QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Oct 19, 2010 -> 04:52 PM) I gotta call B.S. on this Tex. The groupthink that has driven the last 2 bubbles isn't going to go away. There was every reason in 2001 to think that the Stock Market was a risky investment, but books called "Dow 36,000" were still published. Housing bubbles had happened and popped repeatedly throughout history. California had one in the late 80's. There's the legendary Florida land rush before the depression. Hell, there is every reason to believe China has a monstrous real estate bubble going right now as we speak, and their interest rate increase today probably will wind up being something similar to what was going on in the U.S. market in 06 or so. If things like leverage aren't regulated, the same groupthink will take over, some wizard will convince himself he's come up with the new security, and bang. Good thought. I will agree if you placed some sort of time on that. I think this pain will be remembered for many years. But as a new generation of home buyers enters the market they will probably believe they are smarter than their parents.

Technology catch-all thread
QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Sep 27, 2010 -> 08:05 AM) I'd always had great luck with computers, in terms of not ever having any major hardware failures. Then yesterday, I dropped my laptop, and the screen is now toast. I can hook it up to the TV and see the computer itself is fine otherwise, which is a relief. But it doesn't project well on the TV, and I'd be taking up the one TV in the house. So now, I have a debate. I see that they sell replacement screens online - and I found a manual on how to do it. Looks like major surgery. New screen is $80, but a lot of time, and who knows if I'll screw it up. Or, I can buy an external LCD monitor for like $200, and turn my laptop into a desktop. Easy, but I lose portability. Or, since its a 3 year old laptop with s***ty Vista on it, maybe now is the time to just get a new laptop. Anyone every changed out a laptop screen before? My laptop has been a desktop for a year. I was planning on getting a new computer and never got around to it. Now that checking email and stuff is easy on my phone, I feel less and less of a need for a laptop. I may just pick up a new desktop PC

Anyone use one of these?
I am the "gadget guy" around school and the tech department dropped off a wireless tablet from eInstruction the InterwriteMobi. Basically I can project whatever is written on the tablet for everyone to see. It will also "telestrate" notes over images and act like a mouse. I am trying to think of some projects to use it. I would prefer it be in the students hands, not mine. http://www.einstruction.com/products/inter...mobi/index.html

I believe this also ends the last of the "safe" investments, real estate. People will now understand that there are risks and values can fall. I remember buying my first house, conventional wisdom was buy more house than you could currently comfortably afford because your income will rise and the value of the home will increase. It worked wonderfully for me because A and B happened, now I realize how foolish that move may have been.

Jersey Shores is yet another reality show I will never watch. Not that I'm some high brow intellect, but it just seems stupid.,

Health Care Plan Worker Contributions
Mine would cost about that. Adding just my kids costs me $400 per month. We are a medium sized school district with the best salaries in a four county area. This is one area we lag ever so slightly behind other districts.

QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Oct 14, 2010 -> 01:34 PM) I'd guess that any legal action taken using such a law would only prosecute in cases of obvious and gross negligence or abandonment. Like, you see someone get hit by a car, laying there bleeding to death, and you say "good luck with that" and walk away. If they at least try to get help or call 911, they'd be protected. That's the way Good Samaritan laws usually work out. This is kind of like pornography, we know it when we see it, but everyone sees it in shades of the same color. Too bad we even have to think about making it a law. I know I would always render whatever aid I could.

Financial News
I've had to relearn some of Quicken. My gf and I have a joint household account, plus individual. Getting reports has been a pain. The accounts are at my bank, so transfers are easy, but it really goofs up the category stuff in Quicken. After using Quicken for 20 years, it sducks to have to relearn it. lol I have savings and investments taken out automatically when I get paid. What I had never really done before for sweeping each month. Before, I would wait until the balance built, then do something with it. I can see where doing it monthly, even if it is only $100 or $200 bucks is smarter.

NSS, I believe it was somewhere in this thread you mentioned "sweeping" money into savings each month. I started sweeping anything left in my account at the end of a pay cycle and it has resulted in many hundreds of dollars in additional savings. I suspect by the end of the year I will save a few thousand dollars extra. In the past it would have kind of accumulated and eventually I would have made a frivilous purchase without much thought. Now I find myself sticking to my spending plan a little better. Thanks.

New topic for debate
There is a major problem with my answer. I believe people should be compelled to act up to their comfort and skill level. That is impossible to quantify in a court of law. For example, someone may have taken a course in First Aid, but not feel comfortable coming to the aid of a car crash victim. It does seem criminal to me, and I use criminal specifically, for someone to stand by and watch someone suffer or die. So I'd agree with the law and hope that a jury would be able to sort out the marginal situations.

My Response to the Tea Party...thoughts?
The enemy of my enemy is my friend. So any anti-Obama and anti-Dem folks are friends to the GOP. Now some friends you will stand proudly with and have your picture taken, the tea party folks seem to be forced to use the back door.

Opt-In Fire Protection
I am still wondering if the fire department could be held liable if (it didn't they wetted down the fence line) the neighbor's house burned down because they allowed a containable fire to grow out of control. Sorry Misses O'Leary we can't respond to your barn fire, you didn't pay the fee.

My Response to the Tea Party...thoughts?
QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Oct 9, 2010 -> 06:12 PM) I would like someone to enumerate why they believe things will actually get better in the US over the next two years... Because in the compromise comes a prudent course of action. Because by examining each item closely, the wheat is separated from the chaffe. That is why dictators, and other such single voice systems have stagnated or fell behind while the US has thrived.

My Response to the Tea Party...thoughts?
QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Oct 8, 2010 -> 09:39 AM) I remember all the talk of the "peace dividend" at the end of the Clinton administration and defense spending was headed for the 12-15% range versus 20-22%, but then 9/11 happened and Iraq....and the rest is history. Of course, Japan and Germany both have had their periods of imperialism too. My Chinese students are still being taught to hate Japan because of something that happened almost 60 years ago. The "Peace Dividend" was a Reagan era promise. Basically after we "won" the cold war we could reduce our military expenses.
