Waste not, want not... the 2006 Highway bill
QUOTE(mreye @ Aug 3, 2005 -> 10:24 AM) Yes. See, I think my Federal taxes should be minimum and my state taxes should be more. The downside is our economy benefits from a great interstate road system. When a manufacturer in Boise needs to get a shipment to a distributor in Detroit, it all has to work together. As long as that is kept intact, I don't care how the money and oversite is divided up. You would be shifting the pork to a state level. You might have some wonderfully untravelled roads downstate while the Chicago suburbs get shafted, depending on the clout of the state reps. GOP = downstate projects DEM = Chicago

How'd you find this place?
Someone, and I thought it was Southsider, but he denies it, (I don't blame him) sent me the link over at ESPN. He thought I actually knew something about baseball and would add to the conversation. Silly fool.

Waste not, want not... the 2006 Highway bill
QUOTE(mreye @ Aug 3, 2005 -> 09:47 AM) See, I believe the states should only receive highway money for Federal Interstates. But we pay a federal road tax when we buy gasoline. We pay that tax wether we drive on interstate highways or not. Unless you are also proposing having the feds send that money to the state (and being from a huge ass state, I's agree) we are stuck with this system. Isn't it nice to see what our elected leaders can do when they work together?

Waste not, want not... the 2006 Highway bill
The biggest fight in my corner of the world was how the Rio Grande Valley would fit in. The two options, IIRC, were Laredo to Harlingen (spur to Brownsville) and up and having separate spurs from Laredo and the Rio Grande Valley connecting near Rte 37/281/77. It is huge for us. The second project, and could well be called pork, is a second major east-west route. Currently there is one highway connecting the area. The major growth is being stalled somewhat because of the business needs to be near the highway. A second, northern route, would open a lot of land for economic development. A study of other cities and metropolitan areas have all concluded that this type of "loop" have been done much sooner than the RGV would have theirs.

Mariotti vs. Scoop Jackson
I love that night. Sorry Busty Daker, you have not lived up to the hype and Chicagoans are going to trash ya. Duh, welcome to the Windy City and the sometimes not Friendly Confines.

Waste not, want not... the 2006 Highway bill
QUOTE(mreye @ Aug 3, 2005 -> 09:39 AM) If it's "in the 5 fastest growing areas" it must be generating tax dollars. Why can't the state handle the road projects? The biggest need is a major transportation link from Mexico to Canada. It has been in the planning stages for about 8 or 9 years, and portions of existing roadways have been improved to meet national standards.Because the route winds through 6 or 7 states, it must be a national project. http://www.keeptexasmoving.com/projects/i69/

Good to be the King
I am quickly becoming more and more critical of the UN. I embrace the idea of a "all nations" gathering, but I am beginning to believe it may be time to shut this one down and start over. When Rush starts making sense to me on any topic, I'm frightened, but I'm starting to lean towards his kernal of truth, but not the hyperbole.

Waste not, want not... the 2006 Highway bill
I am wondering if a key big of asphalt, the new I69 project that would link Laredo with Canada is among the projects. There are a couple much needed roadways down by me. The area has been in the five fastest growing sreas for the past 10 years without much new road construction.

Biggest American superband ever...
I spun off into some blues and this is probably a giant duh to y'all music experts, but Red House by Hendrix is blowing me away. I can not believe I have never heard this before. I'm reacquainting myself with Howlin Wolf, Hooker, KoKo, BB, Muddy, Stevie, Sonny Boy, side trip to Billie Holiday (Greatest Female Vocalist Ever?), Bessie What's really cool is a great blues bar is only about 1000 miles away in the Mississippi Delta

What music makes you homesick?
I don't listent to the blues very often, but when I do hear some Howlin Wolf, BB King, Muddy Waters, etc. I get so damn homesick. Right now I'm listening to BB King's The Thrill is Gone and just dying to be back up north. I've got to find a weekend free.

How could we forget Steam? Driving down a farm to market road, 80 mph, and that song came on the radio. I thought of this thread right away.

Biggest American superband ever...
I would just like to thank everyone in this thread for sharing their passion in music. I'm off to Barnes and Noble and the other less than special music stores in McAllen. Gotta load up on some stuff I haven't given a listen to in a long time. Jim, Kid, et. al.

White Sox Acquire Blum
QUOTE(CaliSoxFanViaSWside @ Jul 31, 2005 -> 10:38 PM) Don't forget Blum is a switch-hitter too. What he does in the privacy of his own home . . . This may win us an extra game. I like ChiSoxFn's opinion. The gap stayed the same between us and every other team. We didn't lose any ground. He's pretty smart, maybe he should start his own web site.

Boy Scout Jamboree...
The biggest problem would be guys like me, in uniform, with all the pretty awards, booing the President.
