QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Mar 24, 2009 -> 11:38 AM) Not sure where else to put this... The Border Patrol sees an issue with the dense vegetation alone some stretches of the Rio Grande that are being used as hiding places for bandits. So, they want to get rid of the vegetation in some places. Now, that idea has some problems in and of itself - it will have an effect on erosion and waterflow of the river. But, national security probably should take precedence. Here is where it gets just plain stupid. Their plan is to poison the vegetation along a pilot mile stretch. Poison? Seriously? Its a riverbank, morons, you want to poison the river? These areas are high desert or chapparal, which burn over naturally every so often anyway... why not do that? Why introduce a toxin which will have unknown negative effects, instead of using the mechanism that nature does? Ugh. The rape and plunder of the southern border area has gotten to the point where I can't get to excited over any plan. It is just brutal. The rest of the US places no value on this region at all.

I'd be in favor of dropping them all. As long as we held a lifetime edge against the Cubs

QUOTE (Reddy @ Jul 2, 2009 -> 11:16 PM) jealous. i can't even fall asleep on flights when i've gotten 3 hours of sleep the night before and i've been up for 18 hours... which was the case last time i was on a plane. brutal. Same here. On a flight from Atlanta to Myrtle Beach I lost the ability to sleep on a plane. I developed this sensation of "falling" while almost falling asleep. Falling and being at 33,000 feet is not compatible. I'll wake up with a startled look and I think I just screamed. Prior to that I was flying weekly for my work. I could fall asleep while taxiing.

The best Cuban pitching prospect, Aroldis Chapman, defected
Texsox replied to Cubano's topic in The Diamond Club
QUOTE (iamshack @ Jul 3, 2009 -> 12:24 PM) The scouting scandals occur with unknown Latin American players....these Cubans are guys that play on the World stage all year long at a professional level. All high-level baseball officials have a grasp of who these guys are, unlike some 16 year old ss from some tiny town in Venezuela that no one has really seen before. Then I wonder why there are so many questions about this guy. -
QUOTE (BearSox @ Jul 3, 2009 -> 11:58 AM) I don't even know if they got approval for a new stadium yet.... one of the Florida teams really needs to move out of Florida. Neither get good attendance (until the playoffs) and I'd prefer to see the Rays get moved mainly because they have such a gay name. Rays (of sunshine) is probably the gayest name of any team in sports. I say you move the Marlins to Orlando (keep them as the Florida Marlins) and build them a kickass stadium. Places in and around Orlando are big tourist attractions, and if you put a team there, you can get a lot of tourists in your ball park. Lets go to Universal Studios one day, and a Marlins game the next! I didn't know there were gay and straight names.

The best Cuban pitching prospect, Aroldis Chapman, defected

Let us also remember we aren't that far removed from the scouting scandals. I'm guessing the organization is going to move really carefully before opening up the check book. -
QUOTE (Milkman delivers @ Jul 3, 2009 -> 11:37 AM) What show is that? In my opinion, the best pie (although its name says it's not actually a pie) is cheesecake. I mean, everything about it seems like a pie, except its name. Twin Peaks Directed by David Lynch

What's the best seats you've ever had at the Cell?
Texsox replied to Marky Mark's topic in Pale Hose Talk
Not at the Cell, but when Milwaukee was still in the A.L. I had "Bud's seats" first row, right next to the Sox on-deck circle. Most notable that day was Ozzie had one of those days where he just crushed the ball, all right at someone or was a victim of what would later be known as a sportscenter play of the day. The fourth time he came to bat, with runners on first and third, he lined one up the middle, which was caught, and the guy at first was doubled up. Oz, running towards the dugout, takes his helmet off with two hands, flings it at the dugout wall as he was running and yells "f*** this mutherf***ing game". I replied, loudly, "his English has come a long way". I also sat in the old Milwaukee press box, which was turned into a "suite" with my son for a couple games. The company I worked for leased all their cars from Selig leasing and they took care of us a few times a year. At the Cell, never anything spectacular. -
QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Jul 3, 2009 -> 05:35 AM) That would be your conscience talking. If you have no conscience, and you live that lifestyle, you will live in euphoria until the day you get caught. I agreed with both posts. At some point, he probably passed through the guilt and figured he was past getting caught. If not, he could have been gone in the wind with all that money. Then again, perhaps he had squandered most of it.

