  1. QUOTE(YASNY @ Jul 8, 2005 -> 03:23 AM) I saw a guy at a game with a "30" Sox jersey. Instead of "Ordonez" over the number, it said "He Gone".

    QUOTE(SoxFan101 @ Jul 8, 2005 -> 07:37 AM) Man you need to stop being a worry wart. Unless we suffer serious serious injuries like losing both Buehrle and Garland as well as like AJP and Thomas and maybe politte... we have it wrapped up. 40 years of watching baseball tells me it's almost never that easy. We run a stretch of .500 ball and Minny picks up a few games. No big deal, I think the lead is choke proof barring any injuries. But to think the lead will hover around double digits the rest of the way just isn't realistic to me. I also don't see it less than 5 games.
  3. QUOTE(NUKE_CLEVELAND @ Jul 7, 2005 -> 06:40 PM) Jimmy Piersall? Wasn't he fired for making stupid racist comments on air at one point? QUOTE(Adam G @ Jul 7, 2005 -> 07:18 PM) Heh, that was Jimmy the Greek. QUOTE(NUKE_CLEVELAND @ Jul 7, 2005 -> 07:20 PM) My mistake.

    I will be shocked if the Twins do not cut this lead at least in half before the end of the season. We have watched Minny for 3 seasons win the division. If everyone thinks this race is over on July 8th, y'all are kidding yourselves. Pick your poison, either Minny or Cleveland will make a run. It's baseball, it always happens.
  6. QUOTE(NUKE_CLEVELAND @ Jul 6, 2005 -> 08:50 PM) If you want to poke fun at him because of his Texas Drawl that's funny. I'm in charge of security, bless your hearts, y'all better not be poking fun of a Texas drawl or I'll me fixin' to suspend y'all. Knocking down celebs and leaders is an American game, not reserved for any single group.
  7. Are there guys having better seasons that are not going? Yes. Are they as valuable to their team? No But most of all Did he win the "who do you want to see in the All-Star game" fan ballot? Yes

    QUOTE(augustus_wingsby @ Jul 7, 2005 -> 05:14 PM) Well, maybe if you had taken the time to read his postings and his answers to questions, you would know that that is impossible for him to do. We are in a completely different worldline than the one he is from. If he did go back in time and "prevent what he claims is going to happen" he would effect nothing here, but some other worldline. Maybe you should read up on what you are so inclined to opine before you post. Welcome to Soxtalk Perhaps an old poster coming back to life?>

  10. QUOTE(FlaSoxxJim @ Jul 7, 2005 -> 04:54 PM) I think Grand Marnier is a great liquour that is rteally versitile in mixed drinks. A margarity made with Marnier (or Cointreau) instead of triple sec is a nice change of pace, and it makes a good Tom Collins as well. To me, Black Velvet is 1/2 Guinness and 1/2 champaigne.. I'm not familiar with teh liquour by that name, but the Guinness/champaigne drink is outstanding. We served them at our wedding. I've never had a Guiness and Champaigne (I am certain a sparkling wine from California could be substituted) but will have to give it a try. I do enjoy a black and tan when I can find guiness on draft. Fitting we should be discussing getting hammered in the President's birthday thread. And I should add Los Cumpleaños felices Sr. Presidente
  11. QUOTE(NUKE_CLEVELAND @ Jul 6, 2005 -> 02:29 PM) HAPPY BIRTHDAY MR. PRESIDENT. sucking up to the boss, eh Monica

