2011 MLB Catch-All Thread
QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Mar 21, 2011 -> 09:48 AM) I guess you are right. He just has sucked pretty bad recently, so it's not a move I expect a WS contender to make. If Beckham went down, it would be expected that the Sox would go after a Castillo type target, especially since we have no depth behind Beckham unless you really want Teahen starting there (and I don't even consider Lillibridge an option).

QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Mar 21, 2011 -> 10:00 AM) I guess the Phillies have signed Castillo. A desperate move like that makes you think that the Utley injury is pretty serious. Desperate? They get him at league min for the year, if he can play at replacement level that's a pretty damn good pickup.

So what happens with Sprint now? I figured they were going to merge with TMobile.

U.S. launches airstrikes on Libya
QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Mar 21, 2011 -> 08:47 AM) Its generally a good idea in any foreign country, to avoid the mobs. Avoid any sort of civil conflict situations. I ended up accidentally being in the middle of the Indian equivalent of a flash mob once - apparently a construction worker was killed (not unusual, safety there for such things is a joke), and so all the other workers decided to take to the street and stop traffic, and pile up bricks and rocks everywhere, yelling and screaming. I made a quick exit from the area. Yea, I would of course avoid all situations like that, I know that I could easily become a target since I will stand out pretty well, and I just don't want to deal with any complications like that. Im there as a tourist, and I just want to see the sights and explore the city (Marrakech), hopefully I will have a trip without any complications (it is only for 3 nights).

U.S. launches airstrikes on Libya
I signed up for auto alerts on safety levels for tourists in Morocco from the US Govt, and got one a few days ago saying that there would be protests in almost all major cities during the time I will be there. Im sure hoping it stays civil and the situation doesn't explode while Im there. The email did advise that it is fine for tourists to still go there, but to avoid the protests, because even though they are planned to be civil that violence could always breakout.

I know I'll be going through that in a year. Hell, sort of going through that now as I finish up my term abroad, luckily I have a month of travel before I go back.

That was the craziest episode of Shameless yet, and loving the scene where Emmy Rossum tries on a the clothes and shows off her tits a ton. I am in love with this show, not very often do you find a show where tehy combine drama, nudity, comedy, and a connection to each character.

QUOTE (Athomeboy_2000 @ Mar 20, 2011 -> 11:25 AM) I never include stuff like that. I do list what software and systems I have experience with, but I never differentiate which I am an "expert" at. Exactly what I do, it shows that you have some form of knowledge of the software/program but gives you leeway at the same time.

Matt Thornton named 2011 Closer
QUOTE (since56 @ Mar 20, 2011 -> 09:12 AM) Thornton's easy motion and very fast fastball have given him success. His pitch is straight though and good hitters have hit him ( all star game ). If he could develop another change of speed pitch he could be lethal. I'm sure the pro's have already known this and it is easier said than done. As of now I see him as the best choice. let's play ball! What do you call his numbers for the last 2+ years!?

The Finer Things In Life
Throughout the week I took advantage of the Belgium beer sale at the grocery store here and currently have this list: Tried: Westmalle Tripel Westmalle Dubbel These two have been some of my favorites, strong yet smooth. Jupiler The macro beer of Belgium, better than Bud but not a great choice and not the cheapest still. If you go this route you may as well buy the available generic store and Euro Shopper brands, which cost between .40-.50 euro per .5L can. Palm Another cheaper Belgian, it's a good choice for those who are looking for a mid-level beer but don't want store brand. Duvel One of my favorite beers overall, great taste and incredibly smooth. I will smack anyone who does a Duvel Challenge because that would be a waste of such a fine beer. Stella Artois - Not the best Belgian beer, but still a very good Pale Lager. At under .80 euro for .5L cans on sale, can never go wrong with this selection. To Try: La Chouffe Mc Chouffe Kasteel Dubbel Kasteel Tripel Maredsous Tripel I believe the lowest alc % is 8% for the beers I have yet to try, unfortunately I am waiting for my brother to arrive to try them with me so I'll be waiting impatiently. Luckily I have some extras to drink beforehand.

Job Hunt Thread
QUOTE (iamshack @ Mar 20, 2011 -> 08:26 AM) Does one really even need to put things like "fluent" in this, or "expert" in that? I feel like there is so much bulls*** in resumes these days that it's better to just concisely explain your qualifications/experience. I always try to think about a resume from the hiring manager's perspective. He wants to see you have the qualifications/skillset/experience he's looking for, and doesn't necessarily give a s*** how many "buzz" words you use. I go for clear, concise and clean rather than trying to blow them away with my fluency in Excel and 3 foreign languages. This approach usually lands an interview and then I try to make the real impression I'm trying to make at that time. I tend to agree, but it really depends on the style that the recruiter/manager likes. Some like the shiny Corvette style that is all show but isn't practical, others can see through it. For me personally, I know that I don't necessarily want to work for a company that can't see through the clear bulls***, so if they can't see through something that clear on a resume why would I really want to work for them anyways.

Job Hunt Thread
QUOTE (Whitewashed in '05 @ Mar 19, 2011 -> 12:55 PM) So I have started looking for a job as I'm graduating with a BS in the IT field in May. I've been following this thread for the last few pages now. There's some good info here, thanks guys. With that said I've got a few questions. I've heard it is important to tailor a cover letter specific to the company/position one is applying for. How much customizing are we talking here? "Insert Company Name Here" or rewrite a new cover letter per job? I've also heard the same for a resume, however seeing as how I'm a new graduate with a variety of experience in the IT field, how much customizing is needed for my resume? For your resume you may want to highlight more technical experience that you may have, or project experience, etc. If you are going for a consulting position you may want to include a section based on that, such as case competitions etc.

