2014-2015 NFL Football thread

QUOTE (bmags @ Mar 12, 2014 -> 04:03 PM) My friend is a huge Browns fan and I seriously feel so terrible for him. Is there a team more comparable to the KC Chiefs? They have everything but good coaching and a good QB and they have done nothing to correct that. Chiefs have a pretty good coach. -
QUOTE (HickoryHuskers @ Mar 12, 2014 -> 01:22 PM) Winter weather history: 21 years ago today, a massive winter storm hit the entire eastern third of the country. I was on my way back to South Bend from Spring Break in Florida. We hit heavy wind and snow just north of Atlanta. Near Chattanooga, the driver's side windshield wiper snapped off--not just the blade but the entire arm. We found a service station that switched the still-functional passenger side wiper over to the driver's side. We left Chattanooga less than an hour before police shut down the interstates going in and out of Chattanooga. We drove through a blizzard, on a curvy and hilly interstate, with one windshield wiper. Possibly the dumbest thing I've ever done. I was stuck in Alabama for three days.

QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Mar 12, 2014 -> 01:36 PM) Good for him after coaching high school football 18 months ago. It will be interesting to see him go from Trestman to the offensive guru Lovie. He played for Lovie in 2012 -
QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Mar 12, 2014 -> 12:34 PM) At that level, he could potentially be considered a sophisticated investor (this is a LEGAL term, not making a subjective judgment), and he could in theory enter into some hedge funds. But the reality is, there simply are no reliable outliers from the simple concept of risk versus return. Hedge Funds, even really good ones, can tank in a hurry and then those people lose a LOT. Same with any individual stock. Stock funds or ETF's and the like, the potential returns are more subdued, but with significantly less risk (and still can make good money if you invest smartly). Or you can buy bonds and make small returns with minimal risk. The key is horizon. A 10 year horizon is long-term investing. That means, probably, a diversified group of funds/ETF's are that person's best bet, IMO. Did you not read SS2K5's post just a little ways up? The markets have gone crazy the last few years, with immense gains. Now, if you are talking employment and adjusted wages, that is a different issue. Last two years S&P is up 24%. A diversified portfolio would be up 17%. While the middle class (which I am part of) has wage and employment issues. Retirement funds (401(k)'s are doing just fine).

QUOTE (Alpha Dog @ Mar 11, 2014 -> 01:04 PM) Only in America can a guy donate $100 million dollars to build a hospital and be protested by the very people it will help, and employ. Why? Because he is an evil Republican!!!!! I fully expect that all these nurses will refuse jobs in the new space on principle, as well as refusing care should they ever require its services. http://freebeacon.com/blog/koch-brother-do...t-not-a-parody/ Never underestimate the stupidity of people. Social media never fails to prove that point.

Remember when the meteorologist would say in February, if this rain was snow we would have 8 inches. Well this is the winter when all of those moments are snow.
-
QUOTE (ptatc @ Mar 12, 2014 -> 08:29 AM) My Christmas tree made an appaerence for two days. Now buried again under the new 6 inches of snow we got last night. Mine too. I really wanted to move it yesterday. 6 inches of almost immovable heavy snow. f***

QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Mar 11, 2014 -> 01:10 PM) I could watch that all day long.

QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Mar 10, 2014 -> 01:12 PM) We're a week behind on The Walking Dead. I just sat through 30 minutes of Rick hiding under a bed from characters we've never met before. If my wife didn't want to watch this, I'd have dropped it already. Instead, I will just continue to complain about the badness. Like the fake red hair on the guy from Band of Brothers and Southland. WTF is that. It's like he used a Crayola marker to color it. Those guys come into play two episodes later. The filler episode you will watch next week kind of builds into the following episode. The season appears to be trying to build up characters and relationships and create a new game plan to extend the series. The draw of the series is down a little but I still find it entertaining.

