24 Summer Olympics Thread
Men's basketball thought. If they took only the best players from these Olympics. Randomly divided them onto two teams regardless of country, and had them play, you would have the NBA All Star game.

The Dawning of the Age of Sizemore/ Sox vs Cubs game thread 7:10 first pitch 8/9/24
My evidence is no top 100 prospect moved at the deadline. And the guy isn't going to help you much in the regular season and not at all in the post season. Not exactly the most overwhelming target and the highest mid season value. If he expressed a willingness to help a team in any way, including a move to the bullpen, I could see a team making that offer. But based on being a starter for the most innings in his life? Not exactly why teams trade for someone at the deadline. In six months I believe you will be right. I will be shocked if they don't receive offers this off-season with at least one top prospect, probably more. I just didn't see it as a deadline deal.

There wasn't one. But again what do you think Getz was offered? I have you my reasons why I don't think team's offered much. Never started a full season. Injury risks. Not interested in post season without an extension. No prospects getting moved for any player by any team. Deadline deals being used for the pennant race and post season not for cost and player control. Your reasons are all valid and why teams would be interested in the off season. Why trade and give up a roster spot for a guy that's likely not going to be pitching in September?

It's almost like every GM logged in here and learned he wasn't going to finish the season. Then they learned he wasn't going to pitch post season without a long term contract. There are no deals. I see that as an indicator that the market was soft. Again, no one gave up a top 100 prospect. I get the cheap and control but that isn't helping teams this season. Deadline deals are typically to get teams deeper into the playoffs or even into the playoffs. He wasn't going to help with that. If you were a GM how much would you have given up for him? I would not have given up much at the trade deadline.

What do you think Getz passed on? And what did you see in trades that makes you believe that? I saw no prospects moving and believe the offers were poor.

Because no top 100 prospect was moved by any team and there were other pitchers available. What do you think Getz turned down?

Exactly.

Would you have taken a deal that didn't include at least one top 100 prospect? No one was giving up prospects this year.

What's the trade value on a guy that can get you to the All Star break then needs to be shut down? How much would you want Getz to give up to add a guy like that?

Now if we can just sign someone to split the job with Garrett. Have him pitch half season and someone else pitch the other half.

Keep him on his regular rotation. Prepping for next season, wherever he plays.

I'm excited to see what happens. Sizemore has been in the trenches with these guys and probably sees more than anyone. I'm certain this lineup is pure genius. Wait, that way supposed to be in the I'm drunk thread.

If he's decent manager he would prefer to be starting in RF.

If he does better than expected in this role he will earn some options out of here. He seems eager to have a coaching career.

Or*this* is the Getz lineup. Sizemore doesn't have a three year contract or a gig for next year.

The Sox aren't spending "right now"
If we accept that all things being equal, guys won't choose to come here, then JR has two options Continue to make offers that aren't accepted and look cheap. Overpay for the Beni's of the league and appear stupid. Liam is one of the few exceptions.

The Sox aren't spending "right now"
I agree. Next question, is Jerry really cheap or do guys just not want to play here?

The Sox aren't spending "right now"
We currently have the 7th highest paid LF. And for why then? It's about the earliest I can see the team being competitive.

Interesting that Getz already decided against Sizemore being permanent. I'm not certain who that benefits.

The assumption is the farm system will produce some players. We keep trading current MLB for prospects, we may get lucky.

Thank you. I forgot how much he's receiving.

It's tough to see any rays of sunshine fighting their way out of the black hole season but there are a couple. For me the biggest is watching the farm system move up in potential. The Sox likely will never simultaneously have a top farm system and a top team. They lower one to raise the other. Trading the last couple of MLB players with any value will raise the farm further. Going outside for the interim was a pleasant surprise. But it is easier to be pessimistic about all things Sox.

Which is why we dumpster dive for the Benintendi's of the world until the kids are ready

The Sox aren't spending "right now"
The A tier isn't coming here unless our offer was way better than everybody else. Plus until we see how our future "Star" players develop we're guessing which holes to fill. So another year of Beni level free agents. Then he better open the wallet for multiple championship opportunities
