QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Apr 4, 2007 -> 06:11 AM) Its makes the functionality of government cheaper and more effecient. One language would prevent the government from having to duplicate services for the same information into many different languages. It would also stop the need for finding people who speak each of those languages to translate and provide that information. Heck it is hard enough to get a clean intelligent government worker to provide necesary information in English, you want to find someone to speak flawless Cantonese? Yikes. In a public setting you also lose that need for duplicity, plus one thing that comes to mind is language barrier in emergency situations. Say a new African immigrant (pick a country) just got hit by a car. Now let that person explain to you what hurts in your role as an ER doc, or a paramedic. Not saying it would be right or wrong, just saying it would make the government and private businesses a lot more effecient. All excellent reasons. Thank you.

Trying not to turn this into a flame, how does America benefit if everyone speaks English? I can easily see how having a bilingual population helps to compete in a global economy, but how does it improve America? How does it make our lives better if all immigrants spoke English?
-
yawn. I stopped paying attention to what Ozzie says.

QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Apr 3, 2007 -> 05:18 PM) Well not really. I don't know how I feel about forcing the rest of America to pick up the cost of immigration through higher taxes related to higher costs to service non-English speakers. But I do know that the idea of immigrants coming here and picking up English in 3 easy steps is a complete falsehood historically. Most immigrants tended to settle into areas of like speakers. They did not learn English as a rule. Their kids on the other hand DID learn English and were the ones to assimilate into America. The initial generation immigrants tended to congregate into areas where people already spoke their language, so the pressure to assimilate wasn't really there. If you don't believe me, look at neighborhood maps of older US cities, and tell me how many "Chinatowns", "Greektowns", "Germantowns" etc that you find. The ethnic neighborhoods were huge in the 19th century with the large immigrant waves. Great points. Living in an area that is 85% Hispanic and overwhelming Spanish speaking, I know first hand how easy it is to only speak Spanish here. Every business employees bi-lingual clerks because of all the tourists from Mexico who shop here.

According to Russia, a US attack on Iran is 'imminent'
Texsox replied to kapkomet's topic in The Filibuster
QUOTE(kapkomet @ Apr 3, 2007 -> 01:51 PM) I agree... but why is Russia parroting this crap? They still need our help and aid. It's the right thing to do. Notice they did toss a couple bones to the Iranians as being able to win. Any number of reasons. I am certain the Brits and Yanks knew that Russia would have the best chance to be heard and influence. -

I believe the comments were orchestrated by Britian and the US to put some pressure on the Iranians. But, hell, why bring those soldiers all the way home next year? Let's start another war and keep ridin' the storm out. slightly green until I realized it's crazy enough to be true. -
Final thought and I will probably shut up. Using the situations this law seeks to address; the current system, where a judge or jury decided the merits of a case, using the facts of that exact case, is fairer than a system that presupposes years in advance, all the facts of a case and that all cases are without merit. I just do not like cutting off access to our legal system to any innocent person.
-
We'll have to see the final language. The wording so far is so vague. "Good faith" is rather a messy term. But regardless of the language, the intent of the law is stopping innocent people from seeking redress in a court of law. I think we ought to be very cautious. The saving lives argument is a strong one. I just don't see this law as helping in that area. How many people would rather die than face a potential lawsuit? For this law to actually work the following scenario has to happen. A passenger sees something that looks suspicious to them. They decide that the risk of being in a lawsuit is greater than potentially dying, so they keep quiet. The person is actually a terrorist and blows up the plane. I just don't see that happening. I think the terrorists will be better trained as to not seem suspicious. I place more faith in metal detectors, screenings, and other security techniques, than someone being silenced because they fear a law suit.

Any bets as to how long until this happens here?

QUOTE(whitesoxfan101 @ Apr 3, 2007 -> 02:26 AM) The only true way to learn history is follow current events in your lifetime. All you can do in regards to events before that is study the past from different viewpoints and decide for yourself what actually happened. You'll never get a fair and balanced opinion on anything from anybody anymore, thus it's harder than ever to be educated, despite the fact it's easier than ever with modern technology to be intelligent. (I hope that made sense to SOMEBODY besides me). I believe you never could get a perfectly balanced and fair newscast. What would seem balanced and fair to Alpha Dog would appear conservatively biased to Rex and what Rex would find balanced and fair would seem ciased to Alpha Dog. And both would have Kap yelling GORACLE, IMPEACH BUSH -
QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Apr 3, 2007 -> 06:37 AM) So wait, are you saying that laws shouldn't change, or that we shouldn't have any new laws? I agree that the victims deserve more protection that they get in most cases. Besides, our great legal system actually has protections against the false accusations that Tex is more worried about than the potential dead people that everyone else is more worried about. There are statutes already against false accusing, perjury etc. There is no real protection for potential victims, only people who are already victims. And I don't know about you, but I have no desire to be the target of a fatwa. I have got to be honest here, I would actually be leary of reporting any strange activity of a person who looked to be a Muslim, because I would fear for my families lives if I did. I almost literally would have to see them placing a bomb or something before I would say something in this day and age. As soon as someone links to an attack that could have been prevented if someone wasn't afraid to speak up, your point about potential bombing victims makes sense. Funny it takes a lawsuit by an unpopular group to spark this. I wonder if it was a group of Methodist Pastors who were turned in by a group of Muslims if the same legislation would be enacted? (No need to answer this) Or at least we did before this legislation.

Isn't it interesting that as Sox fans, we aren't clammering to make English the official language of the team? If accepting any player who can make a contribution regardless of language, strengthens the team, wouldn't that also work for most businesses and then our country? Just tossing that out.

Just a small comment. I am certain you have a great reason to run your weight up to that level. Along the way, think of your workouts as a lifetime journey, and build it in a way that you can sustain throughout your life.

There are three things that can happen during the season. 1) The player's value goes up. 2) The player's value goes down. 3) The player's value stays the same. The contract negotiations could make the player A) Feel better and motivated. B) Stay the same. C) Feel unwanted and perhaps distracted. The Good: 1A, 1B The Bad: 1C, 2A, 2B, 2C The Ordinary: 3B
