QUOTE (Chet Kincaid @ Nov 9, 2011 -> 09:14 AM) I think that that the desire to win and be the best is what drives professional athletes. That is a big reason that they are pros and we sit around and talk about them. What I'm trying to say is that it's easy for us to say that we'd take the money because we aren't pros. But their willingness to work hard and sacrifice to be winners is a big reason that they are professional athletes in the first place. They are competitive in everything except how much they earn? You don't think they want to be the highest paid at their position?

QUOTE (PlaySumFnJurny @ Nov 9, 2011 -> 09:54 AM) The AD gets indicted, the President will be fired, but the Head Coach gets to finish up the season and "retire?" Do they even teach public relations or ethics at Penn State? If Paterno gets a gold watch, they should give it to him where Christopher Walken kept his in "Pulp Fiction." Because reporting laws generally rely on the head of an organization to report these allegations to the police. Where is the outrage over the grad student not reporting this to the police? Paterno did exactly what was required by law and if there was any training done by the University it would have told him to do exactly what he did. remember he's a University employee just like a faculty member or a librarian. From what we've read so far Paterno did not try to cover it up, he reported it.

Anyone care to share some links? From what I read Paterno was told by a grad student what the grad student thought he witnessed. At least one story makes it seems as if the student wasn't certain of what he actually saw, and didn't tell Paterno that the kid was being sodomized. It may have been "hey I saw these two in the shower and something just isn't right." Paterno followed exactly what the law required. Remember someone told him what they saw. Based on what I've read so far, I believe Paterno retiring at the end of the season is fine. I certainly can't hold him to a higher punishment than the person who actually saw what was happening and didn'treport it to police. I believe the law is/was grossly inadequate in these cases and am happy that, at least in Texas, there are further requirements.

We don't know if they stopped and ran off, or what. But yeah, I would be punching and kicking the guy and if there was anything left the cops could have him. The heirarchy of blame that I always seem to settle with in these situations The perpetrator People with first hand knowledge (witnesses) (Grad Student) People with second hand knowledge (they were told something) (Paterno) In rare cases, the victims also get some blame. (doesn't apply here)

The grad student witnesses two people having sex, probably illegally (I don't know the victim's age)a rape of a minor and doesn't call police, he tells Paterno. Paterno doesn't call police, he reports to his boss (meets his legal responsibility). The University does some weak investigation, and the abuse continues. At the time of this event, the guy was not employed by the University. He retired in 1999 and this happened in 2002. Should the grad student resign from whatever job he has? The system let these kids down and there should be a lesson to call the police. I believe Paterno will step down falling on his sword, but based on what I have read so far, I do not believe he should be held responsible. Now, as more comes out that may all change.

The quotes always start coming up this time of year. "Greedy, he just wants the money!" "I bet he hates for going to X now that his old team won". Yest when a player does sign for less because a team seems like a title lock *cough* Heat, fans get upset. What free agent would have looked around last year and signed with the Cards for less because they had a great chance at a title? I'm taking the money, hoping Boras will accept me as a client. During my retirement I'll visit the poor section of town and pay my respects to the players who chased a title lock for less money, whether they got it or not.

I didn't see this anywhere so I thought I'd toss it in. Many women report when being attacked how small and powerless they feel. Which is understandable. A mention of a protector (boyfriend, husband) is intended to cause this larger than me person who is assaulting me to fear a physical reprisal and stop. It isn't intended as a "I'd love to have sex with you right here, but sorry, I have a boyfriend." Of course now Jenks will be telling us that we have Penn State haters after $$$$$$$$ bringing down that program. Pretty suspicious that this comes out two weeks after Joe breaks the record.

We are planning our summer 2012 trip and will be heading up the Continental Divide camping, backpacking, some hotels and cabins. I am searching for shorter few hour things to do while driving from point a to point b and any tips at the bigger national parks. We have about 4 weeks for this trip. Thank you.

Oh I keep trying to find uses for it. We're reading a couple railroad short stories and I downloaded an ap to play audio clips of trains as background music.

This reminds me of the case where a woman was about to be raped and asked the rapist to use a condom, which the slut had in her nightstand. The defense claimed it made it consensual because her reaction was trying to avoid getting AIDS or pregnant.

QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Nov 7, 2011 -> 08:41 PM) $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ How else should Cain have been disciplined? We have a system in this country of jail and fines for criminal and financial rewards for civil. That's our system. WHat alternative would have suggested?

QUOTE (BigEdWalsh @ Nov 7, 2011 -> 08:08 PM) I think I did too. When trying to think of female villains, I just can't get past my ex-wife. After my ex-wife, even cat woman seems like a nice, normal, woman.

QUOTE (knightni @ Nov 7, 2011 -> 01:05 PM) What's new? I'm keeping my lists authentic. Later, when you are announcing results I can hit my head and say, damn I forgot him. BTW, I just realized I think I have an all-male list.

