Cronyism at its finest?
QUOTE (Soxfest @ Oct 21, 2013 -> 04:26 PM) It is not about the money this organization does this over and over for no reason other than making someone's Dad happy. Every organization does this.... As NSS said, as long as we don't give priority to these guys over actual prospects then who cares.

Where will the 2014 Payroll sit?
Don't forget the large increase in draft and international cap that the Sox have, that will take a good chunk of the extra TV money.

A week of groceries in pictures
QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Oct 21, 2013 -> 09:15 AM) A friend and I were debating the whole living wage argument this weekend and we basically got down to this issue. What exactly does the bolded mean? What is "everything?" What is "enough?" Individually, we all could easily live on 10k a year - no fancy house, no cell phone, few clothes, etc. You could do it, but obviously it would be a life without luxury (and no kids). 10k? Even I think that's crazy low if you don't have any help: Monthly amount (assuming 10k is after taxes): ~833 per month. Rent: 450 (hard to find in Chicago but possible) Food: 250 (let's say they really scrounge, thats like $8 a day) Right there you are at $700, and thats with the bare minimum. Now add in clothes, utilities (gas and electric), etc and youre creeping on $830 a month real fast. I honestly don't know how you can say we could live easily off of 10k a year.

QUOTE (Buehrle>Wood @ Oct 5, 2013 -> 04:37 PM) Well if today is any indication they have one more win at most Purdue should be another win, one of Indiana/Penn State game could go our way. I see 4 wins realistically, 5 wins if the defense shows some improvement fast, and 6 wins is pretty much out of reach.

beer/food pairings
QUOTE (G&T @ Oct 3, 2013 -> 10:31 PM) The usual rule is that hops pair with fats. So an IPA goes well with burgers, and red meat. White meat will pair with less hoppy beer. Duvel is tough match because it is delicate. I'd prefer it with fruit or some blue cheese. I think the best way the handle the pairing is to go with opposing flavors. I know people pretend to like imperial stouts with dessert, for example, but I'll take a citrusy IPA. I don't pair stouts often but I think they would work well with BBQ. However if you are having a thanksgiving type meal with a ton of different foods, I'll take a saison. Specifically Saison DuPont. Funk goes with funk though. Funky cheese and sour beer, a wonderful combination. Saison Dupont is a fantastic saison. I suggest checking out their other beers if you can find them, specifically Moinette. One of, if not my favorite beer.

OBAMA/TRUMPCARE MEGATHREAD
QUOTE (greg775 @ Sep 30, 2013 -> 02:42 AM) Seriously, do you need hard data to make my argument true? As an American and (very dissatisfied) Republican who voted for Obama I am VERY frustrated that he can't get anything done. The man simply is a bust. This Obamacare thing is a disaster with him getting so little support for it. The economy is so bad and companies have downsized so much, I can't see that EVER changing to where companies will significantly increase hiring or pay ever again. Why should they? The economy has been so miserable with unemployment so high and wages so low. I've heard even law firms that once were booming have cut back on things like internships, etc. And you know darn well if Obama could run again, he'd win again for many many reasons. The liberal media would again have a lovefest on Michelle and Barack and the kids and how he's so charming, compared to the Republican zombie candidate. All his lovable intangibles would AGAIN come out during his third election. And he'd still get all the minority vote (Afr. American, Hispanic) and he'd win going away. GOING AWAY. And he's a horrific president. That's why I say, WHAT A COUNTRY! I'm so frustrated. What BILL Clinton said today IMO is true; Republicans want Obama and the country to fail and that's very very sad, and they should be so ashamed of themselves, but there's always been partisanship. Unlike Clinton and Reagan and the Bushes to a certain extent, Obama COULD NOT do anything with the other side. Nothing and thus he's a failure. Whatever happened to lobbying, making deals, whatever TO GET THINGS DONE!? Not great, but the economy is improving. But I'm sure your street polls in Lawrence, KS will show differently. There are lots of companies hiring, and in very well paying sectors. But with anything, there is a supply and demand for these jobs. For example, tech unemployment exists around the 3.3% mark, that is REALLY low for today's numbers. Why? Because companies see growth through technology so they are comfortable investing in it.