QUOTE (DukeNukeEm @ Jul 2, 2009 -> 08:07 PM) I work for one of those boat tour companies in Chicago, I'm bombarded daily with idiocy that should have made me insane: "Can the boats sink?" - Did people learn to not say that with that whole Titanic problem? But considering the closest thing any tour boat company has legitimately had since the Eastland (100+ years ago) was the Seadog losing prop and having to beach it nothing has even gone remotely wrong with the integrity of the boats on the lake. It's Lake Michigan, not the Bering Straight. "What if the boat sinks?" - Hope there isn't one lifejacket left and you and I are the last two people without one. "What if I fall off the boat?" - Sharks eat you. "Is it free?" - I'm paid to sit here and sell you a boat ride that is free. Right. I got a funny one a couple weeks ago when Obama was in town (he flies over the lake in his helicopter so they can see what's below them easily). "Which helicopter is Obama in?" It would kind of defeat the purpose of having like 12 helicopters if they told every employee making $10 a hour off Navy Pier which one the President is in. awesome

I prefer a cobbler, from a dutch oven. Peach is a favorite. I also have made a dutch oven apple pie that is really quick and easy camp food. Cut an apple into wedges, about six from a good size apple. Wrap dough around them like a pig in a blanket. Dip that in melted butter, dump a couple cups of sugar, lots of cinnamon and a can of sprite. Cook over medium coals for an hour.

I was averaging 25-30 a year for quite a while. Choosing to go to the "bad games". Those midweek snooze fests against terrible teams. I would try to predict the smallest crowd of the season and be at that game. I also had Bulls season tix at the old stadium and for a season or two before I moved.

QUOTE (dasox24 @ Jul 2, 2009 -> 05:28 PM) That makes me think of an episode from "The Office" where Michael puts together a pickup game of basketball and automatically assumes the one black guy is good at basketball (when in fact, he's probably the worst one there). "Stanley, of course..."

QUOTE (Milkman delivers @ Jul 2, 2009 -> 10:24 AM) As much as I like to hate everything Hawk says, I believe he was spot on yesterday. He was talking about this poll and saying that it says a lot about the players today, basically how they're p*****s and care more about personal stats than winning. EDIT: Censored myself before someone else has to do it. I think the players believe they are professionals and do not need much in the way of motivation or coaching. I think it also reflects how baseball is such a business today. And just like most other people in the work force, they would rather not work for someone who is erratic and demeaning. I have worked independently for so long, and pretty much a self starter, I do not need someone yelling at me to do a better job, swearing at me, or any of that stuff. Perhaps others do. I can work hard on my own. I can also see how some players would respond better to different circumstances. Some need quiet, confidence inspiring leadership and some need a kick in the ass.

QUOTE (SoxFan1 @ Jul 2, 2009 -> 01:09 AM) It may not be an entirely stupid question, but since I'm 6'6, I ALWAYS get the "Do you play basketball?" question. Man that aggravates me. A buddy of mine, who is closer to 6' 8", would always answer, no, I'm a jockey.

QUOTE (Leonard Zelig @ Jul 2, 2009 -> 04:11 PM) I just found a book called And The Hippos Were Boiled In Their Tanks, which was co-written by Jack Kerouac and William Burroughs in 1945, 10 years before either became very well known and was just published in 2008. Each author is a character in the book and they alternate chapters telling the story from their point of view. I just started it, so I don't know if I like it, but I thought the whole concept and the fact that it sat on a shelf for over sixty years is pretty amazing, considering the success the two men achieved years after it was written. I liked it. I am also reading Desolation Angels by Kerouac. He's one of my favorite authors. Dharma Bums and On The Road are imho two of the greatest books of all time.

QUOTE (stretchstretch @ Jul 2, 2009 -> 01:45 PM) with the strides this team has made in the past weeks, across most positions, and in particular, the Rotation, I'm just not understanding why so many feel making the playoffs is solely dependent upon CQs return??? I know you asked specifically about CQ's return, but to answer in a general manner. A lot of my reasoning was when I tore off the calendar page I saw July not September. It's a long season, with a lot more baseball to play. Hot streaks come and go. I will predict at least two or three more sub .500 stretches as well. I would have preferred a choice that allowed me to say I was 33% confident in winning the division. And that is waaaaay up from a month ago when I figured this was going to be a "when do the Bears start" kind of season.

QUOTE (Nunnigan @ Jul 2, 2009 -> 01:32 PM) Getting fed up, I signaled to my brother and mom, who were sitting in the seats across the asile, to bring over a flight attendant. All they did was laugh at what I had to put up with. That's what my family would have done. Actually they would have sent over two more drinks.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jul 2, 2009 -> 01:51 PM) Would his creditors have the right to any profits from any book deal? He owes like $170 billion. He's going to need some outside helping getting the book deal together, and research. He's selling investments at $25,000 per unit. Already some of the investors have seen returns as high as 200%.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jul 2, 2009 -> 11:27 AM) It's always more complicated than that with kids involved. True. Even the simple solutions become complicated. However, SS is dead on correct. Especially for a family whose problems will be played out on the front pages of local newspapers. This global adulterer managed to take what would have been a complicated, state wide scandal and moved it into a more complicated, international scandal, for his family.
