  1. GA student didn't report it to the police GA student's dad, didn't report it to the police What exactly did he say had happened in 2002? I'm still not clear on that point. I'm kind of shocked that this many people heard the Sandusky was raping a 10 year old in the shower and none of them reported it. That doesn't seem possible. If that's the case, why the hell isn't the GA arrested for failing to report a crime to the police?
  2. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Nov 9, 2011 -> 12:03 PM) Tex, You're a teacher, and as a teacher, you have certain responsibilities to report any child abuse. That's your legal obligation. If you report that abuse to your principal, are you done? Would you wash your hands of the matter and say "well, I told my boss, that's all I can do?" Wouldn't you follow up on the matter, making attempts to ensure that the situation was being taken seriously? If I see somebody doing something grossly incompetent in my line of work (engineering), it is not enough simply to tell my boss and then walk away. Not legally, and not morally. If you see a serious problem, you need to stand up and make sure that it is resolved before someone gets hurt. Are you asking me if another teacher told me they witnessed something, I would remind them of their legal resposnibility. Remember the GA called his dad that night and his dad told him to tell Paterno. Even his dad didn't call the police. Now should his dad lose his job also? He dad knew about it well before Paterno? And I would call Child Protective Services and the police.
  3. QUOTE (RockRaines @ Nov 9, 2011 -> 10:29 AM) Well, he forced Sandusky into retirement after he first heard about it, and then still let the guy have access to both kids and his facilities for another 3-4 years before hearing about it again and finally banning Sandusky from having kids on campus (which he still did). That to me says he knew about it and basically said its ok as long as its not on campus and you arent a PSU employee. The Grad student met with Paterno at his house and told him what he saw and nobody picked up the phone and called 911 or child services or anything. Wouldnt you expect more from the most powerful man in State College? If that is considered "doing enough" then I dont know what has happened to people. What I read was this was from 2002 and Sandusky retired in 1999. Shouldn't the eye witness be the one to call police?
  4. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Nov 9, 2011 -> 12:51 PM) According to Ms. Allred's statement, she has taken this case pro bono. What she gets is career building publicity.
  5. QUOTE (Alpha Dog @ Nov 9, 2011 -> 12:48 PM) Gloria Allred, or however you spell her name. She doesn't work for free, so she got access somehow. And should we believe her MORE because she is poor? And that is a dilema that really has no clear answer. Should she have settled for an "I'm sorry?" Our entire system of civil penalties revolves around a financial penalty. When the people who can afford it the most settle with the people they hurt and who have the least, then it's accuse the accuser time. When the people who can afford it the most settle with false accusers, it is still accuse the accuser time. Tough to know who to believe, but that highlights why Cain would settle. Who's going to believe that po' woman anyway? But I believe there are way more people settling true accusations, knowing they can explain it away with a "it was too expensive to fight" than falsly accused people settling.
  6. Very nice, and this is a school district owned device. I am in a small group trying to create lesson plans that will utilize an iPad or iPod Touch.
  7. I need to crawl through the thread again and answer all the questions but basically our idea is like the last couple of summers, leave the beach in mid July and start driving. We're stopping in San Antonio to visit her folks, then Palo Dura Canyon for the Texas! music spectacular. From there it was Yellowstone, and back. We tentatively dropped Glacier because of the additional drive. We have a longer trip planned for 2014 where that will fit in better. So basically it is South Padre Island Texas to Yellowstone and back. We are still deciding where we should stop and what we should do. From talking with a friend who was there this past summer we dropped a day or two from Yellowstone and added Grand Teton. We are going to stay two nights in a cabin at Yellowstone, but have not decided on a location. Same with the camp grounds.
  8. QUOTE (MexSoxFan#1 @ Nov 9, 2011 -> 09:30 AM) Iyou got Home Depot, Office Depot, Staples, McDonalds, Burger King, Subway, Dairy Queen, WalMart, Costco, Sam's Club, Best Buy, Pizza Hut, Dominos, Little Ceasars, Jack In The Box, Starbucks, Chili's, TGIF, Napa, Autozone etc. But do you have a Pollo Loco there?
  9. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Nov 8, 2011 -> 08:05 AM) Along with the job paying $2 an hour/ Is he a minimum wage guy here in the US? I believe his earning potential might be even better in Mexico. Wrestling is huge.
  10. One other point, think about how many very wealthy men do not have to settle harrassment claims. I wonder why that is? Why are some guys such targets?
  11. QUOTE (Alpha Dog @ Nov 9, 2011 -> 11:29 AM) Not quite sure how to word this, but here goes. Several people on here getting pissy about the 'character assassination' of the women in regards to the Cain Incident(s). Just wondering what you would have him (or his proxys) DO? In a strictest he said/she said circumstance, that is about all he can do. Or should he just shut up and say nothing? Or just a simple 'they are wrong, I am innocent'? While I agree that sometimes it can go to an extreme, but is not the character of the accuser as important as the character of the person being accused? If someone IS getting paid for interviews, and is in bad financial shape, people deserve to know that, as it MAY be a basis for her allegations, or to exaggerate something that did happen. If someone has accused others if 'inappropriate conduct' a few times before, is that not also important in determining the makeup of the accuser's statements? I guess i just want to know what you would have him do? I believe that should have been done by Cain and his attorneys back at the time of the settlement(S). We are not back at the he said / she said stage, we're at the stage where there is additional evidence in the form of a settlement(S). And in our society, a financial penalty is what we extract from wrongdoers. We don't chop off fingers or cane someone. Even in criminal procedures we extract a financial penalty. So anyone that points to the very tool we use as somehow leading to an accuser's motive seems wrong to me. But you bring up a valid point and the reason that poor people are such perfect targets in our society. They do not have access to great legal counsel *and* people will discredit what they say based on their financial situation. If this was some 5th Avenue, wealthy person making the accusation, we wouldn['t be having this discussion. But since the accuser is of more modest means, she is open to this speculation.