OBAMA/TRUMPCARE MEGATHREAD
QUOTE (greg775 @ Sep 29, 2013 -> 01:51 AM) What a country. Obama's big health care plan is a disaster. Obama can't get any support for anything, including this plan. He's been a big fat zero with the economy a total disaster. Yet if he was eligible to run for president in three years again, he'd win big again. I just don't get it anymore. I love your hard data on all of your points, makes it seem much more sane and logical.

Official 2013-2014 College Hoops Thread
QUOTE (Soxbadger @ Sep 27, 2013 -> 01:51 PM) So doom and gloom because of 2 years? An Izzo led MSU has never finished under 500 in Big10 play. Until proven otherwise the 2 teams that are the top of the Big 10 are OSU and MSU. Recruiting stars are great to talk about when your a team that hasnt been very good in a while, but when you have been in the hunt for Big10 championships the last decade you respect Izzo and Matta. Which is why they are ranked, what 5th on that list? They have tons of respect and lots of talent from great classes a few years ago. That said, Izzo is losing on the recruiting field this year and lost last year. Suddenly the state of Michigan isn't his to pick from, Chicago is always tough to recruit, and OSU is getting a stronghold in Ohio for any of their top talent. The whole recruiting landscape is shifting in a big way with Illinois and UM taking huge strides lately along with IU and OSU recruiting like blue chippers.

QUOTE (He_Gawn @ Sep 27, 2013 -> 01:35 PM) I think Michigan State is going to fall from that pretty quick after this year. Their recruiting of late has been awful per their standards. Yea, last year was an excuse for them since they were going hard for Parker and came close to getting him. But this year they've missed big on their targets so far, and were lucky that Tum Tum kid opened up for them.

I personally believe it's going to be KU or Depaul. I assume Depaul would do anything to get Cliff there, and Lyle is burning a lot of bridges. KU may or may not offer Lyle, but they have Cliff's attention in a big way. Illinois probably comes in third only because of Groce and Cliff's family loving him compared to other coaches.

Gordon Beckham
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Sep 16, 2013 -> 03:49 PM) Release him? First of all it would be Non-Tender him, and not release him. Secondly, it ain't happening. Unless the Sox have Robinson Cano fall into their laps for a miracle contract, Gordon Beckham will be the 2014 opening day first baseman. Simien may well break camp with the Sox but it will be at 3B or SS. I love that you immediately pointed out another site/person's mistake while you post some pretty obvious ones as well.

QUOTE (Jake @ Sep 15, 2013 -> 07:27 PM) We can Crean somebody to make room for Lyle FWIW, Alexander RT'd somebody saying they thought Lyle and Alexander would go to Illinois. He RT's lots of stuff though I flat out don't believe a word Cliff says on twitter, he does a lot of the things he does for hype/attention (who can blame him, he's trying to get recognized for when he's getting drafted). And I'm pretty sure the Lyle to Illinois ship has sailed. I think Groce goes hard for Cliff but beyond that he's done for 2014 unless something really unexpected happens. I really wanted Lyle before because he is a special talent and I was willing to make the risk of his personality for his skillset/get up noticed in recruiting, but now that we have Black and Snider committed he's not nearly as needed position wise or news wise. If KU wants both of them, all the power to them.

QUOTE (Soxfest @ Sep 12, 2013 -> 09:42 PM) I say 60/40 on Cliff. Of us getting him? You are setting yourself up for a big time disappoint then. We probably stand well with Cliff, but that still puts the odds against us. Anyways, it's way to early to tell with him, he won't be committing anytime soon.

Who's making you laugh?
Yea Louie is one of the best if not the best stand ups out there, I would put him at #1 and not worry about it. I saw Chappelle at the Oddball Comedy tour a few weeks back, he was funny but wasn't even the best at the show (he just wasn't as into it as you would expect someone doing stand up would be). Hannibal Buress was the star of the show imo.
