QUOTE (Hatchetman @ Jul 27, 2016 -> 10:09 AM) Assuming we stay the course and go for it again in 2017, 2018 looks kind of scary. They have only a handful of position players under control...Abreu, Eaton, Anderson, Saladino...that is a lot of holes to fill somehow. Collins, Engel, Michalzewski, and Sanchez should all be able to fill in holes by then. Catcher is the biggest concern right now with none under contract for next year and nothing in the minors that is going to be ready to contribute.

Another good start for Shields, shutting down one of the best offenses in baseball. Great game for trade value for Cabrera, Shields, and Robertson.

QUOTE (daggins @ Jul 27, 2016 -> 10:00 AM) If the Sox are serious about moving him, they'll listen on reasonable packages. If not, you'll keep hearing "starts with Betts/Bogaerts" through the weekend. I don't think he is going anywhere though. Yeah, I agree. He is very likely going to stay put at this point. No one really seems eager to meet Hahns demands and KW is probably a lot less interested in letting a trade happen while the team is in the middle of a winning streak no matter how futile it seems to most people.

QUOTE (Quinarvy @ Jul 26, 2016 -> 04:25 PM) Yeah. This is why I'm fine with keeping or trading them. They both could command huge ransom's. Or we still have them, which isn't a bad place to be. Its the place the franchise has been for the last three + seasons. Its not really a great place to be either.

QUOTE (ChiSox59 @ Jul 26, 2016 -> 01:59 PM) And watch Chris Beck start everything 5th day? No thanks. If they can get something useful, fine. Someone else's Erik Johnson and a low level flyer, ok. The sox have zero pitching depth, and unless they plan to unload one of Chris or Q, it is going to remain that way. Shields is getting paid by the Sox arguely less than what he is worth - so i repeat, don't just give him away. Who cares if Beck starts every fifth day? That would be ideal to have Beck, Turner, and Raunado in the rotation to finish the season. It gives you a chance to see whether they are players that are ever going to be of any value and if not, helps you catch the Twins and Braves in the reverse standings. If you are rebuilding, adding another type five pick to your new core of Collins, Anderson, Fulmer, and Rodon (plus whatever you pick up in deals) only can help in the long run. There is no benefit to finishing as a middle of the pack team.

QUOTE (Dunt @ Jul 26, 2016 -> 01:51 PM) In 130 IP, he has 4.55 ERA, 1.56 WHIP, 6.7 K/9, and 5.1 BB/9. In comparison, Spencer Adams, who was drafted in the same draft, has a 3.51 ERA, 1.27 WHIP, 7.3 K/9, and a 1.5 BB/9 in 284 IP and is currently in AA. From everything I've seen, not a lot of people regard Spencer Adams as that great of a prospect, so Im not even sure what I would consider Kolek. A guy that throws hard but has no control and despite his velo, doesnt strike out a lot of people? On top of that, he now has health problems? Not that interested. You think a top 100 prospect is not enough to get that the Sox got in a dumpster dive. That would be an ideal trade getting a guy with the upside of Kolek, for basically just a guy.
-
QUOTE (ChiSoxJon @ Jul 26, 2016 -> 11:52 AM) Although Kolek has awful stats and is now recovering from TJS I'd take a Gonzalez-Kolek swap in a heartbeat being that Gonzalez is a luxury and Kolek's prospect status I think Kolek ends up being another Frankie Montas, big bodied guy destined for the back of the bullpen if he can stay healthy.
-
Also wouldn't be surprised to see Shields moved again, he has been pretty good after his first three disastrous outings here. Contract is very affordable now.

QUOTE (ptatc @ Jul 26, 2016 -> 10:55 AM) Agreed. I can understand the reluctance of the front office to trade a pitcher many consider to have HOF potential. No matter who the get, they may be known for the people that traded away an HOF pitcher in his prime. I am sure the Indians were probably nervous about the same thing when they shipped Bartolo Colon to the Expos, but getting the guys they got back made that team competitive.
-
QUOTE (Y2JImmy0 @ Jul 26, 2016 -> 03:43 AM) Ptact thinks Sale is better because he has more wins though. Hp could a 7-8 guy be anywhere near as good as a 14-3 guy, right? I don't think he ever said it was because he has more wins. It is because Sale is a more dominant pitcher whereas Q is a lot more similar to Buerhle where the numbers are really good, but in general he is not considered an ace by the industry.
-
I would rather keep Q and deal Sale. 1. Sale is going to bring back a larger haul in a trade. 2. I believe Q has a much better chance to pitch well into his 30's than does Sale. His style seems to be built for longevity more like a Maddux than a Verlander. 3. I think Sale is a higher risk to sustain a career altering injury, based on mechanics and DL time in their careers. 4. I think the package that Sale would bring back could make the team competitive while Q is still under his current contract.