The Finer Things In Life
QUOTE (FlaSoxxJim @ Mar 19, 2011 -> 12:32 PM) So here's the beer lineup we presented at the cancer research Belgian Beer benefit event I co-hosted yesterday: • Palm Ale (a "gateway" beer for those new to Belgians) • Blanche de Bruxxelles witbier • Westmale Tripel — the original Trappist pale tripel • Chimay Red — we did Cinq Cents last time around and wanted something not as big as the Blue • Malheur 10º — An AWESOME beer I had never had before last night • Brooklyn Local 2 — wanted to showcase one American interpretation We complemented the beers wit cheese and meat plates and Lindman's framboise sorbet I made that went over very well. We knew we would challenge some tastebuds of some of the more pedestrian beer drinkers but I think we actually tickled a lot of tongues with such an array of offerings. What do y'all think? I have some Palm and Westmale Tripel in my fridge right now Palm is a decent beer, nothing too special but better than your standard beer. Westmale is pretty damn good and well respected. Im going to keep an eye out for some the other beers when I go back to Belgium in about 3 weeks.

Illinois enacts Internet sales tax law
QUOTE (Rex Kicka** @ Mar 18, 2011 -> 09:52 PM) If these affiliates aren't collecting taxes from sales made from Illinois residents in the first place, exactly how is this hurting Illinois again? Loss of jobs and businesses? Don't businesses pay other taxes besides sales tax??

Southwest Region
Shocked that the Illini stepped it up in this game, hopefully they can do it again vs. Kansas. Of course, they still battled with sloppiness in the last 5 minutes of the game.

Pitching Depth
I never said that the Sox wouldn't be able to dump contracts, I said they won't get much value in return, thus leaving the team pretty much void of a chance to compete with our current young players just not being enough.

Pitching Depth
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Mar 18, 2011 -> 04:19 PM) If this team flops at the start of this year, there will be a fire sale to move everything with a contract. They can't afford to carry a bad team this year. They were in the early stages of it last year (shopping players around) when the team caught fire last year. With something like 20 to 25 million more in total payroll, it will be much quicker. We won't wait around to let a long crappy season happen. Guys will be dealt, and the next generation will be acquired quickly. Problem is, they already looked into that scenario in the offseason and we're not pleased with the potential outcome of going that route. Now if that situation does become true you have an even older AJ and Paulie, and FAs to be in Beuhrle and EJax, and an expensive Peavy. The pieces that still would have a ton of value is Danks and Thorton, besides that almost every player with a large contract wouldn't bring in that much, and what is brought in probably wouldn't be enough together with what we currently have in terms of young players to build a winner. It would take a few years of draft/development/trades to get the team back to contention.

Pitching Depth
QUOTE (IamtheHBOMB @ Mar 18, 2011 -> 04:10 PM) Do you ever get sick of being this guy? Sad thing is he is completely right, if the fans don't support the team, especially because they falter and don't make the playoffs, they will have a huge amount of money tied up in few players next year, all after a disappointing season that most likely lost the owners money. After that the team would have to reevaluate their position, and unless JR wants to spend even more they may not be able to make any upgrades. This is because the system is so weak, and if Sale can't turn into a SP next year (which is a big IF, even if he wasn't going to be in the bullpen this year) than the Sox will have to trade pieces, MLB or Minor League, or sign expensive FAs. And although we have Morel and Viciedo ready to contribute, the system lacks players that will be ready to start next year, unless Flowers (who is my comeback player), Mitchell, etc show in big ways that they have overcome their flaws and are ready, which is pretty unlikely considering their setbacks and the overall % of failure of prospects.

Pitching Depth
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Mar 18, 2011 -> 01:59 PM) How many teams really have 6 or 7 major league ready pitchers for their starting rotation? There is a reason pitchers are in the minors. If they were good enough to be a solid starter at the major league level, they would be on a roster somewhere. It would be nice though to have a few at AA that are rising stars, if not contributing this year then ready to make the club next year. Unfortunately, we'll be forced into signing a FA or trading for SP's next offseason, and we all know the price in either route to be ridiculous.

2011 AL Central Catch-All Thread
QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Mar 15, 2011 -> 10:14 PM) Zumaya is constantly a ticking time bomb. The Tigers should be thankful for anything they get from him this year. I wouldn't be entirely surprised if he didn't throw a meaningful pitch. That whole story on him hurting his shoulder from a box falling on it while moving just reeked of cover up.

Job Hunt Thread
QUOTE (Iwritecode @ Mar 18, 2011 -> 11:54 AM) I’ve always had trouble doing this. I was with my previous employer for 11 years but when I sat down to write out my resume I really had to ask myself, what the hell did I actually *DO* in those 11 years? I’ve never been about to actually quantify my work into numbers besides the number of projects I worked on. I can’t say that any of them saved the company X number of dollars or allowed them to sell X amount of product. Typically the stuff I did was to make the job of somebody else slightly easier. Which can be a great selling point to recruiters too. I do see your point though, it can be harder to quantify how one improved the company, org, etc in some jobs that they are given.

2011 Music Thread
After watching "Friday" and "My Jeans" I have come up with this- recipe to making a viral music video: 1) be a young female, like creepy young 2) lyrics written by even younger person 3) "sing" slowly enough to make sure that every word is autotuned 4) have awkward friends guest star in the music video with you, to be "real" 5) place a rap segment 3/4 of the way through the video, to show you a dangerous side, but make sure the rapper is white enough to not scare away mothers
