White Sox acquire Joakim Soria, Luis Avilan and $3 Million
Dick Allen replied to Sleepy Harold's topic in Pale Hose Talk
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jan 4, 2018 -> 05:59 PM) As noted before - the only salary the White Sox would really care to shed is Shields, and he's not signed in 2019 so there's no real way the White Sox can send any money back to balance this. That means the only money moving in the deal would be Kemp's deal. The White Sox would basically be taking on $40 million or so in order to get talent from the Dodgers. That's comparable to the price the White Sox paid for Robert, give or take the penalties. In other words, for any version of this to make sense for the White Sox...they better be getting absolute gold back. Not a reclamation project like Joc - or at least not "only Joc", you need a very strong package to make this fair for the White Sox. You want guys who, 14 months ago, would be the top prospect in the White Sox system. Chances of a team taking on Kemps entire contract? Zero. -
White Sox acquire Joakim Soria, Luis Avilan and $3 Million

I hope Joc Pederson is involved. That is a reclamation project I could get behind. -
Brewers Acquire Christian Yelich & sign Lorenzo Cain

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jan 4, 2018 -> 02:32 PM) Phil Rogers arguing for the White Sox and Yelich https://www.mlb.com/news/christian-yelich-w...sox/c-264272478 It all depends. If these prospects for the most part live up to their billing, 2019 is the year. If a couple get hurt or a couple just blow, then getting rid of a few for one guy could easily put you back close to square one. I guess I have an irrational worry about position prospects and the White Sox. It's been so long since anyone really has looked like they had a clue, I don't trust it until they have done it in the major leagues for a while. I'm excited about Moncada and Eloy, but there is always this thought in the back of my mind somehow they won't be able to hit. Far different than the 90s and early 2000s when it seemed everyone they traded for or signed or brought up at least could hit. They might not be able to do anything else, but that was most of the time true. -
Fake Rumor: White Sox and Moustakas "Close" on Deal.
Dick Allen replied to KnightsOnMintSt's topic in Pale Hose Talk
QUOTE (Eminor3rd @ Jan 4, 2018 -> 02:28 PM) If Moustakas signs for $5m per year, then the Castillo comparison becomes fair. Obviously, if the price gets too low, there becomes a point where it definitely makes sense. But we need to remember that even though it feels like we have a s***-ton of payroll space available now, those $10-15m deals can become really problematic with a franchise like ours that isn't willing to push the payroll up to the CBT like other large markets. I couldn't care less about how rich JR is now or in the future, but the reality is he's only going to spend so much, and the story of the White Sox during this recent playoff drought can pretty much be summed up as "blowing payroll on 2 WAR players whose names carry more weight than their actual production." For team that has been 10 million bucks short on filling their holes several times, there's a lot of risk signing an average player two years before you need him. On a per game basis, his WAR the last 3 seasons is on par with Jose Abreu. He's also a year and a half younger. If Abreu signed an extension, not many people would be complaining. I don't know why they would complain about a LH 3b/!b guy with power. I wouldn't give him $20 million a year. -
Fake Rumor: White Sox and Moustakas "Close" on Deal.

QUOTE (steveno89 @ Jan 4, 2018 -> 02:10 PM) Soxtalk would be pretty livid if Moustakas was signed. I think Hahn is smart enough to realize what a bad idea that would be. How pissed will Soxtalk be if Machado, Harper, and Donaldson all sign with teams not named the White Sox and the White Sox need some offense? Homers are what wins now. This guy could be a 40 HR guy at GRF. I understand it may be a year too soon, but like trades, a year too soon is usually better than a year too late. If the price is right, I don't see how it's a bad idea, unless they are on 2020 as the target year. Then I could see, no way. Eventually, the White Sox are going to have to add something other than prospects. Wellington Castillo is hardly aligned perfectly for the rebuild. Moustakas would be aligned a bit better than him, and he's an asset that doesn't cost you your better prospects, just basically JR's money. Theo went after FA pitching early. Edwin Jackson didn't work out. He wanted a couple of others he was lucky he didn't get. Prices aren't going to come down next year or the year after. If the deal is right, you make it. -
QUOTE (KagakuOtoko @ Jan 4, 2018 -> 12:39 PM) And the dumb tall oaf decides to set shave and win 2-1. Up 5-3 in the first set and loses the tie breaker. Classic Tennis. 6-11-1 YTD +$33.40 Alright EPL action! Tottenham WestHam O 3.5! $100 to win $140. This is a fun thread to follow. If I were you, I'd be in a rubber room in about 2 days. How do you do it?

Fake Rumor: White Sox and Moustakas "Close" on Deal.

QUOTE (pablo @ Jan 4, 2018 -> 12:24 PM) I've seen it mentioned that if Moustakas doesn't like the market now, he might sign a 1 year 17-18M deal and try again next offseason. If that's the case, no draft pick would be forfeited right? He won't do that. He will have even more competition next year. He'll take what he can get now. -

QUOTE (Jose Abreu @ Jan 4, 2018 -> 12:08 PM) The guy who tweeted this is my friend. It's 100% fabricated, he did it to see if anyone would believe him If it's on twitter, there are a lot of people who will believe him. -

Here is probably everyone's source: http://www.espn.com/blog/sweetspot/post/_/...stars-will-sign I wouldn't necessarily believe anything will happen. I still think for him to be in White Sox price range, the Royals would pounce or some other team. -

