20 Year Anniversary of the White Flag Trade

QUOTE (Thad Bosley @ Jul 30, 2017 -> 10:25 PM) Nooooo, we had a GM during that time, a fella as I mentioned earlier named Ron Schueler. Should think I wouldn't have to remind your prescient mind about him, Dick, but apparently I do, and I already did in a post prior to this knee-jerk rant against me, but whatever. Do us all a favor and put the "evil Thad Bosley comments" that you are now railing against to rest by presenting Ron Schueler's statements in 1997 about what "wasn't available and for what cost" at that deadline that caused the team's course of action then. You're the guy saying everything Reinsdorf or Schueler did was stupid, like you know better and are far smarter. Yet you HAVE NO ANSWERS. Besides having a problem with JR in which you really do need some professional help, you also are a phony. If your so smart, tell us who they obviously passed on that would have made up the 6 games quite easily. -
QUOTE (SonofaRoache @ Jul 31, 2017 -> 08:49 AM) Why- Because fans wont show up to the Rate unless the Sox are a consistent playoff contender, which they haven't been since the 1910's. What- The Cell does not provide a spot where fans can come early to the game and go home late. There is nothing to do outside of watching baseball. Not hotels, bars, stores, tourist attractions, etc within the scope of the park. There also isn't much foot traffic around the Park unless there is a Sox game going on. Where- Roosevelt was a proposed location and that would be great. There are always people walking around that area and it could turn into a Sox community so to speak. People can spend their day or night in the area and close by. Families from the burbs or out of town can be tourisy or even stay at a hotel nearby if they have a little too much fun. Who will pay- The same folks who always do sadly. But if they make that move I would turn the stadium into an entertainment center for all types of events. Exactly what was/is around that Roosevelt location that would bring people in early and have them stay late? The Target? That is just another White Sox fan excuse. The ChiSox bar and grill has half priced apps after every game. After every game it is empty.

QUOTE (soxfan2014 @ Jul 31, 2017 -> 08:50 AM) You gotta count on your scouts to find those low-A gems that could potentially be available. Guys with flaws you think can be fixed. I don't think anyone is expecting big returns for any of the remaining guys. Just something. Something is better than nothing at all for a guy you're losing in 2 months. Yeah, I get that. But what the Sox have to offer at this point gets you a huge longshot at best, and if they are now as stacked in the minors as many believe, it will be a player that probably isn't going to get much of an opportunity. They will be in the back of a very long line. The White Sox minor league system is turning the exact opposite of their major league team. Not much of an opportunity unless you have a decent resume.
-
The bottom line is unless they decide to trade Abreu or maybe Avi, the prospects coming back won't be very interesting. Gonzalez is a 5th starter really on a good team, if that. If Holland had signed with a contender and not the White Sox, he would have been released by now. Pelfrey will get you nothing. He was already available for free to all the teams. After a slow start, Hahn has gotten rid of just about everything he wanted to get rid of that would net them at least something that had a chance.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jul 31, 2017 -> 07:16 AM) When the lease ends, this stadium will be nearly 40 years old. We may not see it, but guarantee that there will be some parts of the structure inside showing their age by then. What level of "fall apart" are we talking about? Another thing most don't see is how much maintenance is done on the park. Anyone who has gone to past Grinder Bashes has seen during White Sox road trips, entire sections of seats gone, redoing concrete in several sections. Sure there will be some wear and tear, but they have kept on top of it for the most part. Something they didn't do for years at the old park which lasted over 80 seasons. So that shouldn't be much of a problem.
-
Pelfrey gets paid by Detroit, so he's making minimum. Someone might take him, but it won't be for anything worth talking about. And someone has to pitch.
-
I'm pretty sure at this point the only players who make more than Holland on the White Sox are Shields and Abreu.
-
QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Jul 31, 2017 -> 07:52 AM) Last day of non waiver deals, do you think any of these guys go? Maybe Gonzalez. I don't know why any contender would want the other 2 or would think they couldn't clear waivers. A contender happily dumped Clippard. Holland has been just as bad as James Shields was last season his last 10 starts or so.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jul 30, 2017 -> 08:14 PM) I really wonder if Illinois will risk losing the Sox over a stadium? They have nothing to worry about. First, they almost already lost them. It took a lot of arm twisting,, but if MLB hasn't fled Oakland or Tampa yet, they aren't going to flee Chicago with a better stadium, and more revenue. I don't know why this is even discussed. The White Sox make money.

QUOTE (steveno89 @ Jul 30, 2017 -> 06:31 PM) Will be interesting to see what decision is made in the next decade about a future stadium. Could be a very good opportunity to relocate? They won't get any help from the city or state. I think they are where they are long term.

QUOTE (WBWSF @ Jul 30, 2017 -> 05:37 PM) 1) This is the 27th season the White Sox have played in the present stadium. I find it interesting that fans are still complaining about attendance and the stadium location. If JR had done it right when the new stadium was built we wouldn't be complaining about the attendance and stadium. All he had to do was build a nice stadium in a good location, which he didn't do. 2) For what it's worth I think the next White Sox stadium will be built by the United Center when the present lease runs out. The stadium is fine. It is actually better now than they day it opened.i have a coffee table book filled with pictures of Comiskey Park during the 1977 season. You wouldn't believe what a dump that place was then. But that park, same location, is beloved, even by me. But the truth is, it has been upgraded.

This is a serious question. With all the multiple prospects acquired in trades, and the draft picks, especially if in the next 2 years they draft a guy who can play relatively quickly, are the White Sox looking at a 40 man roster crunch in a couple of years?

