What it would take for me to switch parties . . .
I though a thread about switching parties would be interesting. Even better if we could keep it reasonable and without bashing. For me to vote more Republican, the party would need to Return to pre Reagan fiscal conservatism, balanced budgets for example. Stop the activist judges rhetoric Stop blaming the media and trying to be a victim Support a guest worker program that help American business and treats the workers fairly without offering budget breaking benefits.

GOP, RNC to rebrand Democrats as 'Socialists'
I love the whole redistribution of wealth concept. Do we really want to live in a country where the budget is based on the poorest taxpayers and what they can afford? Do we really want to live in a society that allows people to starve? Stop financial aid for education? You earn more, you pay more in taxes, you live better. When we stop public health programs that target low income people, TB rebounds and guess what, the wealthy catch it also. Nice phrase, but meaningless when analyzed.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ May 13, 2009 -> 09:14 AM) They learned this from the Democrats who spent an entire eight years labeling every Republician as a Bush clone, and now are calling them all Rush clones. I didn't see any protests then... And you won't. We've accepted labels regardless of accuracy. Liberal media, known lier, activist judges, etc. Sure does beat actually thinking

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ May 13, 2009 -> 10:02 AM) Iran did get something out of it... Notice how quickly we went quiet about their nuclear program? It comes up from now and again, but nothing like it did when Iran was leading the violence in Iraq. Like I said, nothing in fact to base this on, but I think those two things are connected. I do not think I want to know some of the deals we have made.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ May 13, 2009 -> 09:28 AM) I have said that I believe we have been dealing through the backdoor with Iran for a few years now, based on how the violence in Iraq just sort of stopped out of no where. I don't have any evidence, just a feeling. violence in Iraq or Iran stopped?

Lillibridge the leader to go back to Charlotte
QUOTE (Dick Allen @ May 13, 2009 -> 09:17 AM) Yeah, the Sox were only 5th in the AL in runs scored last year. WALKER HAS SKATED BY WITH ZERO RESULTS. Don't let the facts get in the way of a good bashing. Walker has been the hitting coach since the middle of 2003. In his 5 full seasons of being the coach the offense in rank of runs scored 2004-3rd 2005-9th 2006-3rd 2007-14th 2008-5th During the same timeframe, Don Cooper, who walks on water and the team ERA ranking 2004-12th 2005-tied for 1 2006-10th 2007-12th 2008-6th One is bowed down to and the other is slammed mercilessly. If you look at the results, things may appear like they should be a little different. Please don't blame USCF as the reason as White Sox pitchers generally have better splits at home. OK, add Cooper to the list. Not certain where you picked up the ZERO RESULTS from?

Lillibridge the leader to go back to Charlotte
The two biggest enigmas in Chicago sports are Mr. Walker and Mr. Pulford. No one has milked jobs longer, on less results, than those two. Well maybe Shipps, but at least he entertains us.

Interesting Oz quote about Gavin Floyd
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ May 13, 2009 -> 08:32 AM) He looks like a guy who is trying to justify a long term contract extention with every perfect pitch. He needs to get it through his head to get it over the plate early and let his stuff take care of the rest, just like last year. Good point. It seems so easy from here, yet so many players, of all abilities, have that same struggle after signing a contract.

My pet conspiracy theory
QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ May 12, 2009 -> 01:28 PM) That's not a default, that is a variable rate instrument. Its a known outcome - nothing to insure. As you mentioned earlier, there should be nothing to insure here, so we are kind of grasping at straws. I was about to suggest it would be like buying hurricane insurance in Illinois. There are only two things to insure here, the principle and/or the interest. It seems to me that it makes more sense for there to be a secondary market built around the interest than the principle.

Drew Peterson arrested
QUOTE (longshot7 @ May 12, 2009 -> 01:05 PM) I know a little about the case... it's pretty solid, that's why they took 18 months before making the arrest. They have no witness and no body. I'm not certain how solid that can ever be.

My pet conspiracy theory
QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ May 12, 2009 -> 10:38 AM) Second part - I don't see where you are going there. The treasury reserves the right on some bonds issued before 1985 to stop paying interest before the bonds mature. These were at a very high interest rate, think double digit interest. If they do call those, and stop paying the interest, could that be considered a "default". And it has been happening annually for a few years.

My pet conspiracy theory
QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ May 12, 2009 -> 10:13 AM) If the US Treasury changed the underlying bond guarantee structure, its still not a default. Its a default if they cannot make obligated coupon payments and/or they cannot pay back the principle. Unless we see the terms of the insurance, are we certain any of those scenarios would not be covered? I am thinking your car does not need to be totaled, for insurance to kick in. By calling the bonds, are they not making the obligated coupon payments?

My pet conspiracy theory
QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ May 12, 2009 -> 10:03 AM) CDS swaps only insure the par value of the bond, not the interest coupons - at least the ones I am familiar with. Swaps are one-off contracts, so I suppose one could write stipulations into it regarding coupon non-payment. Then shall we explore a type of "default" similar to that in the 1930s when Bonds were no longer guaranteed in gold? Perhaps this is insurance that the US T will not make fundamental changes in the terms like increasing the time to yield? Am I sounding like an idiot yet? I am such a small time investor, and this is clearly big time issues.

My pet conspiracy theory
I'm not one of the finance guys around here but, IIRC, bonds issued prior to 1985 could be called without the treasury paying the full interest. Perhaps this applies to those bonds?

Drew Peterson arrested
It would seem that having the law commonly referred to as the "Drew Peterson" law, will also work in his favor. I appreciate living in a country where it is very rare for an innocent person to be convicted of any crime, especially one as serious as murder. However, it is maddening that wealth, fame, and access tends to warp the playing field or that the laws protect the guilty.

Just the pitching staff
Thinking about your post, there is a range of options, albeit a small range, based on the available resources. This is one that has potential to work here in May. Thinking ahead, at some point it will become what is best for development, not trying to win today. This list then becomes obsolete and someone like Colon may be dispensable. Which highlights the kind of moves that K-Dubya and Ozzie have to be thinking about. K-Dubya has to be thinking on a longer horizon than Oz, who is thinking on a longer horizon than many fans on a message board who want to win it all, today.

QUOTE (lostfan @ May 12, 2009 -> 08:34 AM) I have no information to base that on, just what I think is an understanding of how their government thinks. Now the ball is kind of in our court and they expect us to do something, I read it as a response to Obama's overtures a couple months ago. It certainly seems plausible. I'm surprised no one else is talking about that.

Interesting theory, have you seen anyone with more information make that claim? I'd love to read about that.
