  1. QUOTE(sox4lifeinPA @ Aug 11, 2007 -> 04:13 PM) ok, I just heard the lamest thing in the world...... This woman is standing in line describing an e-vite she got for a "Paw-ty" for her dog. 25 pets are invited from a puppy play group and will get together with their animals for butt sniffing and feces tasting. (I added the last part) seriously, if you think that's a great idea....you're lame. If a woman invited me to that party, I'd be there in an instant. I also agree it's lame.
  2. QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Aug 9, 2007 -> 09:09 PM) That's not a smart idea anymore. The 10/22 laws mean they can take money out of your account instantly, instead of when the bank is presented with the check. Not every place does that. I was listening to someone in line ask around if the store we were in does the "instant thingy" or the "regular way".
  3. Not certain about Lotus Notes, but here is how someone did a "work around" in gmail, (also works in Yahoo, Hotmail, etc.)
  4. Any moment I spend thinking about her is a giant waste of my time. But as well all know, I'm basically always willing to waste a few minutes . . .
  5. Best use for any Apple product . . . I kid because I care™
  6. Master tactician whose job placed him on the bleeding edge of those tactics. Like him or hate him, candidates on both sides of the aisle will be emulating some of his ideas for years to come. It sickens me whenever high profile political figures leave under these terms. It erodes the public trust and hurts us all, whether or not he plays for your team.
  7. I will be setting up a new home network and started reviewing routers. I am leaning towards a Wireless-N and noticed that they are offering ones that will allow a USB hard drive to hook in. Nothing I am planning on using now. I also am looking at a wire less print sharing hookup. Basically it will be in a 1,000 sq foot duplex with two laptops and possibly a Linux based desktop. The two desktops are running VISTA and XP. The internet link will most likely be via cable, but possibly DSL.

QUOTE(Soxy @ Aug 10, 2007 -> 03:01 PM) On normal days I use Lever 2000. On days when I want to smell extra nice I use either this or this. You are soooo cool
  9. Make the trade and who cares if it helps them. Some people still roast the Sox for the Sosa trade and vice versa for Garland. Everyone will get over it.
  10. btw, we have a whole thread of these . . .

    Laptop Help

I've been using Vista without any issues. The more I use it the more I am liking some of the little and not so little features. What throws me more is when a certain web site upgrades and I have to relearn for like the 10th time board commands and the f***ing green font machine isn't easy to use.
  12. Just look a few posts up for someone who believes there is scientific fact to believe in. The more I studied evolution, the mosr questions arise. I think many people adopt a "I am not religious, so I will believe in Science" without understanding the gaps and leaps of faith of either.
  13. QUOTE(NorthSideSox72 @ Aug 10, 2007 -> 07:52 AM) I have researched this with ComEd (for you Illinois folks). IN 2008, they will start offering an energy choice program, where you can buy your power from alternate sources. I have no more details than that just yet, though. Last we looked, your evil monopoly was cheaper than Texas open choices. I believe this was when Com Ed was doing some community charity thing that some people objected to.
  14. QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Aug 9, 2007 -> 07:15 PM) Great little blurb from Jerry Crasnick a few years back. Balta, as a scientist you know there could be other factors as well that were not looked into. An anomaly with the bat or ball. Wind gusts, etc. Not to defend Bonds, but I can be very suspicious of anecdotal research presented as fact.

    Laptop Help

Over the past 10 years I've used every major brand and found stuff I loved and hated with each one. So find one that you think you will like. My son just went over to the dark side and bought a Mac. I'm not enthralled with the keyboard, but it seems like a solid machine. Currently I have a Dell desktop repalcement E1705. Giant laptop display. If I had to do it over again, I would have saved a few dollars on the laptop and gone with a smaller display and bought a 17" LCD display and went with a dual display set up. The smaller screen would be nice when sitting at Moon Beans sipping coffee and checking my email.

