  1. 0 for 2 with 2 big whiffs. He should change his name to Palka.
  2. Javy has a higher lifetime WAR per game than Buehrle. He was a flaw in the WAR system. When the Sox were good, Javy was bad. When the Sox were bad, Javy was good. Can't put WAR numbers on what is going on in the head.
  3. Yes, he does have a point. Look at what the Sox spend money on. They piss more away per what they spend than anyone.
  4. C'mon. They do take the most money most of the time, but not everything is always. When you are talking 1 or 2 million on 118 million, that's really not much of a differenc. The Cubs never seem to lose anyone because they want to be closer to their in laws.
  5. First off, while the dollar figure may have been slightly more, we don't know if the present day value was more or the tax ramifications, deferred payments, which probably both offers had, or other things. It could just be that he thinks the Phillies are closer to winning but wants to be classy. But OK, assume his fiances family is the legit reason. And I have never said players take the most money always. Ultimately the offers were too similar to blow that off, But if you bet on it, you will win a lot more than you lose. In fact, if you read this thread, one person mentioned geography as an issue where the Sox may have to bump their offer a bit higher. That poster was me. You are taking the $20 million figure someone just threw out there as gospel. I wouldn't blame the White Sox for that. But $10 million over 5 years? Admittedly, that is a bit much too, but the price of business. If it's time to win, let's get the best horses.
  6. All I know is that there was a figure. You are taking this out of context. Ray Ray made up the $20 million figure. I just wrote I doubt it would have been that much, and I think that is very reasonable.
  7. I doubt it would have been that much, but when everyone thought it would have taken $10 million more than what they were comfortable with, most, including you, thought that was a small price to pay. There was a figure where the fiance's family in NJ wouldn't have mattered. It's pretty binary. You either sign the player or you don't. BTW, I know you like to write Dick as much as possible, but grow up. It isn't fooling anyone. In fact, it's a lot of bluster, just like the Phillies.
  8. They didn't do what it took to convert. That's a fail. Unfortunately to convert this one it would have taken a bit more than more money. To think the White Sox didn't know that would be claiming his agent was negligent. Maybe how much more didn't make sense. This may all work out for the best. But still, if you can't convert when you don't offer the most money, and now can't convert when you do, what is there to hang your hat on? Hahn went on and on how the White Sox were now a destination. Reality says, not so much.
  9. I am sure the White Sox weren't blindsided by him picking less money. I am sure there was a level where that wouldn't have been an issue.
  10. I don't know if it's a good thing to leak out that your offer was higher, or bad that the higher offer was blown off.
  11. I did mention earlier location could mean the Sox need to be a bit higher than Philly. I thought he lived in GA, didn't know the NJ angle, but enough money or first class airline tickets could fix that. One thing is for certain, the White Sox are not quite yet the destination RH claimed in his end of the season address.
  12. Again, if the White Sox are searching for bargains in modern day free agency, they won't be plucking players from the top of the list.
  13. Somewhere KW is wearing sunglasses to hide the shock players actually pick more money, and don't find a team where the Chicago Tribune didn't even have a beat writer covering most of the time, THE destination.
  14. Cash is king. 2nd place again. When is the annual participation trophy ceremony? It's $10 million over 5 years. If that hampers their efforts they might as well start trading the Moncadas and Giolitos now.
  15. Do you think the Sox will be willing to go where the Nats went with Corbin?
  16. That's weird. An hour ago you used his tweets as a source to try to prove yourself correct, as proof that the Phillies are in on "everyone" again.
  17. The White Sox have tried landing guys not offering the most money. If you were a player, what is it about Rick Hahn's resume that would make you think there is an excellent chance at sustained winning? The Reds haven't been very good lately either, but unless you are a White Sox fan, there isn't a lot to buy into yet.
  18. That is true. It's about time someone comes out of nowhere and becomes a huge contributor.
  19. Hamels did put up a 2.5 WAR last year missing 4 or 5 starts. It's not really an overpay. It's more than he would have received if the situation was the exact same as the last couple of years, but $18 million for one year isn't that bad.
  20. Anyone could have signed them to a minimum contract. They won't be claimed, and even if they were, who cares?
  21. They definitely will sign someone else to pitch. Since they have basically officially called off the rebuild and are trying to win is going to make them add.
  22. The point you made was that the Phillies were all bluster. You were wrong again.
  23. They went to Harper over Machado. They traded for Segura, and spent $50 million guaranteed on McCutcheon. If he gets the 4th year team option, he's pretty close to the largest contract in White Sox history, and he's totally forgotten. Now they are in on Wheeler. If the Sox signed Harper, do you think they would shopping in the clearance aisle right now. If that's bluster, i'll take it over being stunned a player thought $50 million more guaranteed was a better deal.