QUOTE (Lip Man 1 @ Jul 30, 2017 -> 04:57 PM) Greg: Thank you. It took a lot of time to research, look through old video clips and so on. It was one of those stories that when I got into it, I really wanted to do it well and accurately. I loved how you glossed over Howry and Foulke contributions and glossed right over the 2000 division title, they contributed mightily.in order to b**** about a division they weren't going to win anyway. Look at Alvarez's performance in SF. He had a bad rest of the season. Also of note, the next season after you wrote this claiming the league had "caught up " to Foulke, he had a great year and led the league in saves. And although you mentioned the Jaime Navarro disaster, you overlooked the trade of Navarro for Eldred and Valentin. -
Nice game. At least the past 2 have been competive. Even if last night was close to 4 hours.
-
Rodon is pretty good today.
-
If Davidson didn't strike out in any of his next 181 plate appearances, he would still have a 25% k rate. Which is higher than Dave Kingman.

QUOTE (The Mighty Mite @ Jul 30, 2017 -> 09:20 AM) I've been a fan since the early 1950s and I don't remember ever reading about weather and rain being an issue in Spring Training in the Sunshine state. It all comes down to the owners holding out their greedy hands and saying "show me the money" if you don't build me a stadium in Orlando, Mesa said they will. You know that JR got Sarasota to build them a great facility in the early 90s then being the jerk that he is, he wanted out and got the Orioles to take over the lease. Screw all the Sox fans that retired to Sarasota so to watch their team in ST. AZ is better for the travel because of the concentration of teams. It does suck for Sox fans who retired to the Sarasota area. But it is better for the team as they can get their work in and still play in the games.

Lopez coming sooner, rather than later?

QUOTE (Chicago White Sox @ Jul 30, 2017 -> 09:23 AM) He has in his last seven starts or so. He's been down-right dominant the last few weeks. I am sure he will be up soon. Hahn pretty much gave it away. I would imagine they are waiting until the deadline comes and goes so they know what they are dealing with roster wise. -

QUOTE (Thad Bosley @ Jul 30, 2017 -> 09:07 AM) In your haste to try and take issue with my fact-based criticism of the owner who routinely brings you losing White Sox baseball, you conveniently skipped over the part where I said we should have "added" players at that deadline. Isn't that what all teams in contention at the deadline look to do? Add? What's "sick" is the team didn't, and let a team with only 86 wins walk away with the division. No. In your haste to tell us how evil Reinsdorf is again, you never mentioned who and what was available and for what cost at the 1997 deadline that would have easily made up the 6 games., and forgot the White Sox employ a GM. You're a one trick pony. Reinsdorf, Reinsdorf, Reinsdorf.... SNL should do a skit. -
QUOTE (greg775 @ Jul 29, 2017 -> 10:21 PM) There's no way in hell Royals would put Saladino at short over Escobar. That's ridiculous. There's no way in hell the Royals would start Migo or Holland. They are never that despearate. Melky? Yeah they'd probably take him. I'd try to rob them and get the disappointing Starling. Trade Melky and Tito Polo for Starling. Why would the Sox want Starling?

QUOTE (Thad Bosley @ Jul 30, 2017 -> 08:51 AM) If you look at the final record of that season, and see the Sox only finished six games back of a team that won the division with a mere 86 wins, then you would realize the owner was not correct in his conclusion a all. Instead of subtracting players the team should have looked to add players to close that measly 3 1/2 game gap, which by season's end, only grew to six games. Again, Cleveland only won 86 games that season. It's not like they ran off with some insurmountable lead. How many times do you see a team that's only 3 1/2 games out of playoff contention fold their cards at the trade deadline like the Sox did that year? If there are, they're not many, and for those that have, they probably received the same fair criticism Reinsdorf did when this ill-advised decision was made. You're right. Not making that trade makes that team at least 6 games better, the amount they were behind when the season ended. Your Reimsdorf obsession is sick, but hilarious at the same time. While everyone else is wondering what the deal is with Tim Anderson when he throws the ball into the stands, I bet you are blaming Reinsdorf. -
QUOTE (WBWSF @ Jul 30, 2017 -> 08:40 AM) JR would have never wanted to move to Addison and Tuscon if he didn't own the land. He should get a kick in his rear end for passing up the South Loop offer that the City of Chicago made. I've never met anybody who thinks the franchise is better off at its present location as opposed to the South loop location. Also when the tax benefits ran out in Tuscon he moved the team to Glendale. Do you have a link to the South Loop offer he turned down? I do know there was some sort of preliminary plan to build a stadium the Sox and Bears would share but the Bears said no. Here's a link with the truth. Put your BS to rest. http://articles.chicagotribune.com/1986-04...s-soldier-field

QUOTE (Thad Bosley @ Jul 30, 2017 -> 07:36 AM) They of the 86 entire wins to win the division that year, Indians? Yes, I can see how the genius owner could reach that conclusion then. I mean, how can you catch 86 wins. Would be a fool's errand to even think about trying! If you look at the performance of the traded players after the trade, you would realize he was correct. Karhner was fine as the closer the rest of the year. Darwin was no loss. Alvarez was a loss, but did pitch like crap the rest of the season. Foulke and Howry helped the team get good again. -
White Sox scored zero runs off their bunt tonight. Keep on bunting in the free world.

QUOTE (ChiSoxJon @ Jul 29, 2017 -> 02:04 PM) Wouldn't mind Washington as MNGR when the team can compete He might snort the foul lines.
