QUOTE (ChiSox_Sonix @ Jan 21, 2014 -> 08:01 AM) I watched the first part of the Discovery miniseries Klondike last night and found it very enjoyable Ya it was pretty good. Three day run which is cool.

QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Jan 21, 2014 -> 08:06 AM) That has to suck for the lifetime professional bobsledders. You spend your whole life practicing dreaming of the Olympic team and you think you are the best until suddenly these track stars show up and take your spot in the Games. Driver and Brakeman are the real skill folks here. In the fourman, the pushers are the athletes. Herschel Walker did this.

QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Jan 21, 2014 -> 09:50 AM) Quietly I believe Rose plays this year. Bulls just know they have to be smart and toe the line of he won't play. Then if he does, its gravy. Then the Deng trade makes no sense unless they really felt they were better without Deng. If Rose comes back and Deng is not there, what happens. Could the Bulls reacquire Deng at the deadline?

QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Jan 19, 2014 -> 01:11 AM) Really? After the last two years were still on LeBron's killer instinct? No just yanking your chain. He is top 5.

QUOTE (Quinarvy @ Jan 19, 2014 -> 12:28 AM) "Speaking at the Cubs Convention today, Cubs President of Baseball Operations Theo Epstein said the team erred in promoting Brett Jackson to the majors in 2012, commenting that the outfielder may have required more minor league seasoning (via MLB.com's Carrie Muskat). Jackson struggled to a .175/.303/.342 line in 142 plate appearances, and returned to the minors in 2013 to hit just .210/.296/.330. Epstein explained that then-manager Dale Sveum wanted to work on developing Jackson's swing." Don't worry guys. Baez/Bryant/Almora/Soler are all gonna be stars! Josh Vitters......the 2003 game six v Florida was covered on MLBN top games of last twenty years I could watch that game on a loop until I take my last breath. I love you Dusty and piss hands.

LeBron is top 5 he toys with folk, if he had a killer instinct he would be worth watching

Sign Tanaka and the PR is get your lazy, cheap, JR hating, asses down to Sox Park you cheap ass hillbilly mutherf***ers. That could be the whiskey talking though.

The Ghost of Jim Hendry is going to make the cubs overpay by about $40M. If the Sox get him around 6/$120 Rick Hahn should have a statue erected of himself by opening day.

QUOTE (Whitey @ Jan 17, 2014 -> 01:17 PM) Even if Tanaka were an average pitcher, I think it would be a wise business move to make. There is the international appeal, the mainstream attention, and the competition for top team in Chicago. It would be a huge attention grabber, ticket sales would increase, and their TV bucks go up... Not to mention, he could be an elite arm that is worth every dollar he gets. Seems like a solid business move to me. The problem with the cubs is that there are many moving pieces unrelated to baseball regarding their finances. They need to take debt servicing and park renovations into account when determining what is going on. They are also paying for Soriano this year so keep that in mind when looking at the 2014 payroll for them.

I would say it was the Yankees and maybe the cubs. The Dodgers just paid his agent $21M so I think there was no selling there and why they may have the inside track if they have the money. You did not hear of the cub interest until after the meeting. What could the cubs sell them in, seashells and balloons, Roonie Woo Woo , Horry Kow, Single A titles? the cubs drawing points are not really that intriguing at this point in time to actual baseball players. The White Sox can sell the success of Iguchi and Mr Zero. If both of them liked their time here and were brought in to sell the team/city that could go a long way. Both guys were huge fan favorites. You have a nice rotation to drop him between Sale and Quintana. I think the Yankees are used to opening a checkbook and getting their guy. Somehow with Tanaka, maybe the checkbook isn't what they are looking for.....

QUOTE (fathom @ Jan 16, 2014 -> 02:50 PM) Why agree to any deal right now if you have the biggest markets in the game bidding after your guy? Also, who knows, maybe the Dodgers told his agent (Kershaw's guy as well) that they'd be able to talk specifics about Tanaka as soon as Kershaw's deal was done. Because the Yankees in particular need to get their team set if the vibe is all starters and therefore teams are waiting for Tanaka to decide fine, but if the Yankees have Ubaldo as Plan B they need to make certain Plan B is still out there. Again everything could be on hold for free agents and teams until Tanaka is done so then, so be it.
-
Anyone think the proposals are not as great as they would like to see them. If the Yankees were dangling $150M out here do you not think that the deal would be closed by now. Personally I think the teams in play are the cubs, Sox and Mariners with none of them being as high as expected. My guess, Chicago White Sox 5 years $100M. the cubs and White Sox will not give a 3 year out as the expectation is the horizon for these teams will be much rosier in 3 years as it is today. He may say screw it and stay in Japan if the numbers are not looking good.

QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Jan 16, 2014 -> 09:26 AM) And they are round. So are boobs. Which are not orange. Tan mom proves otherwise.

I bet the Tigers had wished they'd have locked up or moved Max before this and the Tanaka deal.

QUOTE (southside hitman @ Jan 15, 2014 -> 02:37 PM) As a Sox fan, I am conflicted on if the Yankees or Cubs signing Tanaka would disguise me the most. If not the Sox, I hope Arizona gets him. I say Dodgers, anything to make the cub rebuild from getting a trophy all that much harder.

Bobby Jenks wants to make a comeback
Harry Chappas replied to The Ultimate Champion's topic in Pale Hose Talk
QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Jan 15, 2014 -> 08:37 AM) Because baseball is not the real world. He is done as a baseball player. Why don't the Sox just sign 1000 guys to minor league contracts? Bobby made $26 million, now he needs to make sure his life is straight and make sure his kids lives are OK. Plus, I think he is a shaky influence at best to the younger players in the organization. Bobby wasn't always the most mature guy around. I once saw an interview where he blew his nose into his jersey right on camera. Some may think that is hysterical, but it showed a lack of several things. He had a back issue that was screwed up and now is corrected. Bullpens are a crapshoot, taking a flyer on Jenks could be helpful, I do not see how it would hurt. -
The 800lb gorilla in the corner as has been pointed out and is the the overriding theme is the debt that the team holds and is responsible for paying down via cash flow. Rebuilding the way they have is great but a couple of things that may have been missed in translation. The northside renaissance has cooled in that while it is still a very unique and cool place and charm of the city, the cubs have worn out their welcome to a degree. Fans still want to see the Kerry Wood, Sammy Sosa, decent looking chicks, etc. They priced themselves out of the experience and now there is more entertainment. Street fairs and bars are all over the place up there now as opposed to the mid-90's. Traffic and congestion along with the price tag are no longer the draw they once were. Sunk cost and lower revenue are hurting them there. In regard to television contracts. You have Comcast and Fox going toe to toe here. The cubs have a network and it is network that should offer the same if not more than a single agreement. Offering time on the Blackhawks, Bulls and White Sox along with the cubs should have some benefit.

Official 2013-2014 NCAA Football Thread

QUOTE (RockRaines @ Jan 10, 2014 -> 01:29 PM) That's the opposite of what every big time program is doing. They are having special cafés, meal plans, dietitians, lounges etc only for athletes. Rate of Student to student athlete is much higher in those schools than at Notre Dame. Notre Dame has a large athletic program so the percentage of students at Notre Dame that are student athletes is probably much greater than most if not all schools that are not Duke or Stanford. -
QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Jan 10, 2014 -> 10:44 AM) The point that you accept it won't work is when Peyton Manning says "I am retiring from the NFL." If you have the Sheriff, you put all your bullets into that team to try and bring one in. Yep that's your horse ride it until it needs to be shot.

Meathead sox fan in me wants Tanaka as it would be a major blow to north side v south side rebuild. The white sox off season would be one of the biggest turnarounds in recent memory. The cubs would almost be an afterthought in the city for 2014. The realist, that is a lot of money....

QUOTE (Soxbadger @ Jan 9, 2014 -> 11:00 AM) Another classic "blame the victim" post. Her heart stopped during a routine surgery, I have seen 0 evidence that she has ever been "awake" after the surgery. So please find me this article so I can eviscerate them. Thanks in advance. And I assume that if a Dr/Hospital hurts your kid, youd be cool if they just throw you out in the street, companies should never have to take responsibility for their mistakes. LOL Or actually COL (cries out loud) Bleeding occurred three days after complex surgery. Something seems odd about this as if the hospital was at fault I would think the family would be more up in arms that they a. they killed their daughter and b) are now throwing her out. http://www.latimes.com/local/lanow/la-me-l...s#axzz2pwgL4wJ3 -
QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Jan 9, 2014 -> 03:56 PM) He'd have to win 6-7 titles. And even then I don't know that he would. Not really. Jordan has kind of played his post Bulls career rather poorly similar to what Dick Butkus did with the Bears. You kind of need to be involved in this day and age to keep the buzz going. Other than his divorce and his house being for sale he is a ghost to Chicago. LeBron can come in with Rose stock as low as it could possibly get. At this point Rose would be second fiddle to Lebron.
