Engagement Rings
Btw, I was slightly surprised by the fact that the last five couples I know to be married or engaged purchased rings online.

Investing Thread
QUOTE (Y2HH @ Jun 22, 2013 -> 10:01 AM) For accounts such as this, the money you're putting in is already taxed, so they don't owe taxes on the initial investments, ONLY the profits those investments create (minus trading costs). So if you buy a stock/fund, and it goes up, those gains aren't realized, so they're not taxable. If they sold that stock at a profit, they'd then owe taxes on the PROFIT of that sale upon selling. It doesn't matter who on the account pays the taxes on the profit, so long as it's paid. Look into fees, how much are they charging you for these funds (cost basis), etc... Thank you, I was actually thinking more about the original set up of the account. At some point I will be taking my name off, ''gifting'' it to them. I am wondering if it would actually be advantagious to just leave me off from the beginning. I do like the opportunity to teach them about investing using my money but they would realize the benefits. The fund itself has modest fees. I am picking it for ease of use and low start up costs. I have consolidated almost everything with USAA abd for a small account like his, I am valuing conveinence over returns.

What do y'all think of this? USAA has a First Invest Fund targeted for younger investers. It doesn't set the word on fire but offers a very low opening investment of $50 when you autodraft monthly deposits into the account. I was thinking of opening accounts for each of my kids (24 and 22) with joint ownership. Later I would bow out when they turn 30, get married, etc. I need to understand the tax implications doing it that way.

NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden
QUOTE (Y2HH @ Jun 18, 2013 -> 01:40 PM) I think you're dreaming and need to wake up from this fantasy. If you walked down the street right now and asked random people about Snowden and the NSA, you'd be lucky if 2 in 10 knew anything about it, and you'd be even luckier if either person knew more than, "Yea, I heard about something like that..." However, if you ask them to name the cast of Jersey Shore, or who the current Bachlorette, or who just had a baby in hollywood, I'm sure 8/10 would know those answers. ...and that's why I maintain, this "dialogue" doesn't matter...and in a few weeks, it'll be long forgotten. Earlier you made the case that everyone already knew what the government was doing. Now you seem to say no one knows or cares. In the simplest of ways we can either trust the government and attack Snowden or believe he did something good, question the government by continuing the discussion. I believe people did not know the extent and this is the opportunity to educate them. Maybe not to the level where they are as brilliant as yourself, but maybe they can come close.

5/10 Damn good questions. The balk and catchers interference were interesting.

Former top Latin America scout sentenced to yr in prison
I haven't logged in for over a week, I couldn't stomach it. This was the first thread I clicked on. Seemed way more interesting than anything with players, results, managers, GMs or anything else.

SCOTUS allows DNA Collection
Interesting comments. I've complained before about random drug checks for employees, I always felt you needed some cause. Is getting arrested cause for searching your DNA? I am leaning towards this being a good police technique but I do see problems such as false positives. I'd be inclined to toss out profiling and keep DNA gathering.

2012-2013 NBA thread
I've really grown weary of trying to compare guys that played the same position, but in different eras. And just forget about comparing guys who played different positions. If you judge a fish by its ability to climb trees, it fails. Basketball is played with a 12 man roster, Lebron and MJ are on the roster and starting. And, I'll take a roster of guys who have played in the past twenty years against guys who played before anytime. In fact, I'll take guys ranked 13 - 24 from the past twenty years against the top 12 of the 50s - 80s, the game has changed that much. Ok that may be a bit of hyperbole, but when was the last time Dr. J was mentioned in any GOAT thread? Oscar who?

ARod suspended for entire 2014 season
Sad day for baseball. I like the penalty for signing users that have been caught. It would potentially lower the future earnings of cheaters.

Two-mile wide tornado hits OKC suburb
QUOTE (flavum @ May 31, 2013 -> 07:32 PM) Unbelievable. Hope people don't die. Baseball note--Oklahoma City is hosting the Omaha Storm Chasers. They are in a wind delay. Wind delay? Was it blowing out or in? I wonder how much it has to blow before they call the game.

Food stamps....what would Jesus do? Rep. Stephen Fincher story
Very interesting read. I do see the two issues as two different issues. One is feeding the needy, especially children the other is supporting farms. We import more than half of our food. Various public policies are making it harder and harder to maintain our agriculture industries. That seems as vital to our national defense as helium, oil, and manufacturing. (We maintain a helium storage facility).

Pentagon invites China to Naval Exercise
Their technology only has to be good enough so that it will only take losing five of them to kill one of ours.

Batavia teacher in trouble .....
I don't see it driving anything further underground. It is a longshot, but there are people that call for help. Some need a nudge in that direction. This could be that nudge. And remember you are trying to help maybe 5 or 6 students in the entire district that may be contemplating suicide. It isn't like dozens killed themselves. I would be surprised if there wasn't some decent science behind it.

Any idea what the team is doing with that $6,900,000.00?

Batavia teacher in trouble .....
We have both targeted and random searches. As soon as students know the dog is on campus they suddenly have to go to the bathroom. I suggested we just wait in the bathroom and nail them there.

Batavia teacher in trouble .....
QUOTE (farmteam @ May 29, 2013 -> 09:46 AM) I can't believe the school actually thought this was a good idea in the first place. Remember this is a district that has experienced a much higher than normal suicide rate. Determining which students may have a propensity towards harming themselves is a worthy goal. Unfortunately, the tip offs are self destructive behaviors that not many would want to admit. Thinking about it a bit, if someone is looking for help, they might just admit it on a school required form. The school administration probably also know that many students will not incriminate themselves, but some may. Therefor, a teacher discouraging, or making it cool to resist, doesn't help that part of the process. This reminds me a bit about a seminar I went to on bombs in buildings. The ATF agent recommended if we received a bomb threat to ask where was the bombm what did it look like, when will it explode, etc. When we laughed he pointed out that the caller called to warn us and it is possible they truly do want to prevent a tragedy. Counterintuitive I know, but it has played out that way.
