  1. Because he can't buy and rename the party? I believe history will view Trump and more specifically his team, as some of the greatest political strategists of our generation. A true Washington outsider who figured out a way to win the biggest political prize. I believe he would have adopted liberal views if he thought he could have been elected as a Dem.
  2. I think we'll turn sooner. We came close to electing Beto which made folks realize it was possible. But Cruz is an easier target statewide than Cornyn. What is helping are the tech companies coming to Texas like Tesla and bringing in or keeping here, younger, better educated, workers. The divide is really more rural voters who don't need, want, or accept government interference and urban centers which do. Government health care? Stitch yourself up and get back to work. Taxes for stuff we'll never need or use? No. Tell me from 3,000 miles away what I can and can't do on my own land? Hell no. That self reliance runs deep. Classic small taxes, small government works the best for those people. Working the Beto campaign was a real eye opener. I respect those voters more.
  3. Another reason to dislike the move, Ozzie thinks it's a good one.
  4. It's crazy to think that there probably isn't a poster here who was alive the last time we added a state. Prior to Alaska and Hawaii it was a regular occurrence.
  5. There is always plenty of hypocrisy to go around. I did not criticize Trump and Republicans now for doing what I expected them to do four years ago. That is to do their jobs and confirm a SCOTUS nominee. I did criticize them then and I criticize them now for hiding behind some grand philosophy of allowing the voters to decide. We knew it was bullshit then, they just confirmed it now, and their supporters allow it. Our Constitution and country have withstood worse crisises than this.
  6. Every vote does matter, just like every senator and member of congress matters. It's a representative democracy. I'm not certain direct popular vote will create a better country. But if you want to give more power to Texas citizens I guess I should be happy. If the electoral college is flawed isn't the Senate flawed for the same reason?
  7. Once you start unraveling the premise of United *States* you have to rewrite the constitution. That federalism is core to the principals of our Constitution. I can't imagine the fights over election results. Every election will be a repeat of Bush - Gore only nationally as every precinct gets recounted. It also prevents one or two major cases of election fraud from changing the results. Now you would need to coordinate in many states you make a difference. Again, it also forces candidates to at least make a token attempt at covering all 50 states.
  8. Wouldn't it be nice if the coronavirus goes away tomorrow like a dangerous caravan of central Americans bent on destroying America?
  9. By law they can't announce until all the polls close. I believe it was enacted after the Reagan landslide was announced at noon and voter turnout was nil on the west coast.
  10. Where is G-7 when we need him?
  11. And you're not bothered by some of the senators and their hypocrisy?
  12. So I have a 100 watt solar panel and extra deep cycle 12v battery I used occasionally with my RV. I decided to hook it up in my backyard and power some 12v landscaping lights and a light in my shed. So far so good. I found a cheap controller on Amazon that has terminals to add a load plus a dusk timer. I'm having fun learning about electricity and solar charging.
  13. Didn't the president have to nominate someone before the Senate could get started?
  14. Is there a rich or powerful guy in America over 70 who wasn't a scumbag back in the day. Even Al Franken! At least he did the right thing and apologized and resigned.
  15. Anyone miss the days of early returns and projections before the polls closed?
  16. My concern is eliminating the electoral college and the citizens in about 20 states become important and states like mine become even more important.
  17. Everything in our government flows through states. The Congress, Senate, are based on states. Federal spending flows through states. We're the united states for a reason. The states elect a president.
  18. And northern for mayonnaise, baloney, and vaping supplies.
  19. That's what prompted the question. A coworker reported a business closing early tonight and claimed it was based on advice from law enforcement.
  20. You won't convert conservatives or liberals and candidates don't try. It's the middle third that determines elections.
  21. Has anyone heard of cities visibly preparing for looting and protests tonight?
  22. They had a MLB manager of the year finalist in place. The front office doesn't seem to think that's an issue.
  23. Any chance that maybe players will respect three World Series rings and a bust in Cooperstown?
  24. I'm also Catholic and point of interest Obama received a sizable majority of Catholic's votes. I believe I can justify my political leftist leanings with my faith quite nicely.
  25. First off understand by religious we really mean Christian. A few issues that cause folks to vote for a Republican candidate. Abortion. Continued tax deductions for donations. Merry Christmas not Happy Holidays. Private school choice.
