Sox vs Twins April 2 game thread
Boy I wish the White Sox had someone on the bench that could hit a little better than Flowers as that would be a nice spot for it. Flowers swing is very loooooooong

Didn't Jones have issues to begin last season as well and was on the verge of being sent down?

Has Dunn gotten a ball out of the infield? The pop foul was close Monday but these are the guys he should be making decent contact on.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Apr 2, 2014 -> 12:08 PM) So you'll agree with me in a couple weeks when it's clear this is a firm platoon that it was a terrible idea? Why would a platoon be a terrible idea? Putting a young player in a position to succeed seems to work fairly well.

2014 TV thread
3 episodes into House of Cards and the Kevin Spacey accent kind of grates on me from time to time. I also can not decide if Robin Wright is hot or I just think she is supposed to be hot. Other than that I think I will really like it.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Apr 1, 2014 -> 12:52 PM) Yep. Exactly. Don't watch the show but it seems to me there never really was a game plan for ending the show and working the mother in? The show denied everything kind of like Lost and then ended in a way that it should have worked toward for a few seasons.

AND THAT'S A WHITE SOX WINNER!!!!
You want to see a slow swing, Tyler Flowers, he was god awful. Dunn did not get the ball out of the infield. Security was tight at the park as there was a rumor floating in the Chicago Police Department that Obama may be attending the game.

Matt Lindstrom is the closer
While not well versed on the statistical workings of Matt Lindstrom he looked pretty good yesterday. That slider will get out a ton of lefties.

QUOTE (IlliniKrush @ Mar 25, 2014 -> 11:35 AM) So you think you find a 2nd line center to try...then you move your 2nd line winger to the 3rd. Without Kane, we need production out of Sharp. Can't leave him with Handzus. Either try it with TT or stack the first line. I think the Handzus line is the second line but that is beside the point. Not sure why they think Handzus needs to be with scorers as he does nto seem to help them score . Also Regin went from second line center to fourth line winger really quick.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Mar 23, 2014 -> 09:59 AM) Anyone still going with Vikings? I was glad to see Logatha and Bjorn back. I can't wait to see what happened to the Priest. Trying to find time saw a couple last year and liked it.

2014 Cubs Catch-All Thread
I think there is some fluff in touting of Theo and the cub system but I think there are a couple of really good options down there. The steal will be Olt who seems to have gotten everything right again. The issue in Chicago that I have is that these guys are being spoken of as sure fire can't miss guys. With hitters there is always a risk that any small flaw can catch up to them. Baez made 44 errors last year.

QUOTE (thxfrthmmrs @ Mar 18, 2014 -> 11:02 AM) Don't think PJax can turn that franchise overnight, but if he can start making moves at the beginning of the offseason to steer them toward the right direction, it will be enough to convince Melo to stay. Has Phil Jackson ever constructed a roster? I suppose he can learn from Michael Jordan on how to go about building a franchise.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Mar 15, 2014 -> 09:36 AM) Yeah, I can't tell if they are floating until the playoffs, or just don't have that extra spark this year. The black hole at second line center is massive along with the fact bickell sucks.

Real good move if he can stay on the field. First time Peanut should put on a pair of shoulder pads is the opening game. I wonder if the Peanut to free safety talk will be had.

Missing Malaysian Airliner thread
The confusing thing to me is why is this stuff coming out so many days later. I am curious as to how often these things are turned off and how unless it is in tact at he bottom of the Indian Ocean is there no signal from something (i.e. blackbox).

QUOTE (bmags @ Mar 12, 2014 -> 04:03 PM) My friend is a huge Browns fan and I seriously feel so terrible for him. Is there a team more comparable to the KC Chiefs? They have everything but good coaching and a good QB and they have done nothing to correct that. Chiefs have a pretty good coach.

It's cold outside
QUOTE (HickoryHuskers @ Mar 12, 2014 -> 01:22 PM) Winter weather history: 21 years ago today, a massive winter storm hit the entire eastern third of the country. I was on my way back to South Bend from Spring Break in Florida. We hit heavy wind and snow just north of Atlanta. Near Chattanooga, the driver's side windshield wiper snapped off--not just the blade but the entire arm. We found a service station that switched the still-functional passenger side wiper over to the driver's side. We left Chattanooga less than an hour before police shut down the interstates going in and out of Chattanooga. We drove through a blizzard, on a curvy and hilly interstate, with one windshield wiper. Possibly the dumbest thing I've ever done. I was stuck in Alabama for three days.

Investing Thread
QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Mar 12, 2014 -> 12:34 PM) At that level, he could potentially be considered a sophisticated investor (this is a LEGAL term, not making a subjective judgment), and he could in theory enter into some hedge funds. But the reality is, there simply are no reliable outliers from the simple concept of risk versus return. Hedge Funds, even really good ones, can tank in a hurry and then those people lose a LOT. Same with any individual stock. Stock funds or ETF's and the like, the potential returns are more subdued, but with significantly less risk (and still can make good money if you invest smartly). Or you can buy bonds and make small returns with minimal risk. The key is horizon. A 10 year horizon is long-term investing. That means, probably, a diversified group of funds/ETF's are that person's best bet, IMO. Did you not read SS2K5's post just a little ways up? The markets have gone crazy the last few years, with immense gains. Now, if you are talking employment and adjusted wages, that is a different issue. Last two years S&P is up 24%. A diversified portfolio would be up 17%. While the middle class (which I am part of) has wage and employment issues. Retirement funds (401(k)'s are doing just fine).
