A dude has to eat . . . I like some of the changes I had a job in the great northwest Working at Starbucks for a spell But I loved that coffee all too much And one day the ax just fell. So I drifted down to New Orleans Where I happened to be employed Workin' for a while on a fishin' boat Right outside of Delacroix. But all the while I was alone The past was close behind, I seen a lot of women But she never escaped my mind, and I just grew Tangled up in blue.

Hey Mayor why didn't you deploy the buses before the storm during the evacuation?
-
QUOTE(Reddy @ Sep 2, 2005 -> 05:59 PM) i really hope that's superimposed btw i dont think anyone should be knocking the mayor - he's been working his ass off. the others - yes they should be verbally raped, but not the mayor. listen to the soundbytes, you'll agree right, how could anyone cry with the President singing to them

QUOTE(Gene Honda Civic @ Sep 2, 2005 -> 05:14 PM) I'd like to sing you a little song that my dear friend YASY wrote last night and posted oj Soxtalk To the tune of "The City of New Orleans" by Steve Goodman: Praying for the City of New Orleans, Hammered by that damned ol' hurricane If the wind and rain wasn't bad enough, The levee broke and in poured Ponchatrain. All in the southland jewel we knew The water keeps on coming through Rising up over houses, cars and stores. Flooding sites with well known names, Bourbon Street's flooded just the same So's the gravesite of old Marie Laveau. Please help us America, Where are you? Don't forget us we're your native sons, We are dying in The City of New Orleans, Another five hundred gone when the day is done. Suffling along with the old folks and the children. Where we going? Ain't no one got a clue. Dragging plastic bags holding our possessions Oh Lord, tell us, what're we gonna do?. Well, the cops are flat out helpless And the politicians too While ruthless gangs rob, rape, kill and steal. Mothers with their babes a-dying, While ducking all the bullets flying Thirsty scared and hungry is all we feel. Please help us America, Where are you? Don't forget us we're your native sons, We are dying in The City of New Orleans, Another five hundred gone when the day is done. Nighttime in The City of New Orleans, There's no future here that I can see. Way it's goin', we'll be dead by morning This Louisiana nightmare it seems, will be the death of me. And all I saw today seems To fade into a bad dream And those in charge still ain't got a clue. The president spouts his crap again, The refugees will keep on dyin'. This place's got the disappear-in-history blues. So tell us, America, Where were you? You forsaked us, each and every one. I'm the place they called The City of New Orleans, But after two hundred years or so, I'm gone.

Nice sound bite Jesse. I doubt someone who is trapped in their attic gives a rip what color the rescuer or the leadership is. Meanwhile, out in the country Linked here

QUOTE(Kid Gleason @ Sep 2, 2005 -> 02:52 PM) I miss all of the Ken Griffey talk. Do you think we could get him on board the SL&P section of the board? Or are we just not allowed to draft him in any way? I mean, I'm willing to make a few phone calls to see if he could come on over to our board and post. I can think of a few posters I would be willing to trade. Can't get him but how about McGruff the crime dog?

QUOTE(Kid Gleason @ Sep 2, 2005 -> 02:35 PM) O.K., I stand corrected on his being the first to use the race issue. I apologize for being wrong. But Moore is still an ass. I wasn't trying to prove you wrong, just pointing out this happens from the very first rain drops. Race is always the undercurrent of all things in this society. Some citizens will tell you, with 100% certainty in their convictions, that if those were white people on their roofs, help would have come sooner. Some citizens will tell you, again with 100% certainty in their convictions, that if those were white people on their roofs, help would have come in the same amount of time. Sadly some would also say that white people wouldn't have shot at helicopters, would have evacuated, would not have looted, and all sorts of nonsense like that.

I've heard of more problems with private deals than dealerships, although obviously there are good and bad deals from both. Turned back odometers, temporary repairs, etc. Be smart and do your research and add up all the payments.