QUOTE (Dunt @ Mar 7, 2014 -> 02:05 PM) According to who? ESPN radio was talking briefly about it and MLB home plate on Sirius said they could surprise.
-
QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Mar 7, 2014 -> 03:46 PM) Emphatically this. Rose would be the third best player on the team behind Melo and Joakim until he shows me something. The Joakim Noah role we are seeing in his current form is not the Joakim Noah role that we would see along side Melo or Rose.

QUOTE (SCCWS @ Mar 7, 2014 -> 03:48 PM) Maybe we finally have a leadoff hitter. But one big concern w him is his defense. How has he looked so far in CF. I have no clue but it can't be any worse than any other center fielders trotted out there is millennium.

Seems there is some buzz picking up nationally for your Chicago White Sox, Eaton, Abreu, Garcia and a healthy Danks seem to have piqued interest.
-
QUOTE (RockRaines @ Mar 5, 2014 -> 02:50 PM) Detroit gave up a little bit for Legwand but pretty good pickup there. I really hate that the Hawks think they can stay pat this year. That second line center is going to do them in again I fear.

Every cub story this spring is about how much their revenue is going to increase over the upoming years and the awesome prospects. There is no talk at all about the current season.
-
QUOTE (ChiSox_Sonix @ Mar 3, 2014 -> 09:41 AM) I still watch it and generally enjoy it, but last night's Walking Dead may have been the worst episode of the entire series The point they were trying to make in that episode was made early on little brother follows older brother around. Unless the two of them form some sort of relationship I do not see the point at all to that episode. There was no really back story learned there unless I missed something.

Gotta say it was cold and snowy but it was a great time. State of Illinois figured there was no need to plow the dan Ryan. Chicago all clear.

QUOTE (RockRaines @ Feb 28, 2014 -> 09:23 AM) Well, do you really want Rose to recruit his brother? As team physician maybe he would only be rivaled by former Illinois point guard/doctor Chester Frazier -
QUOTE (RockRaines @ Feb 27, 2014 -> 09:59 AM) Lots of people are chickening out. I will be at the warm bar for sure. 1500 tickets on stubhub That's not that bad......although it depends how much over/under face they are asking.

Not really looking as forward to Saturday as I was a couple of months back. Weather is going to be abysmal.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Feb 25, 2014 -> 01:09 PM) I'd genuinely guess that another thing scouts will be interested in is the degree of preparation these guys do physically to prepare for the combine. It gives GMs a chance to see how their bodies and minds respond to that kind of pressure, that's another useful point. My problem with that is it sustainable. The guy from BC a number of years back came out of nowhere and lite up the combine but never really panned out. The combine is nice but any outlier really needs to be looked at. -
I think Abreu sits opening day to allow him to become acclimated. I think he sits a little more often early especially if it is cold. Dunn will get booed big time so he may sit the opener.

Official 2013-2014 College Hoops Thread
Harry Chappas replied to Brian's topic in Alex’s Olde Tyme Sports Pub
QUOTE (Brian @ Feb 20, 2014 -> 10:10 PM) Get ready for the floor storming argument. NC, I agree with Dickie v in this case. -
QUOTE (HickoryHuskers @ Feb 19, 2014 -> 03:25 PM) Probably not that one since neither of those teams is GBR. Scroll down to the video clip to see the end of the shot. http://bleacherreport.com/articles/1964433...win-over-norway GBR has as easy point to tie to go to the 11th but they lose the hammer. If GBR can knock out the two Norwegian rocks and lay inside another Norwegian stone they win in the 10th end and match with a two point score. If they miss the shot lose and are out of the tourney and medal contention. GBR called timeout so there was a good amount of build up and analysis for the shot and what other options were out there that was pretty cool. The best part of the match was the Norwegian Skip slowly lossing his s***. It was awesome

QUOTE (HickoryHuskers @ Feb 19, 2014 -> 01:43 PM) No I didn't see it. I'll have to check it out on the highlights later. They played Sweden today, the one I was talking about was from Norway yesterday. The buildup was what made it cool.