Maybe I picked a decent soccer ap for my iPad, but so far, it isn't too promising. Plus I still suck at the controls on the iPad.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Nov 7, 2011 -> 08:21 AM) Which is funny, because his main complaint is freedoms. I'd love to see his reaction to his rights in Mexico as an immigrant. From talking to many a maquila manager who moved to the interior, it's usually pretty damn nice. A work permit was under $100 and could be obtained in a day. Once that is secured you can travel and live anywhere in the country. There are some restrictions on land ownership, but the rest isn't too bad. Until the drug violence escalated I would have accepted a position in the interior without hesitation. Then you also have areas like Lake Chapala which recently had 40,000 ex-pats living there. You don't even have to learn Spanish. Very cheap living. Imagine a nice 2,000 square foot home with modern amenities, a gardener, maid, etc for US $500 per month.

QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Nov 7, 2011 -> 03:53 PM) Translation: "I didn't really want to do this, until someone handed me 20k to make this press conference." What a joke. I also liked how she phrased what happened to her. In a prepared statement written by attorneys, her first "response" to Cain physically touching her wasn't "hey what are you doing?! You can't do that!" It was "hey, you know I have a boyfriend." You are so right. Any attorney would have told her that saying hey you can't do that would have been better for a lawsuit. Damn, maybe she just wanted him to stop? Crazy.

QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Nov 7, 2011 -> 05:24 PM) Be sarcastic all you want. The timing of this is incredibly suspect. Just wait until she's on Nancy Grace to further "the cause." Really? Perry enters the race, his campaign uncovers some issues with another candidate and tips off reporters who then report on it. Should Perry have maybe done the research before announcing he was running? What is so suspicious about Perry tipping them off when he did?

QUOTE (RockRaines @ Nov 7, 2011 -> 01:09 PM) Meh, not great comparisons. In this case, people are complaining about paying for a service that they use for their own needs. I dont think I would complain about something like XM radio or Sirius radio in my car because I expect that to cost a fee. I dont complain about tipping a server because I am using their service to make it easier to dine. And if they doubled or tripled their rates you wouldn't complain?

All New Soccer Thread ~ All Levels ~ All Leagues
Texsox replied to Texsox's topic in Alex’s Olde Tyme Sports Pub
Well today was the first practice where I wasn't competing with the football team for players. Several new kids showed up and I needed to field a team tomorrow night. Yuck. I slotted kids as best I could, but I know I have a few out of position, a few kids starting that shouldn't. I explained that to everyone but one kid started sulking, walked away pouting. I figure this is his one chance, then he's adios. -
QUOTE (RockRaines @ Nov 7, 2011 -> 12:52 PM) SO basically, you need not complain because there are other options? Ever complain about a bad restaurant? There are other options? Ever complain about a car? Same thing. This just hit a wider group of people all at the same time.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Nov 7, 2011 -> 12:57 PM) Effective zero percent interest rates at the Federal Reserve level. Doesn't that also lower the banks' cost?
-
You are too young to remember but when consumers complained about ATMs when they were introduced the banks omniously said going to a live teller was too expensive and that the ATMs were a better, cheaper alternative. Today I find it amazing that banking is the only industry I can think of that a machine is more expensive than a human. Are there any systems you sell where it is cheaper for the company to just hire people to do it instead of buying software? And what many people are discovering is you can get those features for free. Again, it was my savings that tipped the balance. No way an account with anywhere from $5,000 to $10,000, maybe 30 transactions a year, 26 deposits, should cost me anything.
-
Mechanical and disciplined are two different concepts. You can be mechanical and not disciplined, you can be mechanical and disciplined, you can even be free swinging and disciplined, whcih may be what our new coach is saying.
-
Not a mechanical hitter and letting it fly could mean about technique not about aggressive swings. Instead of filling his head with mechanical thoughts like hip position, shoulder rotation, head angle, etc. just see a good pitch and swing. Works in golf and I believe it works in baseball.

Rock for over one hundred years banks have not only done that for free, they actually paid you for storing your money there. What has changed? Products that the banks themselves invented, promoted, and in some cases forced, onto their customers. When my wife opened a new checking account she told them she did not want a debit card. She was not allowed to opt out of a debit card. She was told she could throw it away when she received it in the mail, but there was not a way to stop the debit card from being created. My objection is I have been regularly making two transfers per month into a savings account. Both come from my checking account, also at the same bank. That does not qualify me for a free savings account. The only ways I can keep my savings account there without a $10 per month fee is to have a $25,000 balance (on an account paying 1%) or have a direct deposit from by employer. I'm moving the account to a bank that does not have those rules and as a bonus, I can make deposits from my phone. So I am complaining that my bank is charging me for services that other banks offer for free. If your local coffee shop started a cover charge to get in the door would you keep paying for it or switch to another coffee shop?
