  3. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Sep 17, 2009 -> 01:26 PM) Doctors aren't in unions, so its impossible for them to be making too much. Only union members make too much. I certainly believe in the concept. It is the implementation where there are a few snags. While not a Union, the insurance companies have created a price list for Doctors. So in a real sense, there are already curbs on what they can earn. They can charge market prices for those without medical insurance, which is part of our way of life. But then their patients can also choose to ban together to dictate prices. Interesting market at work.
  4. tomorrow it is back to SOuth Padre for Seafood and Song, plus a big Scout event.
  5. QUOTE (kapkomet @ Sep 17, 2009 -> 12:42 PM) If this were a Democrat politician, you'd be all alturistuc. touche Maybe not a politician, but certainly a teacher, salesperson, librarian, accountant, etc etc
  6. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Sep 17, 2009 -> 12:53 PM) So if you were told that you were going to be looking at a 30% cut in your wages, plus a huge increase in your workload, you would just go along with it? First, off, I do not believe the final plan will result in that big of a cut. But even if something that drastic occurred, will they quit and take an even bigger pay cut? What will any of those Doctors do to maintain their wages and life style? And depending on when this happens, where in this economy will they go? Financial services? Sales? Medical research? Possibly. I just do not see where their options are to quit and maintain anywhere near their salaries. And perhaps we should look at their salaries like we looked at the auto industry. Their wages are too high, benefit packages too generous, for their industry to survive, and like those well paid auto workers, the end is here.
  7. QUOTE (kapkomet @ Sep 17, 2009 -> 12:44 PM) In the small sample size I know, I would say this might be reality - there's a lot of docs that I have heard say they'd cut way back or just get out altogether. But that's a small sample. That's easy to say. But what are they going to do? Are they really going to give up the lifestyle and prestige to become ??? It's really easy to say I'd quit if they did that, it is another thing to actually quit. Hell, who here hasn't made some statement like that? Name an industry segment that would hire that many Doctors?
  8. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Sep 17, 2009 -> 11:53 AM) Nate Silver broke down the problems with this poll. Really, shouldn't "45% of doctors would quit" jump out and say "something is wrong with my polling"? Unless fervent libertarianism is overrepresented in the doctor population. After a decade of school, $$$,$$$.$$ in medical school costs, I'm going to quit if anything changes. Sorry, but I am just not believing we will see double digit, or even large single digit defections. Perhaps a rise in early retirements, but I just do not see Doctors suddenly quitting to become MonaVie independent sales consultants.
  9. I believe the real pivot point in this; some stat heads get to the extreme and believe that baseball does not need a manager making a decision, just have him call up the situation on his computer and "play the odds". On the other hand there are those that believe in an endeavor undertaken my humans, with all their frailties and weaknesses, that looking into the eyes of the players and knowing how they respond to this unique situation, is the best way to make that decision. Unique situation. Just because there are runners on 1st and 3rd with 1 out, a righty on the mound, at night, and anything else you want to factor in mathematically, it still is not that same situation. You don't know he just had a fight with his wife, or his gf promised him a Hummer, or both. You don't know where his confidence is at that moment. I'd rather have a guy up there confident he can lay down a bunt, than hoping to. Even good bunters struggle. Gut versus stat. Move the needle to either side, but you need both. For me, when computers are playing, I'll lean more towards stats, when humans are playing, I'll take the instincts of a good manager.
  10. QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Sep 17, 2009 -> 12:06 PM) You are jaded Tex. Vince is a good guy, he told Steve's wife that he'd be there for them and he was. Young gets a lot of grief, but I'll be cheering for him and I hope he finds a way to make it in the NFL. Which is uncharacteristic of me. Usually I believe everyone is good and nice and accept they are doing things for the right reasons.
  11. QUOTE (SoxFan562004 @ Sep 17, 2009 -> 11:46 AM) thanks! And for the record, you objection was noted and being discussed. And is the usual soxtalk procedure, if any warnings are issued, they will remain private.
  12. QUOTE (SoxFan562004 @ Sep 17, 2009 -> 11:42 AM) I'm so glad the owner of the site can just call a group of posters "jackasses" fixed
  13. QUOTE (SouthsideDon48 @ Sep 17, 2009 -> 11:34 AM) No, not in that situation, but I would call for the bunt in the 3rd inning if, say, the leadoff batter was the 9th batter (Getz) and he got on base. So if Getz was on base, and the next batter was Pods and the batter after that is Beckham, then I'm DEFINITELY calling for a bunt. With a well-played bunt by Pods, 1 of 2 things can happen: 1. Getz moves over to 2nd and Pods is out, and Beckham bats next. or... 2. Getz mvoes over to 2nd and Pods is safe on 1st after outrunning the bunt, flustering the opposing pitcher with 2 runners on base with 1 in scoring position and a strong bat in Backham standing in the batter's box. That's better than letting Pods try to swing and risk a double-play, which would not give Beckham the psychological edge he would've had if there was 1 baserunner on 2nd in scoring position, or 2 baserunners on base. Are we suggesting the Pods (as in the guy that is hitting .303 and 2nd most likely on the team to get a "real" hit) or a generic Pods hitting close to the team average? The .303 Pods I'm leaving up there to hit in the early and mid innings and looking really long and hard before squaring him around in the 7-8-9.
  14. You have to match the strategy to the players and their abilities or lack there of. There are a lot of ways to win a World Series, and slugging your way is one way to do it. So is hitless wonders. But don't try and fit team A into the role of team B.
  15. I am bummed that I am so f***ing jaded by athletes and public figures that my first reaction was his public relations person or the team's PR guy told him to go do this. I have zero reason to believe that in this case besides a couple decades of scumbags in sports. Damn, that makes me sad.
  16. Lots of blueberries in my fruit smoothie today
  17. I was just thinking, is there any chance that Kayne ever saw any of Swift's work? And if so, why??

QUOTE (FlaSoxxJim @ Sep 16, 2009 -> 11:45 PM) Fun stuff. Do your own work. Says the guy that saved my ass with some stats work late at night My Professor could not believe where and how I received the help He actually introduced me to another professor and told the story, four years later.
  20. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Sep 15, 2009 -> 10:18 PM) More like, a few people shouldn't be forced to pay for the entire world's health care system. A few people pay for the world's military A few people pay for the US roadways A few people pay for our water and sewer A few poeple pay for the inspection of our food and drug systems A few people pay for our police and fire protection and we can keep going on, but you get the point.

Add a few thousand more to the unemployment numbers.
  22. QUOTE (Rex Kicka** @ Sep 16, 2009 -> 08:16 AM) There are Americans willing to do those jobs after all. Provided the wages are right. But when the wages get too high, like the American auto worker, then people start criticizing and wanting to see those wages cut and benefits dropped.
  23. We'll see what happens when the economy turns around. But this is exactly why I favor a guest worker program. We should be able to regulate how many guest workers are brought in each year. Raise and lower the number based on the needs of American business and employees.
