Marlins trade Buehrle, Josh Johnson, Reyes plus others to Blue Jays

QUOTE (Tex @ Nov 20, 2012 -> 08:48 AM) As someone who relocated with young kids I do have empathy for athletes who are force to live in areas they might not have selected on their own. It is tough on the kids and the rest of the family. Plus, having to get accustomed to a different country. No amount of money reallly helps the kids getting use to a new school, new friends, and all that. They can always pick a different profession. Buehrle isn't going to re-locate his family to Toronto. If his kids are old enough for school, I'm sure they will be attending in Missouri. The majority of the baseball season falls outside of the school year, and he's only "home" half the time anyway. It is a pain I'm sure, but not nearly as difficult as moving a family permanently. It's really no different than him being in Chicago or Miami. Those weren't permanent residences either. Up until now, Buerhle has made $90 million. If it were that much of an issue, he could always walk away and lead a rather comfortable life. -
QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Nov 19, 2012 -> 03:20 PM) Led the AL in WAR in 1994 (7.3), 75.4 batting runs created. Depends whose WAR you are looking at. The Baseball Reference has his WAR 3rd behind Lofton and Griffey, and Frank's offensive season if you pro rate it out, is better than Cabrera's 2012 and it's really not close.

I'm pretty sure if the MVP were voted based entirely on sabermetrics, Frank Thomas would have won zero MVPs.

I doubt Buehrle wants anyone to feel sorry for him. JR told him to take the money and he did. Good for the Buehrles IMO. -
Cabrera hit 17 homers 7th inning or later. He also had a .720 slugging pct. with 2 outs and RISP. As Hawk says, don't tell me what you hit, tell me when you hit it. This guy came up big in key situations. Trout had a great year and most of the time would win an MVP for the season he had, and was deserving this year. I can't stand the guy, but Cabrera's win is more than justified.

I'm sure this doesn't mean anything because wins and losses apparently are an overrated stat, but the Sox won a higher percentage of their games when AJP caught vs. games Flowers caught.

QUOTE (2nd_city_saint787 @ Nov 18, 2012 -> 11:43 AM) 2 Top 100 guys and Adeiny Hechavarria is a pretty good prospect himself, finishing 2011 in AAA with a .389/.431/.537 in 25 games then following that up .312/.363/.424 all while being rated the best defensive SS in the Eastern League in '11 and PCL '12. Add in those 3 guys with Yunel Escobar who has a very valuable contract and they got a pretty good deal for the future. I thin it is a safe bet not one of those guys will ever be as good as Jose Reyes. It is a good trade if you are rebuilding and have to free up,some money, but that is not what it was. It was a trade to free up some money for Loria to put in his own bank account. He probably has lost any chance for fans now. I would think with Reyes, Stanton, Bonafacio, maybe Logan Morrision comes back, Johaon, Buehrle, Nolasco, you had a team with a couple of pieces that could easily be considered a playoff contender. Pulling the plug shows they have no commitment. The park is built, lease is signed, Miami got played. I can understand how Selig cannot reject the trade, but for him not to put pressure on Loria to get out would be sad. I hope this is the end of public money going into ballparks. The guy has a $20 million payroll now. BTW, Escobar is a cancer. They couldn't wait to get rid of him in Atlanta, they couldn't wait to get rid of him in Toronto, and it will be the same any other place he goes. -

QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Nov 17, 2012 -> 05:43 PM) From a strictly baseball standpoint, it definitely sets them up way better for the future. The problem is that all the other stuff overshadows the baseball side of it. How does it set them up way better in the future? The fallout alone from this trade is going to cost them. Stanton will leave because there is no way he is going to sign with them. If these players pan out and they want to supplement them down the road with a major free agent, good luck with that. It's not like these prospects are can't miss. I think 1 is a top 100. If the goal is medicrity and yearly profits, then yes, it has set them up way better in the future. I just think if you get that much in public funds to enhance your private business, you owe the community a lot more than what Loria is doing. MLB should be horrified by this, and Bud should tell Loria it's time he left. -

QUOTE (PlaySumFnJurny @ Nov 16, 2012 -> 09:45 AM) I know Barbie once said, "Math is hard," but . . . 2012 "Kids Day" Sunday bleacher cost 7/8/12 (me and 2 kids) $38 + $1 + $1 = $ 40 2013 Family Sunday bleacher cost (me and 2 kids) $15 + $15 + $15 = $45 $40 If you drive or bring your wife, it is cheaper, or if you have family that doesn't qualify for the $1 kids ticket, its cheaper.