QUOTE (NCsoxfan @ Jan 4, 2018 -> 11:58 AM) What's the downside? Tying up payroll and losing a draft pick? The horror. The Sox would be a lock to sign Machado. With Moustakas, there is no chance. Whether it is true or not, or he is trying to ride on the coattails of the article on espn.com yesterday is anyone's guess. But there isn't a ton of downside here. Banking on Machado is foolish. There's a better chance the Bulls get Lebron. Donaldson could be great, but he will cost a lot more and be a couple of years older. Moustakas hurt his knee in 2016. It hurt his defense last year, which hurt his overall WAR, but he's a pretty good player with a ton of power and bats LH (Lillian would approve). The market may have made his price come down to the point it makes sense for the White Sox. Of course if you sign him, you have to be ready to compete in 2019. -
QUOTE (RockRaines @ Jan 4, 2018 -> 11:20 AM) Remember when republicans were for states rights? Wasn't that when even another $1 added to the deficit was ruining the future for our kids? The one thing I have learned is Republicans are pretty much against anything that will benefit anyone if it doesn't benefit them. If it benefits them personally, it's all good. As long as their taxes go down, bigger deficits mean nothing. They are all pro life until their mistress is pregnant. It goes on and on.

Personal cellphones being banned in the West Wing, and Trump's lawyers are trying to stop the now infamous book from being distributed. Paranoia.

QUOTE (bmags @ Jan 4, 2018 -> 10:54 AM) Saw this on twitter when walking and lost it now. I hate Kaplan, but he tweeted out that the Chiefs were in love with Trubisky pre-draft, especially Nagy. And Nagy has kept in touch with Trubs. That could end up being big. Any of these names who don't think Trubisky is a future franchise QB have zero chance of being hired. So put him at the top of the list.

Why would someone eat McDonald's if they fear being poisoned?

Trump is back to NFL protesters. Has to change the subject. I don't like Steve Bannon, and do fear some of his comments will make Trump a sympathetic rather than pathetic figure. But I do hope he is right and Jr. is cracked like an egg. That would be fun to watch.

2017-2018 MLB player movement rumors and reports

QUOTE (ChiSoxFanMike @ Jan 3, 2018 -> 02:37 PM) Moustakas isn't good enough to warrant losing a draft pick at this point in time given where the Sox are at as a franchise. Just my opinion. A second round pick and $500k of international money of which you can't go over $300k anyway? Please. At some point, you are going to have to add vets. Now may be the time to get him. I don't know. But if you think 2019 is the year the window can open, it's time to consider something like this, especially since the 3B market seems to be saturated and it could keep his cost down. The Sox could use some LH power. If it's 2020 you are shooting for, then holding off sounds reasonable. The price is key, and I would figure if it's a steep discount, he's going back to KC. -
QUOTE (bmags @ Jan 3, 2018 -> 01:42 PM) Michael Wolff's thing seems very lazy and I think he's going to get burned for being as lazy as he was. Maybe he was making an attempt at a Dishonest Media Fake News award. I'm sure they are coveted. BTW, when is Mexico sending the check for the wall?

2017-2018 MLB player movement rumors and reports
Dick Allen replied to southsider2k5's topic in Pale Hose Talk
QUOTE (ChiSoxFanMike @ Jan 3, 2018 -> 01:38 PM) Forfeiting a draft pick for him would be moronic. Chances of that pick being a better player than Moustakas are slim. I also think its slim they sign him, but probably like him a lot and if you gave him 4 or 5 years, he is there for when the winning is supposed to commence. It also would probably take Machado out of the equation, but then again, maybe not. Who knows, maybe Moustakis moves to 1B in a couple of years, and his presence helps convince a guy like Machado to take the White Sox money. -
Trump will be announcing the Most Dishonest and Fake News Media Awards on Monday at 5 pm. Stay close to a phone or a computer. Chicks dig big buttons. This has to be Candid Camera or something doesn't it? I keep waiting for someone to pop on camera and tell everyone how much they have been played.

2017-2018 MLB player movement rumors and reports
Dick Allen replied to southsider2k5's topic in Pale Hose Talk
In the ESPN.COM column on remaining free agents and where they will sign, for Moustakis, they gave the White Sox as best bet. I always figured the way Hawk went on and on about him, he was highly regarded at 35th and Shields. You have to wonder if his knee surgery hurt his defense, and if so, if it's permanent, but if they are being realistic, and his price is down, his bat would look really good at GRF. I would think if KC and the Sox were offering the same dough, he would stay where he's at. -
QUOTE (GoSox05 @ Jan 3, 2018 -> 09:45 AM) It's a tough question. I don't quite get the McDaniels love. He has a good offensive mind, but it's not like Brady struggled without him. Also, McDaniels had arguably one of the worst runs at head coaching. He was a complete disaster. Not saying he won't be better next time. It would just make me really nervous to hire him. Who knows? Pete Carroll was pretty much a flop until he wasn't. It was 3 years ago most thought John Fox was a really good idea. Maybe you have to be lucky as well. His staff is going to be important as well. I still think the key considering Trubisky is now basically thought of as the franchise by the front office, is going to be the OC.
-
I wonder if the coal miners will be getting a $1000 before tax bonus.
-
The most important question when interviewing these guys is who will be your OC?

QUOTE (greg775 @ Jan 2, 2018 -> 01:38 PM) But I stand during the anthem at games just not in private or in bars. I think standing in a bar could get you punched by the way. It'd seem like you are being abnoxious again in drawing attention to yourself. I did not know many people stood in private. That practice of standing alone during the anthem in a house or apartment surprised me that people do it. I don't know if anyone does it, in fact, I suspect 99.99% of people do not, but I do find it odd that if they don't, they think these players are being unpatriotic for not standing, unless they are fine with being unpatriotic themselves. Whatever the reason players don't stand, and it's not to disrespect the military, the military fought for their right to do so. Just because Trump and all of his minions want him to be a dictator, which is very disrespectful to the military BTW, doesn't mean it's a good idea.
