Job Hunt Thread
QUOTE (SoxFan1 @ Jan 29, 2012 -> 06:13 PM) ESPN really makes me not want to potentially work for ESPN in the future. Unfortunately for that industry I'm sure their pay and opportunities is some of the best out there.

Job Hunt Thread
Had to send in my official start date for after I graduate, and my boss and friends keep telling me to take some time off before starting work. I settled on just taking 1 week off, and my friends think I'm crazy. But I won't have much money to travel, most of my friends don't live around where my family moved (most of my closest friends are 45 mins away, or are staying on campus for the summer), and my first year of work will be a ton of work trying to get more familiar with the technology I work on, and thus I'd have a better start on my assigned project which pretty much is going to be my life for a year or two, and if done well could lead to big opportunities within the company (working on CI/lean thinking projects which the CIO has been huge on the past few years, and as an intern I did more in this area than many teams already).

QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Feb 1, 2012 -> 02:16 PM) Cochrane I assume? Yup, I know they own Cly's, Firehaus, and Red Lion (used to be Station). They raided Firehaus what seemed like nightly for a few weeks.

QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Feb 1, 2012 -> 02:12 PM) Yup. They randomly decide to enter, sometimes wearing uniform, sometimes just a badge cleverly hidden inside their jacket, which is what the guy was wearing when I got busted for a $260 ticket 10 years ago. (God I'm getting old) The funniest story was once we are Station 211 on Mug Night and the bar got raided. Everyone realized and immediately stepped away from their tables. The Bulls happened to be playing the Lakers in the 4th, so everyone under 21 crowded around the TV to "watch" the game. This was post-MJ, pre-DRose so not many people were intently following them. The cops just walked around the bar, tables were filled with unattended mugs filled with beer, while all these kids were just watching the game, obviously under 21, but not close enough to alcohol to bust them. Hahaha that's great. My dad talked about how when he went to U of I the bar would announce their would be a raid in 20 mins and everyone under 21 would leave, the cops would wait then go in, check everyone's id's (as a bunch of people stood outside), then the cops would come back outside and tell everyone to go back in. Oh simpler times...

Catch-All Anything Thread
QUOTE (Tex @ Feb 1, 2012 -> 12:42 PM) No doubt some cops go into dick mode right away when they know they are checking IDs. I worked checking IDs in a Wisconsin border bar when the drinking age was 18 versus 21 in Illinois. We only saw the cops when they were pissed at us for something, or there had been another crash of drunk kids coming back into Illinois. But you know the attitude you get at the door, I couldn't imagine being a cop and wading into that. The cops here have been in a feud with a local bar owner who owns a few of the more popular bars, which has led to the cops to raid pretty much only those bars for a period of time.

QUOTE (gatnom @ Feb 1, 2012 -> 09:19 AM) They certainly aren't, and I know from experience as part of my job is checking ID's. However, when they "busted" me, I was stone cold sober, and they still treated me like trash. I wasn't too happy about that. I've been veryyyy close to getting busted before, luckily I had some friends who were 21 ahead of me and called out that a raid was happening. The cops then proceeded to check all the ID's of the 21 year olds, and kept questioning them thinking they were fakes apparently. Fortunately for me, their insane behavior led to me being able to slip out the door.

QUOTE (Rex Hudler @ Jan 31, 2012 -> 10:52 PM) I think it is more they quit posting during the games, which probably stems from frustration. Most likely this, just look at threads like the NBA one where multiple posters will be breaking down in agony and you go check the score and see the Bulls are up by 6 or 8 points, people like to overreact.

2012 Cuban signees thread Cespedes/Soler/Concepcion
QUOTE (bucket-of-suck @ Jan 31, 2012 -> 11:43 PM) Cespedes- Cubs Soler - Red Sox Concepcion - White Sox Cespedes- Yankees Soler - Cubs Concepcion - White Sox Soler is the guy I want, along with Concepcion, and I think Cespedes is too old for what Theo is looking for in prospects. Concepcion seems like a typical Sox move.

Relationship Advice Thread
QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Jan 31, 2012 -> 10:52 PM) This was my initial reaction as well. Mark, we missing any other details? Yea that popped out at me to. Even at only 3 months, if she felt like the relationship was going somewhere then she would've consulted him a bit first (not saying that her decision depended on him though, 3 months isn't that long).

QUOTE (fathom @ Jan 31, 2012 -> 08:23 PM) It's not you Boogua, it's just that so man Illini fan seems to think every ref and announcer hates them. Heck, Bardo has done some of their games in the past, and when Lavin used to do games, he couldn't have praised Weber more. I feel bad for Big 10 fans who haven't had the pleasure of having their team face Duke with Vitale doing the game. I always theorized that Vitale's voice would always go out because he sucked on Coach K's dick too much during the game.