First big move of the offseason prediction contest

New GMs like to make big splashes relatively soon after taking over. Schueler traded for Tim Raines, KW went after David Wells. I suspect Hahn would like to make a blockbuster this winter. -
How much are you willing to offer Josh Hamilton?

QUOTE (2nd_city_saint787 @ Nov 15, 2012 -> 03:12 PM) There's still been no truth to him asking for coke...just read an article on ESPN that said he's still being drug tested 3 times a week. Yes it CAN happen if he continues drinking heavily, so no he's not out of the woods, but the fact remains it hasn't in 6 or 7 years. If he never walked into that specific tattoo parlor and made friends with those drug addicts there is no guarantee what so ever that "He would have been a drug addict no matter what". Once again, his book is not blaming these guys, his book is telling the series of events that lead to it. I'm the one saying if he never walked into that tattoo parlor we wouldnt be having this conversation. On his wiki page they mention him looking for blow. Last year he just got blown in the bathroom of the bar supposedly. The guy will always be a huge risk. -

QUOTE (2nd_city_saint787 @ Nov 15, 2012 -> 02:24 PM) I think if it were to happen it would have already...its been 6 or 7 years since he failed a drug test. The guy was only 20 years old experiencing extended time away from his family for the first time. Go check out the photos from his 2009 escapade and then read the accounts of what happened when he had what he said was 4 cocktails last year. He's far from out of the woods. -
how would YOU fix the sox attendance woes?

QUOTE (champs2005 @ Nov 15, 2012 -> 10:55 AM) Of course traffic was a top issue in the survey. My point is that in Chicago traffic is a factor for al major sports, big events, etc. Traffic is a given. It doesnt seem to be affecting the attendance at all the other places. And you cant really DO anything about traffic as an owner. It is a cheap excuse. I hate Jerry. I would venture to guess if the Bulls or Hawks had to draw 30,000 to 35,000 a night for attendance to be considered sufficient, you would hear the same reasons when they most likely, except when MJordan was around, would fail. The excuse is legit. Especially for baseball when, if you have season tickets, its every day for spurts. The Cubs are different. They have Wrigleyville. -

QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Nov 15, 2012 -> 10:05 AM) Good point, I didn't look at the grand scheme of things. I guess I just don't see all the people who complained about prices, running out to go to way more Sox games in 2013. Unless the team is spectacular, there won't be a huge jump next year IMO, but it should stop the trend of declining attendance. -

QUOTE (SoxnGiants @ Nov 14, 2012 -> 10:17 PM) The link seems to show him in 6th place - behind Rodney. Someone (from Texas) actually gave Rodney a 1st place vote... Rodney had one of the most, if not the most, dominant seasons a closer has ever had. I think 1 first place vote is justified. -
Sometimes these types turn into gold for a season.

QUOTE (2nd_city_saint787 @ Nov 14, 2012 -> 01:50 PM) I agree with this. It's probably not the right way to do it but it worked. They got the 2nd, 5th, and 7th ranked prospect from the best farm system in the league(2 top 100 prospects). All for guys who won't be around the next time that team is successful. Thats a pretty good start to developing a good farm system. The funny thing is, these prospects won't be around the next time the team is successful if they are any good. -

QUOTE (ewokpelts @ Nov 14, 2012 -> 09:03 AM) the marlins were not making a lot of money in Joe Robbe Stadium. The bulk of the Marlins game revenue went towards the Dolphins. They made almost nothing in the 03 WS run. Going to the new stadium, they keep virtually all revenues from parking, concessions, and suites. So even though they have a s*** lineup, they are making a ton of profit NOW. Wrong. With revenue sharing, they were one of the most profitable teams in baseball. I read one article that said they would have made $20 million if they locked their gates and didn't let anyone in. -
How is Marlins trade different from what the cubs are doing?

QUOTE (2nd_city_saint787 @ Nov 14, 2012 -> 12:42 PM) I don't know what this means, he spent a boatload last year...they didn't work out and Lorias obviously impatient. Im not saying that they WILL but I dont see why not. No one will want to play there. If they won't give a no trade, if you make any money and they don't win, you will go. If somehow you do get a no trade, they will strip the rest of the team if they are not winning, and making a big profit. -

I really think someone has to be naive if they think winning is anywhere close to turning a huge profit as far as importance with Loria. -

I was told you can't get an .800 OPS for less than $15 million a year . Hunter has an .800 OPS. $13 million a year is a steal.
