QUOTE(YASNY @ Jan 11, 2005 -> 09:52 AM) My point is that he tried to mislead the public and affect the election with bulls***. Whether he accomplished or not is moot. Michael Moore is lower than shark s***, imho. I can't say I disagree with that assessment. If I was in charge of politics, I'd toss him out in the first purge. But Moore is a different animal than his film. There are actors and athletes whose personal life and ethics are different than mine. However, it doesn't prevent me from seeing their work and appreciating it, even paying to see it. Seinfeld is still funny even though Jerry tossed aside his wife for the babysitter. Annie Hall is still brilliant even though Woody Allen and Diane Keaton are a couple of nut jobs. Best example, is Jackson's performances any less deserving of their Grammy Awards? A lot more than Moore is in that film. I'll bet a GOPer or two snuck in.

QUOTE(YASNY @ Jan 11, 2005 -> 09:45 AM) OK ... Marketing had something to do with it. I give you that. As for your other question, if he was a RWN ... Yes, he probably would have twisted and misrepresented that point of view as well. And then maybe Kerry would have won. I do think Moore cost Kerry votes, not gained any. The GOP did an excellent job of deflecting and then turning around those attacks. I cannot think of a bad misstep that W and his campaign made. Compare the GOP deflecting Moore vs. the Kerry campaign dealing with the Swift Boat vets and many a political science paper will be written. At the core is profit margin. The swift boat guys had millionaires lined up to spend millions on ads, tours, etc. Moore had millionaires lined up to make millions. Americans don't like profit in opinion.

QUOTE(YASNY @ Jan 11, 2005 -> 09:36 AM) You specualte about that all you want. That scenario didn't occur. Moore trying to pass this off as a documentary during an election did occur. It has nothing to do with marketing and everything to do with politics. I am not 100% disagreeing with you on the politics but I believe it was secondary to artistic and career matters. You don't think he wanted to sell tickets to his movie? I think it had everything to do with his career as a film maker and making gobs of money. The storm of controversy, the notoriety, the selling of tickets allows his next film to be produced. Do you disagree if he was a Right Wing Nut he would have made something about the Swift Boat vets? I think his professional drive would stay the same, his style would stay the same, just the material would change.

QUOTE(YASNY @ Jan 11, 2005 -> 09:21 AM) Whatever was submitted to the Academy is irrelevent. He tried to pass it off to the public as a documentary. I agree that passing it off as a documentary was wrong. I just believe each film, song, painting, essay, etc. should be judged on it's own merits, without explanations without gaining or losing points from marketing and "intent". If Moore would have been a Right Wing Nut instead of a Left Wing Nut imagine the Swift Boat film we would have seen. A little kid in his jammies being gunned down while holding a lolly pop.

QUOTE(FlaSoxxJim @ Jan 11, 2005 -> 09:15 AM) I didn't think so... as long as it had a theatrical release that preceded the DVD release. I could be wrong though. I thought there was discussions months ago that Moore, who has control of the movie, refused to submit it as a documentary, only as a film. QUOTE(YASNY @ Jan 11, 2005 -> 09:03 AM) Moore tried to pass this drivel off as a documentary when released, during the course of an election. Very similar to "Rathergate". Of course, as Moore was pressed on issues and truths, he backed away from the documentary stance. But the marketing hype should be separate from the film for awards. People can say whatever they like, but in the end, the work of art must be judged on it's own merits. Unless you have Moore whispering to you during the movie, what happens outside the movie isn't relevant.

Damn I had a much better response written and I accidentally deleted it when pasting the quote. Here's goes a replacement. What I am saying is the movie should be judged as a movie. Was Gaye undeserving of a Grammy for What's Goin' On because the war was still being fought? Films do not have to be accurate. The best parallel I can give is the Blair Witch Project. It was shot as a documentary but nominated as a film. To put F911 as a documentary is wrong. Just like calling Rush a journalist is wrong (or so I've been told). Rush distorts things and twists things and gets things totally wrong, yet winds radio awards because he's an entertainer. Moore is an entertainer. We have to accept both. QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Jan 11, 2005 -> 08:51 AM) What's Going On (Al Cleveland/Marvin Gaye/Renaldo Benson) Mother, mother There's too many of you crying Brother, brother, brother There's far too many of you dying You know we've got to find a way To bring some lovin' here today - Ya Father, father We don't need to escalate You see, war is not the answer For only love can conquer hate You know we've got to find a way To bring some lovin' here today Picket lines and picket signs Don't punish me with brutality Talk to me, so you can see Oh, what's going on What's going on Ya, what's going on Ah, what's going on In the mean time Right on, baby Right on Right on Father, father, everybody thinks we're wrong Oh, but who are they to judge us Simply because our hair is long Oh, you know we've got to find a way To bring some understanding here today Oh Picket lines and picket signs Don't punish me with brutality Talk to me So you can see What's going on Ya, what's going on Tell me what's going on I'll tell you what's going on - Uh Right on baby Right on baby

