  1. QUOTE (Milkman delivers @ Aug 21, 2010 -> 12:47 PM) The last post was two weeks ago, and you bumped it for that? Here's one I remember from when I was a kid: Did you hear about the new book "Little Brown Spots on the Wall" by the Chinese author, Hu Flung Pu? It was on my first page and I hadn't read the thread before. lTEACHER: Who is your favorite author? PUPIL: George Washington. TEACHER: But George Washington never wrote any books. PUPIL: You got it.

QUOTE (kjshoe04 @ Aug 21, 2010 -> 03:01 PM) It's not the 60's anymore Tex. far out man, I can dig it. So we got peace and everything? No more war to stop communism?

QUOTE (Queen Prawn @ Aug 21, 2010 -> 08:39 AM) That is cool Tex! My cross country coach in HS was a big inspiration to me, not just running but life in general. She Lives!! Great to see you posting, I hope all is well.
  4. I had them waxed a couple times and the stray hairs stopped growing back. One time the woman that was doing it wanted to shape them a bit by thinning out a few hairs between the eyebrow and my eye. OH f*** THAT HURT. Never again. The threading looks interesting. No way I could sit in the mall and have it done, too weird. And no way I will be getting my teeth whitened at a kiosk in the mall. Sit in a reclining chair smiling like a total dumbass with a blacklight shining on your teeth.
  5. The title said BAD, not tasteless. Your perspective usually changes when you have kids. Suddenly Dahl's "Another Kid in the Crawl" parody isn't as funny. Dead baby jokes don't sound so cool. And pedophile jokes just aren't funny. It's probably hardwired into our DNA somewhere.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Aug 20, 2010 -> 08:59 AM) When are the group hugs? Not so much group hugs, but hook them in the first couple weeks with some fun stuff. The motivated kids will always work a little harder. We'll push harder week three.
  7. QUOTE (Iwritecode @ Aug 20, 2010 -> 10:06 AM) spewed coffee on my keyboard Yesterday, Student "Mr. Welton, do you have a facebook?" Me "No, what's that". Student "Do you use twitter?" Me "No, what's that". Student "Damn, you don't know anything about on-line!" Me "What's on-line?"
  8. QUOTE (Alpha Dog @ Aug 20, 2010 -> 06:56 PM) So are you saying that government workers are generally smarter than private sector employees, or just your average McDonalds workers? The civil service process may weed out some, but I'd guess overall it is about the same for the McJobs*. *I believe we're taking about those that are exactly equal.
  9. QUOTE (Alpha Dog @ Aug 19, 2010 -> 11:10 PM) The Plainfield school district here wants to accelerate and increase the pay for first year principals from $116,500 per year to $121,400 per year because "many of the assistant principals we are interviewing are making more than that and wold have to take a pay cut." I read that (in an actual paper!) at dinner tonight. I would say that 6 figures for an assistant or regular principal seems like a lot, for running one school. That does seem a little high. I'm trying to figure what an equivalent position would be in the private sector. Most principals would have close to 100 employees, anywhere from 600 to over a thousand "customers". Lots of mandates and government regulations. A restaurant that will feed a thousand meals a day. Perhaps a sports program. The fixed assets in the millions that they are responsible for. A plant manager for a maquila in Mexico here would make easily that with bonuses pushing well beyond that.
  10. I haven't been able to follow a game for the past few weeks. I guess I picked a nice time.
  11. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Aug 18, 2010 -> 05:39 PM) Don't forget bloated pensions in most cases are based on bloated government wages. Are the wages for the vast majority of government workers really that high? I know we hear of some directors and stuff that are making what sounds like generous salaries, but it seems most workers are in line with private sector jobs.

I will have to change a little of the culture. Of the 4 middle schools we have the most students and the fewest runners each season. The previous coach would just have them run for twenty minutes every day. Boring.

