  2. There are still some unanswered questions with this team. I believe teams that have a tradition of being in the playoffs have an advantage, even if the individual players have not been there before. Teams feels it. I remember my college cross country team won 10 of 11 conference titles. You bet when we went to the conference meets, even the Freshman carried themselves with a swagger. It's infectious. I questioned early how small ball would work when we lost our two best averages from last year. We do not have a .300 hitter. When was the last time a team won a playoff series w/o a .300 hitter? I don't know if it's important, but it seems strange.
  3. OMG, I know one of the families from the internet and a Scouting discussion list I belong to.
  4. QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Jul 26, 2005 -> 08:09 AM) He was complaining about USCF after being to Busch Stadium? This guy really is an idiot then. Busch stadium is a dump. It was one of the worst places I ever saw a ballgame. The fans were nice and smart, but I could never complain about our home park after seeing the s***hole that St Louis is. It is a round cookie cutter stadium, with a couple of extra things done to it. It is generic, the site lines suck, and the air doesn't move in it because there is not an openning for air to flow through. The only thing worse than watching a game in STL is eating the food at the ballpark. There was no choice, and it tasted like microwaved cardboard. After seeing a game there, I could not see why anyone would ever say they liked that place. His comparison was to the fans. The Sox fans were sitting on their hands, versus the Card fans cheering from the first inning. The word he used was "electricity". There was "electricity" in the air at Busch and he just didn't feel it at the Cell. Based on the games attended, I could believe that. Last I looked St. Louis was trailing just the Yankees and the Dodgers in attendance. We're middle of the pack. A factoid that is just that, a fact. What one makes of that is up to their opinion and bias. St. Louis fans are among the best I've been around while attending a game. The dump they play in makes it all the more amazing.
  5. QUOTE(NUKE_CLEVELAND @ Jul 26, 2005 -> 12:13 AM) No but you certainly could expect to be questioned in any country when you wear a heavy jacket in the middle of summer. Or if you go to Brazil and sweat when it's only 95 degrees. The free world is winning the war on terror when there is an open season on people wearing coats. God forbid you should be wearing a heavy jacket in the Dallas airport in January when it's 70 degrees here and -10 where you are flying to. people screaming, police running, look he's wearing a jacket!, he's a terrorist. Remember, guilty until proven innocent. There are suicide bombers everywhere. More people will die today from alchohol and tobacco related disease. We don't ban those, but live in fear that someone wearing a jacket is a bomber. :headshake We're winning!
  6. I heard it and it wasn't as bad as reported. He attended the Cards game the day before and if anyone hasn't been to a Cards game, it is intense. They really rock their park. Heading to the Cell during a bad game won't compare. He complained that the Cell was sterile and without personality. The same rap we've been hearing for years. He pointed out we have exactly zero .300 hitters and rank almost last in team average. Can't argue with that factoid. He mentioned Pods has zero home runs and 18 rbis. Not certain why that was a big deal. He stated Ozzie should be Manager of the Year. Right now, don't even vote. He's making it happen. The one complaint I was puzzled by is he didn't like the food at the Cell and called it generic with hot dogs and pizza. He was looking for ribs or some Chicago specialties. Has the menus changed since last year?
  7. White Sox > AL Central > AL My path during the playoffs and world series.
  8. I figured out the key to complaining around here is finding guys who are having break out years and comparing their contracts to guys who have done it for years before signing a contract. Example: I can't believe we are paying Buerhle $6 million. I'd rather have a couple guys like Garland at $3.4 and use the rest of the money to fill holes. Buerhle just isn't worth $6 million when you can have a guy like Garland, with more wins, for $3.4 million.
  9. QUOTE(EvilMonkey @ Jul 25, 2005 -> 10:38 PM) Just a thought, if our Constitution is supposed to be a 'living document' that can bend and adapt with the ever changing times, why can't our rights be as well? Tex, I understand what you are saying, but one one hand you criticize Bush and co. about being so 'black and white', but then on the other, you appear to be on some issues as well. yeah, maybe the terrorists HAVE won a bit. People also used to be able to leave their car doors unlocked. If I did that now, I would be needing a new radio tomorrow, assuming my car would still be there in the morning. Oh no, the crooks have won! I have to lock my door! We need to do SOMETHING. I'm not sure what checking random backpacksis gonna do, except maybe move the bombs to a different hiding place, but it is a start. Do YOU have a different suggestion? I haven't heard it yet. I said at least twice in this thread, we do need to take these steps and each of these steps are a step back for our rights and freedoms. It certainly isn't a step forward for rights and freedoms. I don't believe anyone will say random searches are a victory for us and a defeat for terrorists. You are correct, now they will blow themselves up on a crowded corner or a football stadium. So we search there also. Soon random searches could be the price we pay for being in public. If you were a suicide bomber, attacking mass transit, would you loiter on the platform or rush up at the last minute? So if the transit police are looking for someone to search wouldn't the late arriving passenger be a good choice? Now realize that could be you, and you are watching the train take off, while Barny is checking your lunch for explosives. Needing to arrive one hour early for a bus, like an airplane, is a victory over terrorists? What concerns me is we are not only accepting a reduction in freedom, we are demanding and defending it. When we have totally thrown out innocent until proven guilty, we will have completed the cycle. We talk about how if one innocent life is saved by these random searches, and that it is worth it. We could save hundreds and thousands of lives by reducing the speed limit to 55 (again). We could save hundreds of lives by banning guns (I am against that, but as an example), banning alcohol and tobacco, again would save lives. Of course we would not accept any of those infringements, yet we freely give up other freedoms. Great point on our rights being flexible. They are probably on a pendulum, able to swing back and forth. Right now, we are on a swing away from total freedom.