QUOTE(YASNY @ Jan 11, 2005 -> 01:31 AM) One of these days, someone like Moss is going to go too far and he'll be lucky to get off the field alive. Seriously. Didn't the Pacers/Piston incident teach these idiots anything? It isn't just the home team fans that pay for all this. Have a little class and respect, act like a professional. I'm old and cranky, but my every thought when viewing that was negative. Negative about him, about the Vikings organization, and about the NFL if they allow that.

Randy Johnson shoving a cameraman
I remember during the D-backs love fest most people said Shilling loved the media spotlight and RJ just wanted to fade into the background. Like someone his size can. I've never really resolved in my mind what responsibility a player has to the media. Just how valid is the statement that the media represents the fans and how they treat the media is how they are treating the fans who are paying for all this? Does the player have more of a duty if the reporter always prints nice stuff about the team, or should all reporters be treated the same? Can the team dictate to the players who, when, and what to say?

I love the ignore feature so I can ignore all the ass clowns I dont like on this board, but even when they are ignored it still tells me they are on the site and when they post it shows they posted and just says "you have chose to ignore this user" Why cant it just make them gone so I dont have to see anything? Thats the only problem I got with this thing.. After a while those users just fade into the woodwork and ytou don't "see" the posts, kind of like you don't see come of the posting help above the entry box.

QUOTE(NUKE_CLEVELAND @ Jan 11, 2005 -> 01:03 AM) So a film that plays fast and loose with the facts and actually had the opposite effect that it was intended to have is now film of the year according to these idiots huh? More reason why the so-called experts are totally out to lunch on what constitutes a good movie. Nuke, Star Wars insn't real either, and there wasn't really a Napolean Dynamite. Movies can be fiction. Godfather was a great movie by most peoples standards. Was the intent of the film to glorify or demonize organized crime? If it was to demonize, would the film then suck because it had the opposite effect? Notice it wasn't nominated as a documentary. This movie was not a journalistic or historical portrayal. Just like Rush is entertainent and doesn't have to stick to facts, either do the movies. Major Payne didn't ride in and save that Military Academy and Bill Murray wasn't in the Army.

Would you be pissed?
QUOTE(YASNY @ Jan 10, 2005 -> 11:11 PM) If their targetted clientelle is "Jr. Republicans" then I can see why they'd want their employees to reflect that. But your buddy sounds a bit like George Steinbrenner to me. Not even close. It's the cheapest camp of this sort in Texas. I used Jr. Republicans trying to think of another youth group that would convey the image he's trying to get. Perhaps Mormom Missionaries may have set the image. Like I said these kids are going to net about $250 for the month. For that they will work Sunday through Saturday at the camp.

Would you be pissed?
QUOTE(Molto @ Jan 10, 2005 -> 09:48 PM) I don't see a problem with it. I mean, I think the guy is an idiot, but what is wrong with having employees dress and look a certain way? he wants to potray this camp in a certain way ... nothing wrong with it in my mind. Yeah, I can see your point. You have to keep in mind this Camp pays about $85 per week to the 16 year old staff, you live in cement open wall cells with a metal roof, string some hammocks and mosquito netting to sleep. No privacy. The staff was bad three years ago and down hill from there. Their approach is to have the kids cut their hair?? I agree it's probably a good lesson for the kids to learn, but at what expense? A well groomed, but incompetent staff?

QUOTE(Chisoxfn @ Jan 10, 2005 -> 09:47 PM) Not true, I remember watching without a paddle with a nice buzz at the movie theatres thinking it would be hillarious...not so. All of us just stared blank at the screen utterly dissapointed. We figured drinking would be wise just in case it sucked...boy were we wrong. Another movie that would be that bad is Club Dread. I watched like 10 minutes of it on one of the movie channels the other day and good god did it suck. Thanks for the warning. I was just telling my son we needed to see it. He thought I was wacked. I pointed out he rented Nap Dynomite and Without a Paddle looks 100X funnier, even without a sweet jump . . .
