Sox / Rays talking Jermaine Dye deal
QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Nov 21, 2008 -> 03:38 PM) the bigger question is the years and if you could get him to bight on a 3yr 75-80M deal you make the move, imo. Quentin/Manny/Thome/Konerko would be a sick 3-4-5-6. Manny on a three year deal would be interesting and I'd be down with that. Manny on his last contract, I'm not. Matter of fact, I'd love to have Manny on his next to last contract. I just doubt he will sign less than a 5 and more likely a 6.

These Are a Few of My Favorite Things
QUOTE (FlaSoxxJim @ Nov 21, 2008 -> 03:25 PM) I have not, and I've done 'em a bunch of ways. Deep fried, smoked, paper bagged, brined, and roasted over a campfire. Hip me to the trash can turkey. We've done this several times, always with some great results. It will take a little work to make the cooker. Start with a trash can or similar drum. In theory a galvanized coating would be dangerous, but I've known many people that use a new galvanized container. Fashion 4 tubes for charcoal out of hardware cloth/chicken fencing. They should be about the length of the cooking container. Hang them over the sides and equally spaced out on the inside. Now figure out a way to suspend the turkey in the middle. We've basically suspended a rod from a cross piece, but I've seen stakes driven into the ground as well. Use a chimney to light the charcoal, fill the tubes, place a pan under the turkey to catch the drippings and possible some meat, and cover. 3-4 hours for a medium size bird. I also witnessed someone basically turning a garbage can into a giant Dutch Oven and just piled charcoal around the outside and on the lid.

QUOTE (Kalapse @ Nov 21, 2008 -> 03:25 PM) My problem is with your insinuation that people here have trouble coming to grips with this truth. I do not believe that insinuation was there, if it was, it was unintentional.

Sox / Rays talking Jermaine Dye deal
QUOTE (Kalapse @ Nov 21, 2008 -> 03:08 PM) You're making blanket statements without any real evidence. No one rips a player for being represented by Boras, people hate Boras because he's a dirty mother f***er who loves to bend the rules and because of this the Sox refuse to sign his clients, nobody who I would call a knowledgeable sports fan rips on a player because he looks to make as much money as possible. I can't remember anyone hating on Crede because he was represented by Boras, there was a lot of frustration but no actual animosity towards him due to his representation. Hell Derek Lowe is represented by Boras and is looking for $16M a year, there's more than a few people on this board who have mentioned Lowe as a possible target of the Sox's this offseason and now that it looks like there's next to no chance of him coming here i don't see anyone going after Lowe, calling him greedy and cursing his name. Again, My point is baseball is a business and in fairness, fans should treat both sides equally in that. Dye possibly being traded seemed like a great example. Great individual, has been playing fairly well, accepted less to play for the Sox, basically been a perfect Sox player. No one, including myself, is suggesting the team should show any loyalty. Now when we look at some players and the contracts they are looking for, we should remember that. Many posters already do, some do not. I am surprised that caused controversy. If anything I expected a giant D'Oh!

Sox / Rays talking Jermaine Dye deal
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Nov 21, 2008 -> 03:04 PM) I will shocked if one person changes their opinion of Joe Crede (good or bad) based on the contract he gets this off season. The only way that changes if he comes out and rips the White Sox for some reason this winter or spring. I only meant that we will have lost two starters this century, not that he would be treated the same way.

QUOTE (DukeNukeEm @ Nov 21, 2008 -> 02:55 PM) Whatever, you're just changing argument form post to post. Nobody here is rooting for Jermaine Dye to get traded because we want JD gone, his value has peaked and now we can something pretty good for him. I'm done. I am not changing. I pointed this out that baseball is a business and it should be considered a business for both sides. You just jumped to conclusions. You will be back we always come back

Sox / Rays talking Jermaine Dye deal
QUOTE (Kalapse @ Nov 21, 2008 -> 02:56 PM) What players? Magglio? Who else? The extenuating circumstances surrounding the Ordonez ordeal make it moot. It had nothing to do with him going elsewhere for more money, I think most people can wrap their minds around that and except it, it's the way the whole situation played out. And even after all that bulls*** I still don't think nearly as many people harbor ill-will towards Magglio as you make you seem. What players, how about every Boras client? I'm sorry, I thought I've read here that certain players were greedy, asking too much money, not caring about what their contract does for their team, etc. I stand corrected if no one can recall players being taken to task for their salary demands.

Sox / Rays talking Jermaine Dye deal
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Nov 21, 2008 -> 02:50 PM) How many people hate Robin Ventura on this message board for leaving as a free agent? Just sayin. We haven't lost too many via free agency, so its been a short list. Maggs is about the only starter I can think of this century who bolted. Crede will be next. But I could also toss in the mix any player who looks for the biggest paycheck and we call them greedy. Talk about how they should look for a chance to win, etc. Read the Boras comments for examples. It's a business and we shouldn't ask one side (owners) to treat it like a business, then expect players to sign for less, be loyal, etc. thereby not treating it like a business.

