I don't think teams are going to give that up for Crain. Maybe someone with a 98% chance of bust. Another team's Jared Mitchell.
  12. QUOTE (RockRaines @ Jul 29, 2013 -> 12:10 PM) Prepare to be underwhelmed by the return for Crain. Anyone who actually thought the Sox were getting anything can't miss even if he wasn't on the DL hasn't been paying attention, but something is better than nothing.
  13. QUOTE (kwill @ Jul 29, 2013 -> 11:49 AM) Does anyone think we should hang onto Crain? I am actually not opposed to hanging onto him and trying to get an extension done. He has been one of the only guys to actually live up to his contract in a sox uniform. My thought is this, you should not trade him for a marginal prospect. I agree to trading him only if you actually get something that has value and not just a lottery pick. If you cant, see if you can get a deal done with him going forward. Look, if you are not going to do a complete rebuild with Sale then you are trying to compete next year or 2015. Reed,Jones and Crain are three tremendous assets to do that. The rotation figures to be pretty solid. It's our position players who are just awful. I am not saying don't trade him. I am saying just make sure you actually get value instead of trading him for the heck of it. The White Sox do that far to often. (Simon Castro)... He is most likely going to be extremely expensive and almost certainly not as good the next couple of years. The Sox need to move him. When he's a free agent, they can always re-visit and see if his price tag makes any sense.
  14. QUOTE (southside hitman @ Jul 29, 2013 -> 10:20 AM) I would say have every indication you are planning on starting him, but ask for team's final and best offers Tuesday morning. If not what you have looking for, have him pitch and be done with it. If someone blows you away Wednesday before the deadline so be it. Sox could always trade him this winter to a team that doesn't want to part with the king's ransom that Price will demand. Actions speak louder than words. A week or so ago, Peavy not being a rental was one reason being pointed out he was more highly thought of than Garza. Now teams want the Sox to throw in money yada, yada...those are just words, negotiating tactics. Actually putting Peavy on the mound tomorrow if no team has stepped up enough is a clear indication if they want Jake, they better not screw around anymore as the games they are playing already cost them a start, and the White Sox won't settle.
  15. QUOTE (CaliSoxFanViaSWside @ Jul 29, 2013 -> 09:45 AM) You show you're content with keeping him after 7/31 . There's no way you start him tomorrow. The only thing starting him tomorrow would show is the Sox are idiots. I think it would show they are desperate to move him, and if anything, encourage teams not to pay too much. The Sox need to keep the leverage. I think it will all be moot anyway.
  16. QUOTE (GreenSox @ Jul 29, 2013 -> 09:29 AM) The Sox shouldn't start him tomorrow. It doesn't matter to us if we trade him Tue or Wed. By starting him, his value is decreased as teams will get 1 less start out of him (or 4/5 less of a start). He's had sufficient post-injury auditions. Starting him would also show the Sox would be content keeping him. If teams want to play games, play games right back. His value is decreased for the acquiring team this year by one start but the total package shouldn't change. I think while it won't be the original asking price because you should aim high, Hahn will ultimately get what he originally was willing to trade him for or more by tomorrow afternoon. If not, start him. Why settle?
  17. Since Peavy is scheduled to start tomorrow, teams acquiring him should be motivated to make a deal before then. They could get an extra start out of him this season.
  18. QUOTE (bighurt4life @ Jul 28, 2013 -> 06:17 PM) Does anyone think that he's already been told that the trade has gone down with team X but isn't announced yet and he's just holding his tongue. Is there any precedence for someone to clear out their locker like this in anticipation of a trade? That doesn't make any sense to me, I would guess that the trade has taken place and the league just needs to sign off on it before anything is announced. No, I don't think there is anything more to it than they are hitting the road and won't be back until after the deadline and is very likely to be moved.
  19. QUOTE (Jake @ Jul 28, 2013 -> 06:29 PM) Any objective analysis of Nate Schierholtz would scream "fluke year" and "not good at baseball" Anyhow, this rumor is a dud. Hanson just took a long poop Of course, but that doesn't matter. Give me the guy that is going well this year. There were far better overall releivers than Cliff Politte and Neal Cotts in 2005, but if the Sox traded them for 2 other guys, it would have weakened them. Maybe the Pirates told this guy to go burn a mule for gamesmanship.
  20. QUOTE (Jake @ Jul 28, 2013 -> 06:20 PM) When one projects how the rest of the season will go, we wonder..."what is the likelihood this player continues this performance?" It would seem to be a very good bet that Rios outplays Schierholtz for the rest of the season. Schierholtz is in for a big raise next year in arbitration anyway. We'll kick in some cash There is a reason they scout these gys instead of just looking at their baseball cards.
  21. QUOTE (Jake @ Jul 28, 2013 -> 06:16 PM) Schierholtz career WAR - 6.5 career high prior to this season - 1.3 this season - 2.1 Rios career WAR - 25.4 career high - 5.5 this season - 2.0 seasons over 2.1 - 6 (seventh in progress) They're not even in the same ballpark The past doesn't matter. It is this season that matters. Shierholtz is hitting better and makes 1/6th the paycheck.
  22. QUOTE (fathom @ Jul 28, 2013 -> 06:13 PM) He is a strict platoon player. When is the last time a platoon player was traded for a top 50 guy? As I said, I don't know if that is even a deal, but it makes a lot more sense than for Rios which everyone thought was happening a week or so ago. I beleive the Pirates really want a LH bat.
  23. QUOTE (Jake @ Jul 28, 2013 -> 06:10 PM) A long, long track record is relevant here The attractiveness of a guy like Schierholtz in the trade market is that you WOULDN'T have to trade a guy like Hanson to get him No its not, its for 2 months, and it isn't like Rios has a stellar track record. I don't know if that is going to be the deal, but it makes a lot more sense than trading him for Rios.
  24. QUOTE (Jake @ Jul 28, 2013 -> 06:02 PM) Christ, Schierholtz is not a good baseball player. Paying a lot for a league average bat, at best He has an .876 ops. More homers, better batting average and better on base percentage than Rios and makes $10 million a year less.
  25. QUOTE (flavum @ Jul 28, 2013 -> 05:28 PM) Sox 16-38 the last 54 games. That's two months of playing .296 baseball. But Ventura is doing a fine job. Yes, every manager should be judged on his win loss.
