What do these stats tell you
QUOTE (jasonxctf @ Nov 18, 2008 -> 11:27 AM) but why lower with Obama then with Kerry? Because they are two different candidates. Some people are independents and do not vote 100% down party lines. Why did McCain not get the nomination in 2000 but did in 2008? Why did Bush the elder not get reelected? Why did Carter not get reelected? Why did Clinton's numbers change from election to election? Why did Reagan's numbers change? Why did Obama's numbers go higher in Florida or Ohio? Because events change, people change, and candidates change. The issues facing the country change.

What do these stats tell you
QUOTE (jasonxctf @ Nov 18, 2008 -> 10:03 AM) from fivethirtyeight.com Southern States- % of White Vote From 2004 to 2008, there are 15 southern states examined. The examination was on what % of white voters went for Obama in 2008, versus Kerry in 2004. Of the 15... 5 states voted for Obama in a higher %, 6 states voted for Obama at the same % and 4 states voted for Obama at a lower %. The 4 states whose white voters supported Obama at a lower %, then they did Kerry in 2004, were... Arkansas- 6% lower Mississippi- 7% lower Alabama- 8% lower Louisiana- 10% lower What do these stats tell us about these 4 states, if anything at all? That the Bible belt is socially conservative and prefers a socially conservative President?

Piracy around the Horn of Africa
QUOTE (DBAHO @ Nov 18, 2008 -> 09:54 AM) Well my point is it's such an important trade route, that piracy really shouldn't be happening anywhere in that region. You would think that stopping piracy would be easier than stopping terrorism though. That is part oif the problem, it is more of a pleasure route and the pirates have been targeting private boats. And since it is a huge mix of nationalities getting kidnapped and boarded, no one country felt enough of a responsibility to do more than half hearted attempts. Even those half hearted attempts a few years back inproved the area for a while. 12 to 18 months ago, private ships were getting through without any incidences. That changed the past year as the attacks began targeting more commercial ships and people started getting killed. The US is involved and patrolling. The UN has authorized military ships to enter Somali waters if in persuit of criminals. Private boats, and we are talking cruisers in anywhere from 28' to 45' boats, would form a diamond pattern and try to produce a radar signature of a much larger ship. They would travel at night without nav lights. Drive past Burhnam Harbor in the summer time and pick out which 25' to 35' boats are pirate boats. That's the problem the Somalis have. That's even if they want to solve the problem. Also consider drug runners in the Florida keys with go fast boats. The DEA and Coast Guard has been battling that for years.

Piracy around the Horn of Africa
QUOTE (DBAHO @ Nov 18, 2008 -> 09:47 AM) Where's Jack Sparrow when you need him. It's a developing issue and one that needs greater attention. Doubt it will get it though. Already has. The security corridor is recognized by many navies, including the US. But much like Iraq still has terrorists, it doesn't get cured over night.

Piracy around the Horn of Africa
One of my favorite magazines is Latitudes and Attitudes, aka Lats and Atts. They publish pirate reports every month and that area has been the worse area on the planet for several years now. Basically, much like you see full time RVers travelling the country, imagine living on a sailboat and traveling the globe in retirement. Basically that is my current retirement plan. Here are the plans for a security corridor for "Pirate Alley" http://mags.latsandatts.net/showmag.php?mi...n=true#/page20/ http://mags.latsandatts.net/showmag.php?mi...n=true#/page24/ in Venezuela World wide piracy report http://mags.latsandatts.net/showmag.php?mi...n=true#/page28/ Seems like the pages are one or two off. Page 28 of the magazine has the piracy report

Christmas Wish Lists
QUOTE (FlaSoxxJim @ Nov 14, 2008 -> 02:37 PM) I suppose if it were Christmas, you'd hang ornaments on it! I know we've only known each other 4 weeks and 3 days, but to me it seems like 9 weeks and 5 days.

Any advice...
Holy crap what an opportunity! Prime of your life, excellent job skills, no major debt, and the freedom to do almost anything. For the next two three years do something f***ing amazing. Pick a cause. Get involved in something real and make it happen. Concentrate on a job somewhere you always wanted to travel to. Go help some people that need it. Go help some animals that no one is helping Go save some land Stop an injustice or start one. Get a job on a cruise ship or private yacht Worry about your career in a few more years, worry about your life now. Kids and mortgages will happen soon enough. You truly are at a great point in your life. Grab it and do something amazing with it. You will not regret the things you do nearly as much as you will regret the things you did not do.

The Video Rental Thread
Since we have a great films thread, I thought a companion thread would be interesting for the home crowd. I just watched Hollywood Shuffle last night, very funny in a retro sort of way. Great social commentary from a not too distant past in Hollywood and the roles that were available for black actors. Watch for Wayans in what is probably his first big movie.

Christmas Wish Lists
QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Nov 18, 2008 -> 12:10 AM) 48 pairs of socks and a new pair of shoes I can wash my socks all I want to right now, but they still come out of the drier crusty with godknowswhat secretions out of my feet and these cheap $10 shoes I currently have. I'm going to give my old ones to my brother/give them to the Salvation Army/throw them away. there's other stuff too, but that's something a lot of people probably don't have on their lists. Casual, business casual, or dress? When I first had to wear suits everyday, I hated spending what seemed like way too much money on dress socks and bought cheap. Give me the three pairs for $5. And even then, I was looking for a sale. Then I received as gifts some super nice socks. Damn, my feet were happy, I could dance, and had b-ball moves like Jordan. OK, I couldn't dance and the moves were more like Jordan Danks. Now, especially when hiking and backpacking I have top of the line socks that I consider equipment. Money well spent.

Obama Removing Prisoners from Gitmo
QUOTE (bmags @ Nov 17, 2008 -> 09:53 PM) Couldn't disagree more, tex. One of the biggest stains on the United States ever, used against us constantly in foreign affairs negotiations and the new guy comes in and stands strong that he will come up with a way to deal with them morally and legally. Every day GITMO remains operating as is, is another disgraceful day to America's reputation. Interesting, I agree with your entire post. The only disagreement is the timing. I'd prefer he wait to be President and then begin making decisions, after he actually becomes President and has all the info. I can't wait for him to be the new guy. Bottom line. I prefer a leader who gathers all the facts, or at least as many as possible, before making a decision. WMD in Iraq Y'all prefer a shoot from the hip, manage from the gut type of guy. Damn, I thought I was the Texan

Obama Removing Prisoners from Gitmo
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Nov 17, 2008 -> 08:36 PM) There is no information that I can imagine And I can't imagine any either, but I leave the possibility open that there could be.

Obama Removing Prisoners from Gitmo
Whoa. I am not necessarily a fan of Gitmo, but I really wish he waited until he was President and presumably receives "the rest of the story". I am thinking, guessing, hoping, that there is more information that Obama does not have that may come into this decision. So basically, I wish he would slow the f*** down and stfu until he has a couple days in office.

This should be so easy
http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/metrop...an/6115223.html This is an outrage. This should be very quick and effective. Commit a violent crime and adios. I'd also like to deport all native born citizens that are convicted, but that would be impracticable.