  14. QUOTE(sox4lifeinPA @ Jul 7, 2005 -> 09:03 AM) y'all know I had to move to PA to learn to read... If I have time I'll pick it up. How many pages? Real fast read. You'll know around page 200 that I think you will have some great insights to add to the discussion. glad to see you around.
  15. QUOTE(Steff @ Jul 7, 2005 -> 04:29 PM) LOL.. one of my peeves also. While not a pet peeve of mine is . . . as in always three and always spaces in between. Yes, there is a name for that, and proper style. Something Jerry Pinkham, a journalism professor I had years ago drilled into my head. And this [ ~ ] is a tilde
  16. QUOTE(LowerCaseRepublican @ Jul 7, 2005 -> 01:04 PM) I knew the Alford name was familiar to me for some reason but I couldn't quite pin it to anything. Then I remembered -- http://www.abqjournal.com/opinion/guest_co...ion07-02-05.htm On a website called "Stop the ACLU," Alford recently published an article in which he urges the American Legion, a veterans group adamantly opposed to the ACLU, to "infiltrate" the organization and take it over from the "communists and liberals." "If even half of the members of the American Legion in southern New Mexico ... commit to (joining) the ACLU, and ... attend the board meetings," Alford proposes, "then they could expect to be asked to fill vacancies on the board. ... Our veterans could propose selected individuals to serve on the board, and vote them on in a massive landslide vote at the elections. ... If we did this state-wide, then we could effectively take over all of the local boards in the state of New Mexico within three to four years." In an attempt to distance himself from ACLU beliefs, Alford goes on to declare his support for compulsory military service and the death penalty. Then he confides, "You should also be aware that I ... serve as the secretary of the board of directors for the Southern New Mexico Chapter of the ACLU. It took me less than a year to get on the board. ... You, too, can be a card carrying member of the ACLU, and you should be. ... It's time to quit complaining about the problems in this nation, and to get involved in viable solutions." I can't figure out why they would want him off the board.
  17. QUOTE(winodj @ Jul 7, 2005 -> 10:36 AM) Eagle Scouts receive a higher level of pay in the military. Boy Scouts CAN be called up during a time of war by the President. Fort AP Hill, Virginia holds the National Jamboree every four years without the BSA paying a dime. There are benefits that the US government affords the BSA at large. Higher pay I thought was discontinued. I believe it was rooted in Eagle Scouts coming into the military with a better base of knowledge than the general population. Using that to recruit Eagle Scouts doesn't sound like a benefit, it sounds like a recruitment tool. CAN be called up, this would not be a benefit to most Scouts I know. BSA has contributed to improvements at AP Hill, although probably not on par with the benefit. But the military has called this one of their most important recruiting tools and training tools. They are inviting tens of thousands of young men who are, in general, patriotic, have outdoor skills, are generally better students, better behaved, and hosting them for a week. Sounds like the same thing every college does when recruiting athletes. It is also great training for the engineers, building teams, MPs, etc. in setting up and tearing down a town.
  18. Good analysis. The problem is we start chasing our tails and taking from one stack and never building. I cannot see how anyone could not place Kong as one of the top 4 1st basemen in the AL. And yes it is about balance. Kong is part of the power balance. We still play in one of the great power hitter's parks in the AL. We should have a couple guys in the line up that can take advantage of that. He is part of the nucleus and I think trading him for monetary reasons would be a mistake.
  19. QUOTE(SleepyWhiteSox @ Jul 7, 2005 -> 12:47 AM) I feel like a bigger loser than usual because hearing that audio clip put a big smile on my face... I love you guys! Join the club But, ahem, I Love You Gals

  21. QUOTE(SoxFan101 @ Jul 7, 2005 -> 08:05 AM) The fact is Konerko is going to get paid somewhere around 10 million this offseason and well he is just not worth it. And I tend to believe my own eyes and watching Konerko every sox game over athletes who only really pay attention to their own team and current opponent. I think its pretty obvious it would be smarter to save the money and not give Konerko and let 1B go to one of Dye, Rogo, or Gload. I guess if you don't have the money to spend. The players are on the field are watching all the other players, not just the player on their team. They see everyone, not just one. I guess once they get everyone on the team making the exact same money, some people will be happy.

    Bobby Jenks

    QUOTE(beck72 @ Jul 7, 2005 -> 05:07 AM) Could very well be. His future might be bright. But I have a hard time seeing Jenks pitching in a tight game in the playoffs with the sox this year. Come on he has 1 inning of big league experience Jenks = John Daly
  23. QUOTE(Y2HH @ Jul 7, 2005 -> 07:48 AM) Konerko is good, and a great guy from what I hear, but he is not worth a dime more than we are paying Dye...and right now I believe Konerko is making about 3 or 4 million MORE than Dye is... Konerko is worth about 5M per year. I think he makes more than Derek Lee who is not only a great hitter, but has speed and is the best defensive 1B in the game. Depending on Konerkos asking price is the deciding factor to keep him or let him go. Interesting that the players and coaches voted him #2. I tend to believe the player votes more than the fan votes. It is impossible to compare player contracts. When Lee signed his, he wasn't an All-Star. Do you think if he was negotiating today he would have the same contract? Plus each contract goes through stages where players are under paid then over paid. It is rare when a contract exactly matches what a player is "worth".
