Mmm...
The lead sports story on the local news is always HS football. The local sports radio talk show will be 90% HS sports. Fans know the names and tendencies of all the top HS players. McAllen High School's stadium seats 5,000 and it sells out.
This picture is from a scrimmage, not even a game.
One local radio station hires 26 stringers to cover all the Rio Grande Valley games. It is truly amazing.
Actually a few universities in Texas have teams and the University of Texas - Austin was ranked in the top 20 last season. Div. 3 Baylor, A&M, Tech, and a few others have teams.
But you are correct, Texas is better in football and baseball.
Texas has 12, count them 12, professional hockey teams. Ranking them ahead of every state and canadian province.
Off the top of my head, there are pro teams in the following Texas cities:
Dallas
Rio Grande Valley (McAllen)
Laredo
Houston
Corpus Cristi
San Antonio
Austin
San Angelo
Amarillo
Fort Worth
Lubbock
Midland-Odessa
Do they exist only to own the stadium or do they have other things to do?
That "midnight" negotiation of the Gov. Thompson seems so long ago. IIRC the clock "broke" at a couple minutes to midnight and then a deal was struck.
As much as I enjoy the f*** the Cubs stuff, I wonder just how little or much influence the Sox would have. It would really suck if it appeared the Cubs got the better schedule.
Kerry has the reach and seems to be in better shape. If Kerry can avoid an up close, toe to toe match, I think he can win. In a slug fest, I think Bush has the edge. He's beefier and seems better at taking a punch.
