National Day of Prayer
General welfare + interstate commerce + 14th amendment = unlimited federal power, pretty much. But all of those other cases are clearly distinct from issues directly applicable to the 1st amendment. Going with the Lemon Test, what possible secular purpose does a NDoP serve?

White Sox @ Rangers
Turned on the game to find it already 0-5 in the bottom of the first. It's not even May and I don't give a crap about this team any more this year.

The Democrat Thread
Well, yeah, there's that part, but even the basic point of "lawn care mexicans are legal immigrants" is retarded.
-
The Democrat Thread
LOL. Because dishwashers, chefs and the lawn service industry aren't largely illegal immigrants?

QUOTE (kapkomet @ Apr 27, 2010 -> 08:49 PM) And that's different then now how? They couldn't demand proof of citizenship before.

National Day of Prayer
QUOTE (CrimsonWeltall @ Apr 27, 2010 -> 08:28 PM) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lemon_v._Kurtzman and The Lemon Test would be the obvious reference. The National Day of Prayer fails prongs 1 and 2. That being said, the Supreme Court by their own admission applies Lemon very inconsistently and a lot of the stuff which is vague or 'traditional' doesn't get knocked down, probably because it's not worth the controversy. They skirt around that by coming up with "secular tradition" arguments that are transparent crap, but they make them anyway.

It's the problem with populism, imo. Everyone shouts the high-level slogans; "Cut taxes!" "Balanced budget!" "Cut spending!" But when you get down into the details, no one actually wants to cut anything major or figure out increase tax revenues to pay for it.

Arizona requires you to carry your papers
Yes, but we all know the numerous ways they accomplish that. Burnt out taillight, tinted windows, etc.

This law is as race-neutral as voting literacy test laws.

If You Can't Afford Surgery In The US
QUOTE (Y2HH @ Apr 27, 2010 -> 08:18 AM) I absolutely understand the number of uninsured people will fall because of this law. But that's ALL this law accomplishes. It did nothing to curb the rising costs of medical care or prescription drugs. NOTHING. Also, insurance companies can STILL raise their premiums whenever and however they want. They simply cannot raise them excessively without justification. However, it's easy to justify that you need to raise them BECAUSE THE COST OF MEDICAL CARE AND DRUGS CONTINUED TO SKYROCKET. It's pretty simple. In the end, nothing was done. Even if that's the only thing this law does, it's still a good thing.

Arizona requires you to carry your papers
QUOTE (Tex @ Apr 27, 2010 -> 07:22 AM) Yep, 14 people in a van not speaking English is a routine thing here. The cops will spend all their time pulling over my neighbors and no time on anything else. It was an excellent (if entirely accidental) exhibition of exactly why these types of laws are ineffective and, more often than not, racist.

If You Can't Afford Surgery In The US
What?! Americans go to foreign countries for medical treatments?! But I thought Euroweenies coming over here was proof that affordable health care SOCIALISM is a failure and that the free market of America triumphs over all!

QUOTE (Tex @ Apr 27, 2010 -> 07:14 AM) So speaking English will help assure your rights as a citizen? Yeah I like that one. Really brings out the spirit of the bill, no?

Evidence, please. Most of the "hard left" in this country are pissed off at Obama for various reasons.
-
The Democrat Thread
kap, of course there is a political spectrum. Obama is "left" on that spectrum in the US, but he'd be moderate-right in a lot of other countries. That doesn't mean we redefine the word socialism, though.

National Day of Prayer
It's endorsing the idea of prayer and religion.

National Day of Prayer
I think a good test of whether or not it is intended as an endorsement of religion is the way people react when it's discussed.

Films Thread
QUOTE (knightni @ Apr 25, 2010 -> 02:11 AM) They had special scenes for IMAX and the movie in itself is ideal for large screen viewing, IMO. The IMAX shots of Chicago were amazing, but it's still a great film on my 40" screen at home.

Yeah, squeeze and hold the rep in a position with a lot of resistance. Think of the Static Arm Curls as an example. Finally got some weights for the tricep kickback exercises. I couldn't keep my form at all with the bands. Yoga today. I've discovered that I'm probably the least-flexible person on the planet.

GT: SEA @ CWS, 4/24, 3:10pm
QUOTE (mcgrad70 @ Apr 24, 2010 -> 05:58 PM) I see no joy in this... The few games the Sox will win this year will be by the homerun. I would fire Guillen and Williams tonight. This is light years from a multi-dimensional offense. This doesn't make me think they're WS contenders all of a sudden, but you can't get joy from a good win?