Sox / Rays talking Jermaine Dye deal
QUOTE (DukeNukeEm @ Nov 21, 2008 -> 02:48 PM) Are we supposed to mourn the loss of Jermaine Dye instead of being excited about John Danks, Carlos Quentin, Dayan Viciedo, Gordon Beckham etc. etc.? Message to Jermaine Dye (if hes traded): Thanks so much JD, you've been huge for us the past 3 years and have shattered everyone's expectations of you. No matter what team you go to you'll recieve a standing ovation every time you come to the South Side. I hope you dont take getting traded personally, you know that baseball is a business and that sometimes you have to give up a pretty important piece to get something you really want in return. What I am saying (again) is we rip players who leave via free agency, call them greedy, etc. I think they deserve the exact same understanding we give the team when they trade someone. So while no one here is mourning the loss of Dye, neither should we get pissed when a player leaves on their own. You know the same feeling both ways. Tit for Tat. What's good for the goose is good for the gander. I don't know how many different ways I can say it. This shows there are no loyalties in baseball. So fans should not expect loyalty from players and not teams. It's all a business.

Sox / Rays talking Jermaine Dye deal
QUOTE (DukeNukeEm @ Nov 21, 2008 -> 02:45 PM) When we took on Jermaine Dye he was an oft-injured OF who people were afraid of. Now he's one of the best offensive players in the AL (and the numbers back me up on this). And in his honor we should rename stuff like this Dye Posts, you know, outta right field . . .

Sox / Rays talking Jermaine Dye deal
QUOTE (DukeNukeEm @ Nov 21, 2008 -> 02:41 PM) Are you kidding me? This is ridiculous, remember when we almost traded Dye to Boston but didn't because we weren't going to get the value we wanted for him? Baseball is a business, you can take your feel good s*** where you stick with players past their peak value and wonder a year from now what you were thinking and I'll take my stance of being proactive. I love Jermaine Dye, but we've got to do what's best for the team. I'm so so so so soooooooooooooo happy you dont run the White Sox. Then you are missing my point. I don't rip a player when they leave via free agency. I do realize it is a business and the business goes both ways. I'm glad someone who can read runs the Sox.

Sox / Rays talking Jermaine Dye deal
QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Nov 21, 2008 -> 02:38 PM) Why? Aren't you a proponent of what is done on the field is really all that matters? You can't argue his numbers. So what if he doesn't try all the time, right? He still puts up bigger numbers going half-assed than almost everyone else at full steam. And IMHO, This will be his last contract, he's asking long term and will get it *and* at a sizable per year You are correct, he goes half ass I predict, after signing his last contract that half assed will become 1/3 ass, then 1/4 ass etc. Too much money for a guy that as you said, plays half assed. As he gets older, he will need to be "all ass" just to come close to justify his asking price.

QUOTE (103 mph screwball @ Nov 21, 2008 -> 02:36 PM) Dye will be thought of highly here for decades. Because we dumped him. If he showed the same loyalty, and left on his own, we'd be talking Maggs level hate. /just sayin'

QUOTE (FlaSoxxJim @ Nov 21, 2008 -> 02:32 PM) I threaten to do a turducken every year but I have yet to follow through on it. We will be tent camping in north Florida as we do every Thanksgiving. But we don't scrimp on the food and we've gotten very good at slow roasting a turkey over a campfire. I plan on being drunk and happy for a good portion of the long holiday weekend. Have you ever done a trash can turkey?

QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Nov 21, 2008 -> 02:21 PM) The Manny talk is interesting, even if Boras is his agent. KW's had a megaboner for Manny for a long time. Then that would help KW to follow my best advice, f*** Manny. I'm not a fan of Manny.

Sox / Rays talking Jermaine Dye deal
I have to laugh at how quickly we accept Dye, World Series MVP, signed a contract for less on the free agent market, etc. leaving and we wave goodbye so quickly. Love that loyalty. I could imagine the howls of protest if he said he wanted a trade.

Al Sharpton, before and after Obama
QUOTE (Alpha Dog @ Nov 21, 2008 -> 02:16 PM) And when Michael Steele becomes head of the RNC and Sharpton or Jessie refers to HIM as a 'house negro' or an 'uncle Tom', what then? I just want consistency. If this 'toned down' Al is the future, great! That puts his fearmongering side out of commission. I want to see him then continue with this new approach when Steele does something he doesn't approve of. Then if you want consistency, then you wanted the Uncle Tom and House n***** talk to continue? If the new behavior is to continue, then it should be applauded, not jeered and criticized. But right now you are basically pointing to a good thing and trying to make it look bad. So I go back to my statement that a toned down Al Sharpton will make some people unhappy. It takes away a target for their attacks. So no you really don't want it to continue. You want him to revive it so you can call him a hypocrite and post ten links.

QUOTE (Kenny Hates Prospects @ Nov 21, 2008 -> 01:03 PM) You can't compare baseball internationally to basketball. Basketball is truly an international sport now and the talent level is much deeper. Baseball is a North American, Latin American, and Japanese sport. I guess I forgot about all the other great Chinese basketball players So what makes a Cuban player better than a French player in baseball?

Partially debone a turkey, stuff that with a deboned duck, then stuff that with a deboned chicken. From there, you can add a nice stuffing.

Al Sharpton, before and after Obama
QUOTE (Alpha Dog @ Nov 21, 2008 -> 01:55 PM) Well, I guess Sharpton 'changed' his mind about the use of 'house negro'. And some people, evidently you, will be unhappy and disappointed with Sharpton's toned down, less radical rhetoric. I like it.

Having the cash for FA and actually getting FAs signed are two very different things. I'm not enthusiastic about a strategy that revolves around shopping and outbidding anyone for a player's services. Perhaps if I was the Yankees or Red Sox, but not for the Sox.