QUOTE(Steff @ Sep 2, 2005 -> 02:31 PM) If he could only find a way to do so without being such a s***. Then he would be an anonymous hack without and audience :headshake

QUOTE(Kid Gleason @ Sep 2, 2005 -> 02:27 PM) And there it is. Thanks for being the first person to bring race into this Mike. You self-serving piece of s***. Nope, that's been happening for a couple days. http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/conte...0102305_pf.html http://www.cnn.com/2005/POLITICS/09/02/bla...s.ap/index.html

I really dislike it when someone with an obvious extreme political agenda actually has some decent ammunition to fire. He does do a nice job of listing what happened. It just doesn't seem fair to blame Bush this much for the problem. But much like Bilandic had his snow storm, Bush has this. I now have a better understanding of those 3rd world relief efforts and how a small number of citizens make things worse for the majority.

Dear James, Imagine surviving a terrible storm like Katrina and then having nowhere to go home. The Federal Emergency Management Agency and the Red Cross are scrambling to find shelter for the displaced. At least 80,000 people are competing for area shelters, and countless more are in motels, cars, or wherever they can stay out of the elements. Our fellow Americans need help and they need somewhere to go. Yesterday, Moveon.org Civic Action launched an emergency project to help hurricane victims in desperate need of a place to stay. Today, the johnkerry.com community is joining in this vitally important neighbor-helping-neighbor effort. http://www.hurricanehousing.org Housing is most urgently needed within reasonable driving distance (about 300 miles) of the affected areas in the Southeast, especially New Orleans. Many members of our community have already generously responded to the call for emergency donations to the American Red Cross and other charities working on the ground to help people whose lives have been torn apart. Now, we have still another way to help. Please forward this message to anyone you know in the region who might be able to help. Tens of thousands of people whose lives and homes have been devastated now face the daunting question of where to go next -- and we can reach out to them. We are joining this emergency national housing drive to connect empty beds with hurricane victims who desperately need a place to wait out the storm. If you can offer help, the process is simple: * You can sign up to become a host by posting a description of whatever housing you have available, along with contact information. You can change or remove your offer at any time. * Hurricane victims, local and national relief organizations, friends and relatives can search the site for housing. Many shelters actually already have Internet access, but folks without 'net access can still make use of the site through case workers and family members. * Hurricane victims or relief agencies will contact hosts and together decide if it's a good match and make the necessary travel arrangements. The host's address is not released until a particular match is agreed on. If hosting doesn't work for you, please consider donating to the Red Cross to help with the enormous tasks of rescue and recovery. You can give online at: Donate to the Red Cross This is a time for America to come together. And today, two of the largest and most active online communities in the nation -- Moveon.org Civil Action and johnkerry.com -- are working side-by-side to help in any way we can. There are thousands of families who have just lost everything and need a place to stay dry. Let's do what we can to help. http://www.hurricanehousing.org Thanks for being there for families in urgent need of your immediate help. Please keep the people of the Gulf Coast in your thoughts and prayers. Sincerely, John Kerry

QUOTE(southsideirish71 @ Sep 2, 2005 -> 01:24 PM) So lets take some guns and shoot at the people helping us. That helps out the relief effort. I guess they are hoping that someone will take them to safety at gunpoint? Dumb

I've been trying to figure out why anyone could be so evil as to fire on an aid helicopter. What screwed up thinking. :headshake Grandma I got some food, a single MRE for all 7 of them. I just can't read anymore.

On a small scale, how you survive a disaster or life threatening situation, is your attitude. I believe that is magnified on this scale. A very big part of what President Bush can do today is ease fears. He can assure the victims that are fearing physical violence that he is taking action and that criminals will be dealt with. He can boost the moral of the workers and volunteers that are working around the clock in filth and death. He can look the directors and the government people in the eye and say, Do it! In this case he is a cheerleader and damn important one. People who are not fearful, who are confident, or at the minimum hopeful, will make it through a lot better than the others.