QUOTE (NCsoxfan @ Jul 25, 2016 -> 11:11 AM) I hate hate hate that I see some talks on this board and other places that a fair deal for Q won't include Moncada or a major piece from the ML roster. The guy is a legitimate ace that's under control for 4 more years. It's almost like now some are itching to trade him for the he!! of it. A package of Benintendi, Kopech, and other prospects not named Moncada is a bad deal on paper for us. That is wayyy too light. I really hope Hahn doesn't budge here. http://www.thepointofpittsburgh.com/pirate...-jose-quintana/ Pirates blog think a one for one trade of Quintana for Meadows is an overpay. Fangraphs has Q as 25 and Moncada 26 in trade value. You could likely get Moncada, but you wouldn't be able to get the quantity of quality prospects that you could with using Beninrendi as the headliner.

QUOTE (kitekrazy @ Jul 24, 2016 -> 12:06 PM) The problem with many of these speculated trade packages is that they offer pitchers. That's what they don't need and seem to do well on their own. Unless the Sox can dump Ja. I say nein to Ja starting. They are definitely going to need pitching if they are giving up Sale and Q. Your rotation next year if they are both traded is Shields-Rodon-Fulmer-Raunado-Turner/Beck. They didn't get anyone this year that is going to contribute as a starting in the next couple of seasons. You need to get at least two pitchers back for Sale and Q and hope that two of the four can be mid rotation types or better.

QUOTE (SouthSideSale @ Jul 22, 2016 -> 05:51 PM) @aycockonxion According to a source, the White Sox have told the Astros that Sale is only available if they include Correa. LOL yup That's where they should start. They have no reason to move him right now so you are going to need to "wow" them.

QUOTE (ChiSoxFanMike @ Jul 22, 2016 -> 04:55 PM) I have no interest in Texas' package. Give me Boston's or Houston's offer instead. I would much prefer what Texas could offer to Houston. A deal around Profar, Tate, and Mazara would trump whatever Houston would offer.

Considering what quality closers have gone for, I could see them pulling in a guy like Owens or Swihart along with a couple A ball guys.

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Jul 11, 2016 -> 06:10 PM) When considering a rebuild, one factor is the competition. Right now Cleveland looks good, but not exactly a juggernaut. The Sox are right with KC and Detroit with Minnesota taking up the rear. There is no team that you would say is anywhere near unbeatable. That is I'm reason why I wouldn't trade Chris Sale for a package of guys I hope is,as,good as Chris Sale some day. I really think so,e want the Sox to rebuild for the built in minimum 3 years of constant complaining. Cleveland is primed to stay competitive though given where their farm system is at. The Tigers will outspend the division to get a chance to win as long as Ilitich is there, the Royals will likely regress to a middle of the pack team over the next couple of seasons with no more money to spend on pitching, the Twins are in the midst of their own rebuilding and are probably two years away from competing when Gordon, Jay, Berrios, Gonzavles, Stewart, and Walker all come up. Add in a top 3 pick next season and a couple shrewd trades and they will be set up to compete when they finally get out from under Mauers contract. The bigger issue with Sale is, by the time you get a team around him that can compete, he will be gone in FA and the Sox will be in the same situation, without Sale and unable to compete. The Sox are in a position where they need to turn one of their few high value assets into a lot of assets to fill the many holes on the team.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jul 11, 2016 -> 03:55 PM) That is a mighty impressive way of glossing over the 25% haircut the team took at the gates the year after the big rebuild started. If you go into full rebuild mode you are likely looking at more than 25% savings in roster expenses. Moving Cabrera, Robertson, and Frazier and replacing them with Coats, Webb, and Davidson would more than save 25% of gate that would be lost. Also given that the Sox are making over $100M ($51M local, $52M national), in TV money before they sell a ticket, ad, or parking spot, they could more than handle a dip in attendance during a rebuild.
-
I think this team is going to be stuck in the middle again this season, to close to contending to sell and too far out to make and big moves to make a run.

QUOTE (BaseballNick @ Jul 7, 2016 -> 03:55 PM) Zach Remillard is one of only ten players drafted in the first ten rounds who hasn't signed according to SB Nation. I understand he was playing in the CWS and may need a break, but I really hope they sign him. He seems like a very well rounded player. I heard a radio interview he did, he said he and Morrison were both going to sign but the Sox told them to take some time off to decompress and re-charge after their run to the national championship.

QUOTE (SoxPride18 @ Jul 7, 2016 -> 01:36 PM) http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2016/07/carl...in-a-trade.html I think CarGo would be a great addition to the lineup. Wonder what it would take to get him here? You would have to start with Fulmer. Probably something like Fulmer, Guerrero, and Hawkins. -

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jun 22, 2016 -> 02:41 PM) And actually that gets me to thinking... I wonder if the big signing is one of the young Cubans? That was my thought as well. Most of the big ticket J2 kids have deals in place, which would lead you to believe it is likely a Cuban. -
I think you could add in a catcher in a deal with the Padres. Jay, Maurer (former Sox target), and Bethancourt or Norris for a package around Fulmer and Engel. Padres need to clear the way for Hedges any way.

QUOTE (Special K @ Jun 24, 2016 -> 10:25 AM) How much again did we pay per year for the privilege of those 2? $4 million? Had we allocated that on a per year basis to someone like Gordon, perhaps it would've made the difference. Would be fine with Flowers in that instance. You are paying them what you would have had to pay Flowers.
