How close were the Sox to getting Fernando Valenzuela?
Dick Allen replied to Quin's topic in Pale Hose Talk
QUOTE (JoshPR @ Aug 8, 2015 -> 10:34 AM) He pitched decently for the orioles too If his performance for the Orioles was decent, don't ever rag on John Danks again. Fernando had a heck of a career, but really struggled late in the AL. -
QUOTE (Harry Chappas @ Aug 8, 2015 -> 10:47 AM) Seems like Gronk is the guy that has managed to live a crazy life without getting into trouble. I could be wrong. A lot of these guys are living crazy lives but staying out of trouble. Troubke seems to find the same small percentage over and over again. Personally, I think one of Kane's biggest problems, if not most professional athletes' biggest problems, is his "posse". You read local Buffalo stuff about that crew, and beimg in a lot of trouble doesn't surprise a lot of people.

QUOTE (Y2JImmy0 @ Aug 8, 2015 -> 09:18 AM) But what if said girl is 17 years old possibly (which is being speculated) and is in a bar with a fake ID that says she's 20/21/22 years old? If this is the case, which has been possibly rumored, he's still guilty of statutory rape even though I don't think there's much he could do. I do know a girl can show you a fake ID, be drinking in a bar using the fake ID, but if she is underage, you are in trouble. There are literally thousands of hot girls who would f*** Kane without issue. He finds one where there is some sort of problem. Either he dead horsed her,she isn't of age, she said no but he continued, the day after she decided she wasn't a one night stand type of girl and was emabarrassd, she is just trying to make some money....whatever. Because he is a Blackhawk, many in Chicago think Kane is their buddy,(in reality he cares 2 s***s,about you )and backs him up. If he were a Red Wing, we would all be discussing what an awful and stupid person he is.

Game was lost in the 8th. Saladino missed 2 hangers one he didn't swimg at, Abreu didn't swing at one and struck out on a pitch a foot outside.

QUOTE (iamshack @ Aug 7, 2015 -> 08:36 PM) I completely agree a player has a responsibility to represent the franchise on and off the ice. What I don't agree with is that that responsibility extends to vetting every sexual partner one takes. By signing a contract and accepting compensation, an athlete does not give up his right to being a human being with human needs. The athlete does not give up his right to enjoying his compensation and the enjoyment that compensation affords in a reasonable manner. If that is indeed the expectation of the organization, I would say there needs to be additional consideration given to the player, in the form of no trade clauses, more guaranteed money, and honestly, more services provided to the player. The organization is allowed to treat the athletes as commodities, because "that's business." Well, if this is just "business," then that "business" does not extend to any responsibility by the athlete to do anything other than simply performing his duties on the field of play. The organization cannot have it both ways. It cannot simultaneously require the athlete to accept being treated like cattle or soybeans, to be used up and then discarded after their utility has diminished, while also requiring the athlete to be an "ambassador" representing the organization 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. If they want tor receive the benefits of employing a human being, that expectation should extend to more humane treatment of the athlete as well. If Kane has a brain, he would vet every sexual partner he has, not for the Blackhawks, but for himself. NBC said Rocky is sad and pissed off.

I think they should put Harold in the booth. I don't blame Pods. This isn't what he does, but he needs a lot of work if he wants to do this full time somewhere. He is certainly no natural.

QUOTE (soxfan2014 @ Aug 7, 2015 -> 08:22 PM) Pods: Hawk, you turning Sanchez loose? (Dead air) Hawk was probably in shock Pods said something.

QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Aug 7, 2015 -> 08:14 PM) Made a jumping catch going towards the wall took a few steps and tumbled, and landed on his shoulder awkwardly I hope it isn't collarbone, I didn't like how he was holding his arm Looking at the replay, it looks like his shoulder was hurt before he landed. Hawk said he was having shoulder issues. Hopefully, he didn't tear something.