QUOTE(Queen Prawn @ Sep 2, 2005 -> 12:23 PM) Reddy and Tex - deep breaths. We are all on the same side here. I'm cool. I believe most people here know I am a kind and sensitive person who does not downplay human tragedy. I'm not going to trot out my volunteer resume as some sort of badge of honor but my conscious is clear. But thanks for the advice.
-
QUOTE(Reddy @ Sep 2, 2005 -> 12:18 PM) not true man, it just seems to me that you've been trying to downplay the seriousness of whats going on down there. and you have been - saying that killing etc happens anyway. i'm pretty sure ANARCHY doesnt happen on a regular basis is NO In what post? I've been pointing out that while the negative gets the headlines, we should also know that thousands of volunteers, like yourself, are working around the clock to help people. That humans are for the most part, generous and peaceful, and come together in a tragedy. If you wish to think that the looters are the norm, go for it. But out of the 500,000+ effective, do you believe there are 100,000 muggers, snipers, and rapists? 250,000? And yes, I did mention these crimes will happen tonight in Chicago. Trying to show a little context. These are in many cases the same criminals that would have been committing violent crimes without a hurricane. To believe that the hurricane, and the aftermath, turned law abiding persons suddenly into rapists and murderers is wrong. It did turn law abiding persons into petty thieves if you believe taking water and food off store shelves to survive is stealing.

QUOTE(Reddy @ Sep 2, 2005 -> 12:14 PM) dude, my school, Loyola Chicago - is opening its doors to students from Loyola New Orleans. they'll be sleeping in my dorm. i'm not blocking that s*** out I'M DOING IT. And if I posted that you would have said so WTF?

QUOTE(Reddy @ Sep 2, 2005 -> 12:03 PM) guys what the hell? ok fine maybe their are FEWER bad guys than good, but it's still a disgusting and horrible situation where there are bands of men driving around in trucks with f***ING AK-47s shooting at police and choppers. there are boddies riddled with bullet holes, ppl with their heads shot off. i cant believe you guys are treating it like it's just another news story edit: can ya tell im in that dark place too right now? Just another news story? I am not. What I do know, as someone that puts a lot of hours in every year as a volunteer, that during a crisis, volunteers are everywhere and doing a hell of a lot more than posting on a message board. What you have decided to block out are the individuals that have opened their homes to shelter people. People who have taken in strangers and given them rides. People sharing their resources. Those stories are as much about this as the criminals. And I don't think I have to remind anyone here that those same crimes happened in NO before the hurricane. People were getting killed, drugs deals, stealing. That's happening in Chicago tonight. National Geographic had this one pegged a long time ago.

QUOTE(Reddy @ Sep 2, 2005 -> 11:41 AM) tex listen to this: http://www.cnn.com/2005/US/09/02/katrina.nagin/index.html listen to the link i think this guy will know whether there are ppl helping more than you would (not to be taken offensively) but i'm just saying that to downplay the seriousness of the situation is foolish I'm not certain which comment this came from. Looking across the region, from San Antonio eastward, there are organizations after organizations trying their best to offer aid and comfort. I know of a convoy that left here two days ago loaded with portable cook stations fueled by propane, to help where they could. Basically they left without a destination, and a phone bank of volunteers calling to see where they should go. They are heading to Dallas and possibly into LA. The looters get on the 5:00 news, but there are far more angels than devils.
-
There are literally tens of thousands of situations like "what if the NO levee is breeched or gets a direct hit." and we do not have the resources to address them all. There are "overall" responses that are drilled and practiced. Like a hurricane hit, but not specific to anyone town or region. And while we are seeing images of a few looters and criminals, there are literally hundreds of volunteers for each idiot. There are thousands of people helping each other not hurting each other. The human spirit always comes through. As I have combed through some news stories and blogs you read about people sharing, offering aid, protecting each other.