QUOTE (fathom @ Jan 31, 2012 -> 08:16 PM) Spartans better hope Draymond is ok. They won't win many games the rest of the way if he's out. Yea this game showed how weak they can be without him.

QUOTE (Boogua @ Jan 31, 2012 -> 08:21 PM) I missed most of the game, but caught the last 5 minutes or so and he called the Henry carry violation "a great call". I mean, it's a carry violation. I don't know what was so special about it. And when Brandon Paul got fouled at the end he said Paul was lucky to get the call as it was happening. Maybe it's true, but I didn't hear him say things about the Spartans. And how is it paranoia? It was just a question/observation. I'm sure it's in reference to Illini fans "always" calling out refs, complaining about the seeding they get, etc.

QUOTE (fathom @ Jan 31, 2012 -> 08:19 PM) Just ironic cause Tirico could not have been a big supporter of Illinois in the game against Ohio St. Some Illini fans are ridiculous (I like to think they are the Cubs fan portion ) but I think the population of them as a whole get bashed on here pretty badly.

7-Year Old Girl Cut From Baseball Team
QUOTE (knightni @ Jan 31, 2012 -> 07:58 PM) I think that the general existence of softball for only girls and baseball for only boys is sexism as well. Why can't both sexes have their own baseball teams? Softball, while competitive is not the same as baseball. What do high school and college athletics groups have against women's baseball? Well if you open up softball for guys and girls, how many girls would actually make the cut then? On average, guys are physically stronger than girls and the level of play would be drastically different. And budget and interest Im sure are the biggest reasons why girl only baseball teams don't exist at high schools. Maybe a county could get a team together, but each high school would be tough to field a girls team.

7-Year Old Girl Cut From Baseball Team
QUOTE (Milkman delivers @ Jan 31, 2012 -> 06:42 PM) That sounds like it's straight from an after-school special, or at least Lifetime. Playing in a team sport has greatly altered my life, just think about how you learn to communicate, work as a team, achieve goals, deal with failure, with success, etc. I'm not saying everyone has to play baseball or one specific sport, but children should be encouraged to play some sort of sport throughout their life. Providing these opportunities to everyone is crucial imo, not saying that all the bad players need to be on the team, but a secondary team/league should be encouraged, or go find another sport to participate in.

7-Year Old Girl Cut From Baseball Team
Is it really so bad to make specific sports guys or girls only? I understand that some may want to play even though they are a different gender, but guys playing field hockey could be completely unfair, as men and women are just built different physically. I couldn't imagine boys playing on our high school softball team, it would end up mostly just being guys playing with a few girls (probably mostly pitchers) left.

QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Jan 31, 2012 -> 02:41 PM) In high school, friends would always talk about going there cause they didn't really check IDs. I think when the whole area's economy depends on the college kids, they tend to be a bit more lenient. And they make tons of cash on the drinking tickets as you said. Proving you are 19 is also easier than 21. That being said, there is absolutely zero reason why a 19-year old should be let into a place like Kams or COs (back in my day). Maybe Murphys or Legends when they serve food, but that's about it. Stop asking these questions! Just let us have our fun

2011 Income Tax Season
QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Jan 30, 2012 -> 10:06 AM) I keep savings in an online savings account that beats anything at any normal bank. Paying 1.25% right now, has been as high as 3.5%. Still nothing great, and I still don't keep a ton in there (once I build up enough to do something with, I do something with it), but I like to keep a cushion of cash just in case and 1.25% is better than zero. I know my brother has a credit union account that currently is around 3.5%, but has been as high as 6% in the past few years. He's looking at another credit union that is above 4% right now apparently. There are decent ways to make money of your cash still, it just requires more work and effort to get it.

2011 Income Tax Season
QUOTE (lostfan @ Jan 30, 2012 -> 09:58 AM) Are you using Schwab too? I see it the same way... plus... if you had it in a savings account what kind of piss-poor interest rate would it have anyway? Yup, they are one of 3 brokerages I have accounts with (Optionshouse for my main personal investments, and Vanguard for mutual funds). I bought some stock through my Schwab account since I had some cash in there left over from my Europe trip (tehy offer free ATM usage around the world, best account ever for travelers). Couldn't you just set it up so that every paycheck that "extra" amount is put into a savings account specified to invest, or you can put it into a CD, or something. If you already have a brokerage account you could just send a monthly amount extra to it.

The Finer Things In Life
My roommates decided to go out to downtown Champaign instead of staying on campus this past Friday, and man do the more "upscale" bars make drinks stronger. My roommate went up to the bar and ordered us rum and cokes and he described the pour as this: "rum, rum, rum, and a sip of coke to add color." That said, fun night out, lots of drinking including a few Dead Guy Rogue Ales which tasted excellent while hammered.