QUOTE (harkness @ Aug 6, 2015 -> 06:20 PM) Flowers isn't the biggest issue by any means but I think it's time to look for something else at that position. I would say that is fair. I am sure they have been looking.
-
QUOTE (South Side Fireworks Man @ Aug 6, 2015 -> 06:14 PM) Flowers' offense wouldn't be a problem if he was good defensively. He's not a good defensive catcher. He is not terribke and he ranks really high pitch framing. One thing is for sure, once Flowers is gone, pitch framing will start to count around here.
-
QUOTE (CWSpalehoseCWS @ Aug 6, 2015 -> 05:51 PM) I think Flowers gets a bad rep more than most because he's been with the organization since 2009. Plus remember when he was acquired, everyone thought the Sox got this great offensive hitter. He's been a huge disappointment, but like a lot of people have said in this thread - he's not the biggest problem for the Sox. There really aren't many "great" catchers in baseball at the moment. White Sox catchers collective WAR is higher than the Royals catchers collective WAR, and no ime here would think C is a huge need in KC. I think you hit the nail on the head. There are 3 catchers putting up at least a 2 WAR right now.
-
If Kane really raped someone, an NHL suspension would be the least of his worries. He wouldn't be playing.
-
Soto and Phegley each have a higher WAR than Sal Perez.
-
QUOTE (ChiSox59 @ Aug 6, 2015 -> 03:18 PM) I wouldn't be very surprised if someone claimed him. No way. He probably will get traded after he clears, but the Red Sox are picking up a lot of the $$$$, and not getting much back.
-
QUOTE (AustinIllini @ Aug 6, 2015 -> 02:47 PM) I am real, dude. The NFL punishes people who settle or are cleared. I expect the NHL to do the same. If Kane gets charged, I agree, he isn't playing while awaiting trial. But he either will be charged or cleared before the season starts.
-
QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Aug 6, 2015 -> 03:11 PM) $16 million this year, then he becomes a free agent. Blistering .701 OPS too He will have no problem clearing waivers. If someone claims him, the Red Sox will be doing an Irish jig.
-
QUOTE (HickoryHuskers @ Aug 6, 2015 -> 02:55 PM) He's not going to clear waivers. What does he get paid?
-
QUOTE (Baron @ Aug 6, 2015 -> 03:01 PM) I was not one of those people at all. Heck even at his age AJ is having a very nice year for Atlanta. I imagine he's not gonna play much longer. But so far that decision was a mistake and it's still ongoing. It was a mistake, but it didn't cost the White Sox any trophies. Finding a really good catcher who can hit and play defense is a trick GMs pretty much luck into.
-
QUOTE (Baron @ Aug 6, 2015 -> 02:56 PM) His defense hasnt been good. He's hitting has been awful to say the least. His pitch framing doesnt count into WAR which shows he isnt average. He's just bad. But we cant do anything about it until December. I mean Soto could get more starts or more time batting at DH. But that would be too logical for this coaching staff. As soon as Soto started playing more, his numbers would decline. Flowers used to be that guy. People couldn't wait for AJ to leave.
-
Flowers sucks, but the difference between him and a typical catcher these days isn't enough to bring out all the disdain. He's not good, but look at the catchers in baseball. There aren't many who are. I was at a game vs. KC a couple Sundays ago, and the Sox were stinking up the joint. a guy a section over put up with everyone sucking except when Flowers struck out he couldn't help himself. It seems to be a theme in Soxville. If Flowers was the Sox biggest problem, Robin would be getting his rotation set for the playoffs right now.
-
QUOTE (AustinIllini @ Aug 6, 2015 -> 02:33 PM) If the rumor that the woman was very young is true, the camera doesn't help. The issue could be a matter of consent or her age, which is grey and a camera doesn't necessarily help. I think that was a false rumor, but a girl can look 40, show you an ID that says she is 40, and if you have sex with her and she really is underage, you still are looking at a lot of trouble.

QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Aug 6, 2015 -> 01:19 PM) There was a stat last year that the Sox had like an under .333 winning percentage when Nieto caught. Once it was broken down, it turned out he had zero Sale/Quintana starts and solely caught Danks/Noesi/Carroll/Rienzo and company, which explained it all. 6-26 in his starts. I guess that explains it.