QUOTE (maggsmaggs @ Aug 18, 2010 -> 11:43 AM) Were you a Yorkie? Coach Newton Basically borrowing a few of his strategies . . . Basically I will be recruiting, recruiting, recruiting The long green line will become the purple pack, they already have really short hair :-) It is a really short season so about 1/3 LSD, about 1/3 fartlek, and some speed work leading up to the big District meet. Working with my 7th graders on a year round running program will be the key for me next year. Now I have to take whomever comes through the door and in whatever shape they are in. Ideas? I'd love to hear them.
  14. QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Aug 18, 2010 -> 08:32 AM) Hearing what the jurors have to say, they were pretty close (11-1) on some counts. But it sounds like the jurors were confused with the evidence and time line the government presented. I'm confident on retrial they'll tighten things up, maybe present fewer witnesses, and try to be more clear in what they're presenting. One thing seems pretty clear - they all didn't buy the "Blago is just a loud moron" defense. I am wondering if Blago is smart enough to cut a deal now and if it would be accepted. His hubris may get in the way. I just do not see this going to a second trial.
  15. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Aug 17, 2010 -> 05:45 AM) And the pensions are being stripped back more and more every year. My dad just lost $300 per month from his.
  16. QUOTE (kapkomet @ Aug 16, 2010 -> 09:51 PM) That's what pensions are for, right? (serious question - teachers are highly pensioned) There is widespread fear that there will be an immigration bill where illegals will be given full citizenship and apparently social security will be amended to allow people with no service time to receive retirement benefits. Presumably, the law would be illegal if it specifies former illegals only, so it would also open the door to anyone who isn't vested to quickly become vested. I find it hard to believe that elected official will bankrupt social security to allow newly created citizens these benefits, but many intelligent people do believe it will happen.

The number one goal they have for the program this year is to increase participation. That's why they approached me. Gee, I thought it was because I was all-conference in college. The soccer has me a little intimidated but basically I have to follow the HS's system.

I received official word today that I will be coaching 7/8 grade Cross Country this year. I will also be coaching 7th grade girls soccer and probably 8th grade boys soccer. I am holding out hope for golf but the coach has done a nice job but is waffling if he wants to come back or not.
  19. I am always interested in the wide range of academic interests here at soxtalk.
  20. The local rules that are given to each player prior to the tournament clearly stated they were to be played as bunkers. But yeah, that really sucked.
  21. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Aug 14, 2010 -> 04:08 PM) Please, tell all of us peons what we apparently don't realize. One agenda is: MEXICANS are going to steal your Social Security unless you vote GOP But I'm guessing Kap has a different one
  22. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Aug 14, 2010 -> 09:19 AM) Ok. So now lets see manditory health care. Dropping the SS issue? One thing before we move on, we all need to remain vigilant that your real fears are not materialized. I doubt the Dems would be stupid enough to somehow try to pass a change to allow credit for SS service while being an illegal. Only those years worked under their own SS# should count. Nothing retroactive. Any change to that should be met with extreme resistance IMHO. On to health care and if you don't mind, every other government program. Again, someone has to work these jobs. Whomever is working the job is eligible to receive benefits. The job and income, not nationality or citizen status, determines the benefits and taxes paid. Those benefits, in the case of our lowest earning jobs, are greater than the taxes paid. A documented, US citizen, is most likely to understand and apply for those benefits. That is one reason we have illegals, the government prefers illegals from a taxes paid / benefit model. Attempts to increase mandatory minimum wages are usually met with GOP resistance. And this also highlights how dangerous the decline in political debate has become in this country. You are an intelligent person, but your understanding of the SoSec facts were as off as mine. We hear from political leaders and others that this or that will happen, but the reality is much different. It's all about emotion and reaction. My gut tells me it must be a Dem political invention.
  23. Oops, it seems that SS's post disappeared. In response to some illegals would not contribute enough to cover the minimum SS benefit. 11 years service and their minimum is $36.90 for an individual $56.10 for a family. 20 years it goes up to $380. available at http://www.ssa.gov/cgi-bin/smt.cgi So if someone becomes legal, works a minimum wage job for 11 years, they will be guaranteed $36.90 per month. I can live with that.
  24. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Aug 12, 2010 -> 11:52 AM) Trib clarifies - they are sure on 2, deadlocked on some, but have not yet begun deliberating on the wire fraud counts. Judge sent them back out to deliberate those. This jury seems to be making a career out of this case
  25. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Aug 13, 2010 -> 04:05 PM) Except that the lowest rungs aren't going to pay in enough to cover the costs for their benefits. I can't find that at the SS site either. I did find this