  11. George Lopez is a lot funnier since I live down here on the border. I'll be listening to some of his stuff and recognizing friends.
  12. Why have we been checking security at airports? Terrorists!! Before Hijackers, there was no screener, metal detectors, etc. So terrorists won that one a long time ago. Try again. Name me one area where we have more freedom than before? Look how much debt we are racking up in Iraq. That's a victory? What have we won? Are you really saying life in America is better today? Deeper in debt. Less freedoms. More paranoia.

  16. QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Jul 25, 2005 -> 01:36 PM) So what should we do? Basically what we are doing. But realize we haven't won. Since 9/11 do we have more or less freedoms? Since 9/11 are we running budget surpluses or deficits? Deficits to fight the war on terror. How did the USSR fall? Largely from economic pressures brought on my debt. Since 9/11 can you board a plane without taking off your shoes? Soon the DMV will be asking for identification before you can renew your driver's license. They will be instant experts on birth certificates from around the world. http://unrealid.com/ Won't this be pleasant as it takes days to renew your driver's license. We are suppose to be about freedom. I believe we've talked about spreading freedom around the world. Yet we are watching ours erode. This is winning? When you cannot walk down your own street without vigilantes stopping you because you may be an illegal. This is winning? When police can roll up to a subway stop and search anyone without probable cause? Our collective paranoia caused us to start war with Iraq and now our military is tied up there with what is shaping up to be a decade long effort while the Sudanese are dying. Was that about WMD or spreading freedom? Either way the terrorists have won. They are spread all over the globe and we're babysitting in Iraq trying to teach people to vote and protect themselves.
  17. A few boys from my Troop are out there, not part of that contingent. I'm packing my son up for a 2 week backpacking trip at Philmont Scout Ranch in New Mexico. Scary stuff.
  18. QUOTE(NUKE_CLEVELAND @ Jul 25, 2005 -> 12:08 AM) We are wealthy and powerful so all the worlds problems are our fault............didn't you get that memo? coming from a guy who supports the war in Iraq.

  21. If knives are outlawed, only outlaws will have knives.
  22. Nuke, Nuke, Nuke :headshake The terrorists bomb a subway in London, we start random searches on our subways. Police will roll up to bus stops and check people's bags. Cops will cruise the el-platforms and start checking random Americans. Anyone who wishes to ride NYC mass transit systems are now guilty until proven innocent by a bag check. And you are saying the terrorists haven't won? Keep your head in your ass buddy while the government rewrites the constitution and keeps eroding our freedoms. If we give up all our freedoms, the terrorists can't take them away . Sorry, but as an American I am quite proud of our constitution and the rights and freedoms it allows. People want to take those rights and freedoms away, and they are winning. I guess innocent until proven guilty and probable cause are parts of the constitution you don't believe in, and you support giving up. What other freedoms should we give up? The freedom to criticize the government (I guess only if it's a GOPernot), the freedom to assemble? If they bomb a library in Liverpool, will we start inspecting bags at libraries? If a bomb goes off on a crowded corner in Cairo, will be start bag searches on every crowded corner? Gas stations are an inviting target, will we need security at all gas stations? Is being guilty until proven innocent the price we will pay to be in public? If they use a gun, will we confiscate all the guns? Ohhh, let's not go there when the NRA supports so many GOPernots with my dues money. Why do we have such security measures at airports? Hijackers in the 60's caused that. Before that is was just come on in. Again, reacting to the terrorists. One goal of the terrorists was to change our way of life. They are achieving that goal and we are helping them. But Nuke, to make you happy, I'll agree we are winning the war on terror and the terrorists are losing. Every time we take another step to secure our lives, we win. When the police have total power to search anyone within our borders at any time, for any reason, it will be our crowning achievement and total victory over terrorists.
  23. QUOTE(fathom @ Jul 23, 2005 -> 12:44 PM) Manny leads the league in assists with 12. Cora better not make that same play tonight. When it comes to PK and Frank on the bases, you need to play it safe. Could that be because every team runs on him?