  17. QUOTE(FlaSoxxJim @ Aug 9, 2007 -> 05:38 PM) Faith in the slow but steady step-wise process fo scientific inquiry, sure, but no need for faith in the knowledge that there is some goal-oriented grand plan of Grand Planner. The "but what are the chances. . . " arguments often used (I'm not saying you are here) to suggest a need for a plan or a Planner is a logical fallacy. If we use a conservative estimate of 10^22 stars in the universe and allow that most of those stars have planet sassociated with them, then the number of times the universe has had to get the in the "exact right proportions, under the exact right conditions" is staggeringly large. Our planet is at least one of the pinpoints in the universe where the right conditions and elemental components converged and it seems so miraculous as to require a Planner. But the universe has had billions upon billions upon billions of chances to roll the dice and mix and match variables and that kind of replication obviates the need for divine explanations. Not saying there is or isn't a divine planner, that's a much differnt argument that isn't worth debating here. What I am pointing out is many people believe there is scientific proof of the beginning of life, and there isn't. There is a theory, but at this point in time, it can not be proven. So it takes faith to believe either in a random series of events coming together to create this great diversity of life, or faith to believe in a bigger than us planner. The choice is simple for most people. But either side you believe in, it is a matter of faith, not scientific fact.
  18. QUOTE(santo=dorf @ Aug 9, 2007 -> 04:17 PM) No, they believe creationism isn't part of the scientific method. Yes it takes faith to believe in somthing as complex as the creation of life, but it sure helps your cause when you have factual, scientific evidence to support your beliefs. For science to accept a fact, I believe, it has to be repeatable. So far we haven't created life. Imagine that primordial soup and all the variety of life that emerged. Amazing. You don't think it takes faith to believe that all that stuff could somehow be placed together in the exact right proportions, under the exact right conditions, for life to begin? There has to be a beginning of time. Matter was created somehow. Why? How? Since no one alive was there, it takes faith to believe in whatever you believe.
  19. QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Aug 7, 2007 -> 06:27 PM) Why does anyone who is under 50 still write checks? The float. I can't recall the last time I wrote a check.
  20. QUOTE(BigSqwert @ Aug 9, 2007 -> 04:30 PM) Which part of Texas are you in? I don't think Illinois offers this. Am I mistaken? I am in the Rio Grande Valley, about 60 miles from the Gulf and 20 miles from Mexico. I'm not certain if Illinois does or doesn't. We have dozens of retail energy providers who basically have to buy it from the lines and wires guys and resell. We're at about .15/kwh today.

We haven't had one of these in a while. I recently converted to liquid.
  22. QUOTE(Kid Gleason @ Aug 9, 2007 -> 03:30 PM) That's just not true. I've heard many a great band thanks to college radio and college programming. Though I never listen anymore, it is due to my living way out of range for many stations. Ok, you would be happier, but you really want to be the program director of your own personal station. You would still be ahead of the guys who do it for a living Nice discusion, btw
  23. As I was making my electric choice, I selected a plan that guaranteed that 100% of my electricity would be generated from wind. I'm paying a slight premium, but I feel it is the correct choice for me. Walk the talk and all that.
  24. My cousin Jeff is the founder of Hairbangers Ball, so I know cover bands I have no problem with guys who want to make a few bucks playing in a band. It's all about the entertainment for me. Not every musician can write music and not every writer can sing. Although it is cool when they happily coexist. I know when I turn on the radio, especially in a small market, I entered the WalMart of music. But that's cool. I don't have hours to waste to find that 10 minutes I'll really enjoy. Sell me the happy crap, I'll keep buying. And in the end, we'll both get what we want out of music. And nothing changes if the radio station starts playing obscure stuff. They are still showing the hubris to decide what I will like. No matter who does the programming for you, you will be unhappy. You want control of what you listen to. You will happily invest the time and resources to find those great tunes that I will miss. I'll spend that same time hiking down some sweaty trail and find a vista that touches my soul and keeps me human. And when we finally get together, over a few beers, I'll show you pictures of places you wouldn't otherwise see and you'll play some great rock I would have missed, and life is good
  25. QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Aug 9, 2007 -> 02:03 PM) Good summary of where the evolutionary tree stands after this here. Thank you for the link. That is a well written and illustrated piece.