  12. QUOTE (Chet Kincaid @ Nov 9, 2011 -> 09:14 AM) I think that that the desire to win and be the best is what drives professional athletes. That is a big reason that they are pros and we sit around and talk about them. What I'm trying to say is that it's easy for us to say that we'd take the money because we aren't pros. But their willingness to work hard and sacrifice to be winners is a big reason that they are professional athletes in the first place. They are competitive in everything except how much they earn? You don't think they want to be the highest paid at their position?
  13. QUOTE (PlaySumFnJurny @ Nov 9, 2011 -> 09:54 AM) The AD gets indicted, the President will be fired, but the Head Coach gets to finish up the season and "retire?" Do they even teach public relations or ethics at Penn State? If Paterno gets a gold watch, they should give it to him where Christopher Walken kept his in "Pulp Fiction." Because reporting laws generally rely on the head of an organization to report these allegations to the police. Where is the outrage over the grad student not reporting this to the police? Paterno did exactly what was required by law and if there was any training done by the University it would have told him to do exactly what he did. remember he's a University employee just like a faculty member or a librarian. From what we've read so far Paterno did not try to cover it up, he reported it.
  14. Anyone care to share some links? From what I read Paterno was told by a grad student what the grad student thought he witnessed. At least one story makes it seems as if the student wasn't certain of what he actually saw, and didn't tell Paterno that the kid was being sodomized. It may have been "hey I saw these two in the shower and something just isn't right." Paterno followed exactly what the law required. Remember someone told him what they saw. Based on what I've read so far, I believe Paterno retiring at the end of the season is fine. I certainly can't hold him to a higher punishment than the person who actually saw what was happening and didn'treport it to police. I believe the law is/was grossly inadequate in these cases and am happy that, at least in Texas, there are further requirements.
  15. We don't know if they stopped and ran off, or what. But yeah, I would be punching and kicking the guy and if there was anything left the cops could have him. The heirarchy of blame that I always seem to settle with in these situations The perpetrator People with first hand knowledge (witnesses) (Grad Student) People with second hand knowledge (they were told something) (Paterno) In rare cases, the victims also get some blame. (doesn't apply here)
  16. The grad student witnesses two people having sex, probably illegally (I don't know the victim's age)a rape of a minor and doesn't call police, he tells Paterno. Paterno doesn't call police, he reports to his boss (meets his legal responsibility). The University does some weak investigation, and the abuse continues. At the time of this event, the guy was not employed by the University. He retired in 1999 and this happened in 2002. Should the grad student resign from whatever job he has? The system let these kids down and there should be a lesson to call the police. I believe Paterno will step down falling on his sword, but based on what I have read so far, I do not believe he should be held responsible. Now, as more comes out that may all change.
  17. The quotes always start coming up this time of year. "Greedy, he just wants the money!" "I bet he hates for going to X now that his old team won". Yest when a player does sign for less because a team seems like a title lock *cough* Heat, fans get upset. What free agent would have looked around last year and signed with the Cards for less because they had a great chance at a title? I'm taking the money, hoping Boras will accept me as a client. During my retirement I'll visit the poor section of town and pay my respects to the players who chased a title lock for less money, whether they got it or not.
  18. I didn't see this anywhere so I thought I'd toss it in. Many women report when being attacked how small and powerless they feel. Which is understandable. A mention of a protector (boyfriend, husband) is intended to cause this larger than me person who is assaulting me to fear a physical reprisal and stop. It isn't intended as a "I'd love to have sex with you right here, but sorry, I have a boyfriend." Of course now Jenks will be telling us that we have Penn State haters after $$$$$$$$ bringing down that program. Pretty suspicious that this comes out two weeks after Joe breaks the record.
  19. We are planning our summer 2012 trip and will be heading up the Continental Divide camping, backpacking, some hotels and cabins. I am searching for shorter few hour things to do while driving from point a to point b and any tips at the bigger national parks. We have about 4 weeks for this trip. Thank you.
  20. Oh I keep trying to find uses for it. We're reading a couple railroad short stories and I downloaded an ap to play audio clips of trains as background music.
  21. This reminds me of the case where a woman was about to be raped and asked the rapist to use a condom, which the slut had in her nightstand. The defense claimed it made it consensual because her reaction was trying to avoid getting AIDS or pregnant.
  22. QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Nov 7, 2011 -> 08:41 PM) $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ How else should Cain have been disciplined? We have a system in this country of jail and fines for criminal and financial rewards for civil. That's our system. WHat alternative would have suggested?
  23. QUOTE (BigEdWalsh @ Nov 7, 2011 -> 08:08 PM) I think I did too. When trying to think of female villains, I just can't get past my ex-wife. After my ex-wife, even cat woman seems like a nice, normal, woman.
  24. QUOTE (knightni @ Nov 7, 2011 -> 01:05 PM) What's new? I'm keeping my lists authentic. Later, when you are announcing results I can hit my head and say, damn I forgot him. BTW, I just realized I think I have an all-male list.
  25. Maybe I picked a decent soccer ap for my iPad, but so far, it isn't too promising. Plus I still suck at the controls on the iPad.
